Notes: Cetirizine, a H1-receptor antagonist, exerts besides its well-known anti-allergic potential an array of anti-inflammatory activities. In particular epithelial cells activated in the presence of cetirizine showed a reduced ICAM-1 cell surface expression and a diminished release of sICAM-1.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉ObjectiveWe wondered whether cetirizine might influence the release of interleukin-8 (IL-8) from human epithelial cells activated with agonists distinct from histamine.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉MethodsWe used the human lung epithelial cell line A549 for our in vitro studies. IL-8 release was determined by IL-8 enzyme immunoassay, the intracellular staining for IL-8 and NF-kB was analysed by FACS analysis and IL-8 mRNA steady state level was studied by Northern blot analysis. Confluent epithelial cell monolayer were pre-incubated with cetirizine (0.01 −1.0 μmol/L) for 30 min and afterwards activated with pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ) or different agonists (PMA, NaF, respiratory syncytial virus [RSV]) for 24 h.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsEpithelial cells stimulated with TNF-α IL-1β, PMA and RSV, respectively, showed a significantly increased release of IL-8. Pre-incubation with cetirizine diminished the IL-8 release from cells activated with TNF-α or PMA in a significant manner. The reduced IL-8 release coincided with a diminished percentage of cells expressing IL-8. Northern blot analysis revealed a reduced steady state level of IL-8 mRNA in cells pretreated with cetirizine and stimulated with TNF-α. Furthermore, a decreased amount of accessible DNA-binding sites of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) was determined by FACS analysis.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsThese results suggest that cetirizine reduced the release of IL-8 from A549 cells stimulated with PMA and TNF-α, respectively, by lowering IL-8 gene expression. Therefore, cetirizine might exert anti-inflammatory effects beyond its H1-receptor antagonistic activity in the course of inflammatory respiratory tract disorders such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Notes: Nail polish that has completely dried on the fingernails contains water-soluble components that attain the skin during extensive but transient contact. This was proven by water extraction of thin layers of nail polish that had been painted onto glass plates and allowed to dry for 3 days. Comparing the isolated fractions and compounds with known nail polish ingredients revealed that the water-soluble substances are para- and ortho-toluenesulfonamide. Dihuty1 phthalate and 3 constituents of toluenesulfonamide-formaldehyde resin (TS-F-R), which is the basic material of almost all nail polishes sold worldwide. 12 female patients with proven nail polish allergy were patch tested with 21 nail polish components, including those isolated. Only 2 fractions were positive. These contained a monomer and a dimer created during condensation of TS-F-R. Their structures were elucidated. The 3rd compound, a trimer, remained negative, except in 1 case.

Notes: Primin (2-methoxy-6-pentyl-1,4-benzoquinone)is a naturally-occurring strong sensitizer from Primula obconica (Primulaceae), To determine the effect of side-chain length on senstizing potency 15 analogues with linear side chains from to from C1, to C15 and 4 C6- analogues with branched side chains were prepared synthetically and devoted to experimental sensitization in guinea pigs The results showed an increase of the sensitizing capacity with increasing length of the alkyl side chain from C1 to C10, reaching a maximum at C11 and C12. On further elongation the senstizing potency decreased beyond C13 reaching values which finally were as low as those of the C1 and C3 derivatives. The results mirror finding which finally were as low as those of the C1 and C3 derivatives. The results mirror findings which formerly have been obtained with other non-quinonoid compounds like catechols, phenols hydroquinones and gallates. In the plant kingdom. Compound approximating an “ideal allergen” consisting of a quinonoid ring with a 10 or 11 carbon-remarkably strong sensitizer found in Wigandia caracasana (Hydrophyllaceae)

Notes: Abstract The Neotropical species Pachycondyla marginata conducts well-organized predatory raids on the termite species Neocapritermes opacus and frequently emigrates to new nest sites. During both activities the ants employ chemical trail communication. The trail pheromone orginates from the pygidial gland. Among the substances identified in the pygidial gland secretions, only citronellal was effective as a trail pheromone. Isopulegol elicited an increase in locomotory activity in the ants and may function as a synergist recruitment signal. The chemical signal is enhanced by a shaking display performed by the recruiting ant.

Notes: Summary In all the species of theCataglyphis bicolor group examined yet, i.e.C. bicolor, C. diehli, C. isis, C. nodus, andC. viaticus, 2-methyl-1-hexanol is the characteristic substance and almost the only substance found in the mandibular glands. Its chirality has been determined inC. bicolor and shown to be exclusively (S)-2-methyl-1-hexanol.

Notes: Abstract  To evaluate the prevalence of resistance among Helicobacter pylori in Germany, the minimum inhibitory concentrations of amoxicillin, tetracycline, clarithromycin, and metronidazole were determined by means of the E test, for 271 Helicobacter pylori isolates cultured from biopsies taken during routine endoscopies in 1996 and 1997. The prevalence of metronidazole resistance was 32.1%, with resistance found more frequently in women (38.5%) than in men (24.4%). Clarithromycin resistance was rare (3.3%). Eight of nine strains resistant to clarithromycin were also resistant to metronidazole. Resistance to either metronidazole or clarithromycin was significantly (P=0.022) higher in patients with duodenal ulcer. No strain was found to be resistant to amoxicillin or tetracyline.

Notes: Abstract: We present the first energy and angle resolved measurements of e+e−-pairs emitted from heavy nuclei (Z≥ 40) at rest by internal pair conversion (IPC) of transitions with energies of less than 2 MeV as well as recent theoretical results using the DWBA method, which takes full account of relativistic effects, magnetic substates and finite size of the nucleus. The 1.76 MeV E0 transition in 90Zr (90Sr source) and the 1.77 MeV M1 transition in 207Pb (207Bi source) have been investigated experimentally using the essentially improved setup at the double-ORANGE β-spectrometer of GSI. The measurements prove the capability of the setup to cleanly identify the IPC pairs in the presence of five orders of magnitude higher β− and γ background from the same source and to yield essentially background-free sum spectra despite the large background. Using the ability of the ORANGE setup to directly determine the opening angle of the e+e−–pairs (Θe+e−), the angular correlation of the emitted pairs was measured within the range covered experimentally (40°≤Θe+e−≤ 180°). In the 90Zr case the correlation could be deduced for a wide range of energy differences E Δ of the pairs (−530 keV ≤E Δ≤ 530 keV). The 90Zr results are in good agreement with recent theory. The angular correlation deduced for the M1 transition in 207Pb is in strong disagreement with theoretical predictions derived within the Born approximation and shows almost isotropic character. This is again in agreement with the new theoretical results.
