Notes: Nail polish that has completely dried on the fingernails contains water-soluble components that attain the skin during extensive but transient contact. This was proven by water extraction of thin layers of nail polish that had been painted onto glass plates and allowed to dry for 3 days. Comparing the isolated fractions and compounds with known nail polish ingredients revealed that the water-soluble substances are para- and ortho-toluenesulfonamide. Dihuty1 phthalate and 3 constituents of toluenesulfonamide-formaldehyde resin (TS-F-R), which is the basic material of almost all nail polishes sold worldwide. 12 female patients with proven nail polish allergy were patch tested with 21 nail polish components, including those isolated. Only 2 fractions were positive. These contained a monomer and a dimer created during condensation of TS-F-R. Their structures were elucidated. The 3rd compound, a trimer, remained negative, except in 1 case.

Notes: Primin (2-methoxy-6-pentyl-1,4-benzoquinone)is a naturally-occurring strong sensitizer from Primula obconica (Primulaceae), To determine the effect of side-chain length on senstizing potency 15 analogues with linear side chains from to from C1, to C15 and 4 C6- analogues with branched side chains were prepared synthetically and devoted to experimental sensitization in guinea pigs The results showed an increase of the sensitizing capacity with increasing length of the alkyl side chain from C1 to C10, reaching a maximum at C11 and C12. On further elongation the senstizing potency decreased beyond C13 reaching values which finally were as low as those of the C1 and C3 derivatives. The results mirror finding which finally were as low as those of the C1 and C3 derivatives. The results mirror findings which formerly have been obtained with other non-quinonoid compounds like catechols, phenols hydroquinones and gallates. In the plant kingdom. Compound approximating an “ideal allergen” consisting of a quinonoid ring with a 10 or 11 carbon-remarkably strong sensitizer found in Wigandia caracasana (Hydrophyllaceae)

Notes: Cetirizine, a H1-receptor antagonist, exerts besides its well-known anti-allergic potential an array of anti-inflammatory activities. In particular epithelial cells activated in the presence of cetirizine showed a reduced ICAM-1 cell surface expression and a diminished release of sICAM-1.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉ObjectiveWe wondered whether cetirizine might influence the release of interleukin-8 (IL-8) from human epithelial cells activated with agonists distinct from histamine.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉MethodsWe used the human lung epithelial cell line A549 for our in vitro studies. IL-8 release was determined by IL-8 enzyme immunoassay, the intracellular staining for IL-8 and NF-kB was analysed by FACS analysis and IL-8 mRNA steady state level was studied by Northern blot analysis. Confluent epithelial cell monolayer were pre-incubated with cetirizine (0.01 −1.0 μmol/L) for 30 min and afterwards activated with pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ) or different agonists (PMA, NaF, respiratory syncytial virus [RSV]) for 24 h.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsEpithelial cells stimulated with TNF-α IL-1β, PMA and RSV, respectively, showed a significantly increased release of IL-8. Pre-incubation with cetirizine diminished the IL-8 release from cells activated with TNF-α or PMA in a significant manner. The reduced IL-8 release coincided with a diminished percentage of cells expressing IL-8. Northern blot analysis revealed a reduced steady state level of IL-8 mRNA in cells pretreated with cetirizine and stimulated with TNF-α. Furthermore, a decreased amount of accessible DNA-binding sites of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) was determined by FACS analysis.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsThese results suggest that cetirizine reduced the release of IL-8 from A549 cells stimulated with PMA and TNF-α, respectively, by lowering IL-8 gene expression. Therefore, cetirizine might exert anti-inflammatory effects beyond its H1-receptor antagonistic activity in the course of inflammatory respiratory tract disorders such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Notes: Abstract. We present the results of a Doppler-shift correction to the measured e+e−–sum-energy spectra obtained from e+e−–coincidence measurements in 238U +206Pb and 238U +181Ta collisions at beam energies close to the Coulomb barrier, using an improved experimental setup at the double-Orange spectrometer of GSI. Internal-Pair-Conversion (IPC) e+e− pairs from discrete nuclear transitions of a moving emitter have been observed following Coulomb excitation of the 1.844 MeV (E1) transition in 206Pb and neutron transfer to the 1.770 MeV (M1) transition in 207Pb. In the collision system 238U +181Ta, IPC transitions were observed from the Ta-like as well as from the U-like nuclei. In all systems the Doppler-shift corrected e+e−–sum-energy spectra show weak lines at the energies expected from the corresponding γ–ray spectra with cross sections being consistent with the measured excitation cross sections of the γ lines and the theoretically predicted IPC coefficients. No other than IPC e+e−–sum-energy lines were found in the measured spectra. The transfer cross sections show a strong dependence on the distance of closest approach (Rmin), thus signaling also a strong dependence on the bombarding energy close to the Coulomb barrier.

Notes: Abstract The Neotropical species Pachycondyla marginata conducts well-organized predatory raids on the termite species Neocapritermes opacus and frequently emigrates to new nest sites. During both activities the ants employ chemical trail communication. The trail pheromone orginates from the pygidial gland. Among the substances identified in the pygidial gland secretions, only citronellal was effective as a trail pheromone. Isopulegol elicited an increase in locomotory activity in the ants and may function as a synergist recruitment signal. The chemical signal is enhanced by a shaking display performed by the recruiting ant.

Notes: Abstract (S)-;(+)-4-Methyl-3-heptanone is the principal component in the secretion from the mandibular glands of unmated and mated males and females ofAtta sexdens rubropilosa. In mated and unmated females, it is essentially the only component in the glandular secretion. In unmated males up to 50% of the secretion is a mixture of (3S, 4S)- and (3R, 4S)-4-methyl-3-heptanol. After mating, the amount of alcohol in the males decreases markedly.

Notes: Abstract We analyzed the effect of the PAF receptor antagonist (+)-cis-3,5-dimethyl-2-(3-pyridyl)thiazolidin-4-one hydrochloride (SM-12502) on human platelet aggregation as well as mediator release. After incubation of human platelet with different concentrations of SM-12502 the cells were subsequently stimulated with either the Ca ionophore A23187, with human thrombin, or with an activator of heterotrimeric G-proteins, sodium fluoride (NaF, in the presence of Al3+). Preincubation of platelets with the PAF receptor antagonist led to an inhibition of 12-lipoxygenase derived 12(S)-HETE and cyclooxygenase derived 12(S)-HHT. Pretreatment of platelets with the PAF receptor antagonist SM-12502 prior to activation with the Ca ionophore A23187 or PAF also inhibited platelet aggregation. Our data clearly indicate an inhibitory effect of the new PAF receptor antagonist SM-12502 on the formation of platelet derived inflammatory mediators of the lipoxygenase pathway as well as of the cyclooxygenase pathway, and furtherone, treatment with the PAF receptor antagonist diminished platelet aggregation after subsequent specific and unspecific activation.
