Notes: Experiments in the edge plasma of TEXT-U (the Texas Experimental Tokamak-Upgrade) [K. W. Gentle, Nucl. Technol. Fusion 1, 479 (1981)] have used a positively biased Langmuir probe in conjunction with two triple probes to examine the "wake" or disturbance in the plasma caused by the electron current collected by the driven probe. Spatial measurements of the disturbed volume have been made in the radial and poloidal directions at two points along the disturbed flux tube, at 12 meters and 28 meters away from the driven probe. Both non-time dependent and time-dependent experiments are used to determine the dispersion of the driven wave. A classical collisional two-fluid model of electron collection by a biased surface, which accounts for electric potential perturbations and the associated currents only, successfully predicts many of the qualitative features of the disturbance. The magnitudes of the collision rates, however, have to be increased beyond the best estimates in order to achieve quantitative agreement, indicating the possible involvement of anomalous cross-field current transport processes. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Shear viscosity [η≡α×(mass density)×(diffusivity)] and parallel flow velocity [M∞×(Te+Ti)/mi] of tokamak edge plasma were simultaneously measured in the Texas Experimental Tokamak-Upgrade (TEXT-U) tokamak by using a "Visco-Mach" probe with the iteration method (VMPI) [K-S. Chung, Nucl. Fusion 34, 1213 (1994)]. The VMPI was composed of two Mach probes measuring two ratios of ion saturation current densities, with the small Mach probe located within the free presheath generated by the large Mach probe (LMP). Radial variations of the normalized shear viscosity, α, and parallel Mach number, M∞, for typical discharges were deduced from two measured ratios of ion saturation current densities, and plasma density from ion saturation currents by LMP. Here α varied from 0.7 to 1.3 with an estimated error of ±40%, and M∞ from 0 to 0.2 for 0〈r−rl〈4.5 cm, where rl=27 cm is the limiter radius. Also, α and M∞ increased with the radial direction, while cross-field diffusivity (D⊥) was approximately constant. Here D⊥ is obtained as ∼3DB, where a typical Bohm diffusivity (DB) is ∼1 m2/s. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A fast bolometer was used for direct measurements of parallel electron energy flux in the edge of the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT-U) [K. W. Gentle, Nucl. Technol. Fusion 1, 479 (1981)]. The fluctuating component of the parallel electron energy flux, combined with a measurement of magnetic fluctuations, provides an upper limit to the perpendicular electron flux. This magnetically driven energy flux cannot account for the observed energy flux. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Biasing a Langmuir probe to collect electrons creates a magnetic perturbation by drawing current along a field line. This perturbation propagates along the magnetic field as a shear-Alfvén mode and marks the affected field lines with a potential perturbation at the probe sweep frequency. This technique has been used in TEXT-U edge plasmas to locate a connection between two sensor probes separated by either 12 or 28 m along a field line, and this connection has been verified using magnetic field line tracing codes. The driver probe creates a shadow which spreads in the poloidal direction with increasing distance parallel to the magnetic field due to both the change of safety factor with minor radius and collisional effects. Determination of the radial and poloidal structure of the perturbation down the magnetic field therefore provides a measurement of the safety factor q as a function of minor radius in the edge. In addition, the technique for locating field lines has been used to establish a purely parallel connection between two floating probes and therefore provides a measurement of parallel wave number k(parallel)≤0.1 m−1 and parallel correlation length l(parallel)≥12 m. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An analysis technique of charge exchange neutral spectra is proposed and tested to obtain ion temperatures of a tokamak plasma. The technique models the deviation of the ion distribution from Maxwellian because of ripple trapped particles and introduces a hot ion effective temperature as a fitting parameter. The analysis code has been used to analyze active charge exchange data from TEXT discharges in which a significant up-down asymmetry in the neutral spectra was noted. An analysis considering ripple trapped particles removed some of the asymmetry and indicated the need for another mechanism for distorting charge exchange spectra. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present initial results from a new q diagnostic for TEXT-Upgrade. This method is based on using a toroidal array of detectors to determine the plane in which beam-injected neutrals are emitted after two charge exchange collisions. The potential advantages are low cost, full plasma accessibility, and good time resolution. Our initial series of experiments of TEXT-U establish the feasibility of this technique. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A diagnostic neutral beam will be installed on Alcator C-Mod for measurement of ñi, nz, Tz, vθ, vcursive-phi, and j. The beam will be used primarily for the study of thermal transport, Er in H-mode discharges, and to provide critical profile and turbulence data for tests of theoretically based models of turbulence and transport. The beam selected for this work was used on Texas Experimental Tokamak and is rated at 50 kV and 6 A of extracted current in hydrogen. It can produce beams of deuterium or helium as well. It is currently being reconfigured for installation on C-Mod. Capabilities for the intended measurements are described using simulations based on measured C-Mod profiles. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have installed and operated a reciprocating Langmuir/Mach probe to simultaneously measure parallel and perpendicular plasma flow profiles along with density, temperature, floating potential profiles, and fluctuating parameters such as fluctuation driven particle flux and wave number on a single shot. Plasma facing components are made from boron nitride and the probe tips are 1-mm-diam carbon cylinders. The Mach probe, designed following the Gundestrup model, has 12 probes arranged in a circular array. Four Langmuir probes mounted at the front of the Mach probe array measure floating potential, ion saturation current, and temperature. The perpendicular flow velocity measurements reduced from the Mach probe array compare well with the phase velocity measured from the proud Langmuir probes and the Er×B poloidal rotation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A wavelet or time-scale approach to analyzing a single time series and two time series, in which the fluctuating quantities are statistically nonstationary, is presented. The time scale and scale "power spectra" are introduced and utilized to analyze transient potential fluctuations measured at the core of sawtoothing TEXT-U plasmas. The results show features that have not been previously observed using any Fourier techniques. In addition, the linear time-scale "coherence spectrum" is developed to quantify the degree of linear relationship between two nonstationary fluctuating quantities in the time-scale domain. Such a spectrum is also useful in tracking the time-varying phase difference. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the time-scale spectra. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The time-domain triple-probe method (TDTP) switches Langmuir probe states at high speeds to gather triple-probe information thereby avoiding errors which result when implementing the triple-probe method with spatially separated single state probes in an inhomogeneous plasma. Successful implementation of the TDTP method requires a switching frequency greater than the turbulence bandwidth so that aliased power does not degrade time interpolated estimates of triple-probe states. Additionally, transients between states, largely determined by the ratio of ion saturation current to probe capacitance, must be short enough to establish a probe–plasma equilibrium. These requirements have been met in the edge plasma and parts of the scrape-off layer on the Texas Experimental Tokamak Upgrade. Temperature fluctuations have been measured at two poloidally separated probes. Cross-phase and coherence spectra consistent with those of floating potential fluctuations and ion saturation current fluctuations are measured. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
