    Notes: In the skin of normal and atopic individuals, the expression of E-selecting (ELAM-l), L-selectin (LECAM-l), P-selection (CD62), CD31 (PECAM), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-l), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-l), and cutaneous lymphocyte antigen (CLA) were compared by immunostaining of skin biopsies which were taken from normal individuals (n= 17), the healthy-appearing skin of patients with atopic dermatitis (n = lo), and their acute (n = 5) and chronic (n = 6) skin lesions. In contrast to ELAM-1, the expression of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 was found to be significantly increased in non lesional atopic skin in comparison to the skin of normal individuals. Moreover, in contrast to normal skin of healthy individuals, nonlesional atopic skin showed a further increase of VCAM-1, ICAM-1, and ELAM-1 when cultured with medium alone. This suggests that certain adhesion molecules are constitutively upregulated in healthy-appearing skin of patients with atopic dermatitis. In addition, atopic skin appears to respond to nonspecific stimuli (such as culture with medium alone) with upregulation of VCAM-1, ICAM-1, and ELAM-1. It is suggested that the observed upregulation of adhesion molecules is mediated by the release of cytokines such as interleukin-4 from cells which reside in atopic skin. The question of whether the inherent up regulation of adhesion molecules in atopic skin contributes to the development of Th2 cells, which have been found to predominate in atopic inflammation, has to be further investigated.

    Notes: Abstract  Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is highly susceptible to the beet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii Schm.). Three resistance genes originating from the wild beets B. procumbens and B. webbiana have been transferred to sugar beet via species hybridization. We describe the genetic localization of the nematode resistance genes in four different sugar beet lines using segregating populations and RFLP markers from our current sugar beet linkage map. The mapping studies yielded a surprising result. Although the four parental lines carrying the wild beet translocations were not related to each other, the four genes mapped to the same locus in sugar beet independent of the original translocation event. Close linkage (0–4.6 cM) was found with marker loci at one end of linkage group IV. In two populations, RFLP loci showed segregation distortion due to gametic selection. For the first time, the non-randomness of the translocation process promoting gene transfer from the wild beet to the sugar beet is demonstrated. The data suggest that the resistance genes were incorporated into the sugar beet chromosomes by non-allelic homologous recombination. The finding that the different resistance genes are allelic will have major implications on future attempts to breed sugar beet combining the different resistance genes.

    Notes: Abstract A new, well-documented case ofMycobacterium shimoidei infection is reported. This bacterium was isolated from a patient with preexisting pulmonary lesions who developed a tuberculosis-like cavity in the lung. Isolation of fewer than ten strains, not epidemiologically related, has been reported worldwide; all originated from human pulmonary samples. Identification of the strain described here was first accomplished by 16S rDNA direct sequencing after in vitro amplification. This method allows rapid identification of unusual bacteria. The identification was confirmed by specific phenotypical tests and by chromatographic methods.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports our experience with the use of an improved self-administered questionnaire for assessing quality of life (QOL) after acute myocardial infarction. The modified questionnaire significantly increased the proportion of patients able to answer all questions from 84%–92%. The additional questions in the improved questionnaire increased the total variance explained by the Emotional, Physical and Social QOL factors from 65.8%–66.5%. Internal consistency and construct validity were assessed and found to be high. Overall, we have found that this improved questionnaire is easy to administer and that it possesses desirable properties of validity and reliability.
