Notes: Abstract We report a solitary intraperitoneal recurrence in a long-term survivor after rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma. Ultrasonography demonstrated the finding of a lobulated mass with a “mosaic” appearance. The patient underwent resection of this implant and is currently disease free. We emphasize the importance of periodic surveillance of disseminated metastases of this condition.

Notes: The pure rotational spectra of MgNC in the ν2 (bending) vibrationally excited states were observed in the 310–380 GHz region to study the linearity of the molecule. The observed 90 spectral lines were assigned to the transitions in the v2=1–5 states and analyzed to determine a set of molecular constants in each state. The bending vibrational frequency was estimated to be 86 cm−1 from the l-type doubling constant of the v2=1 state. The interval of the Φ and Π states in v2=3 was determined to be 29.2280(24) cm−1, giving the anharmonicity constant xll=3.8611(9) cm−1 with one standard deviation in parentheses, which indicates that the molecule has a linear form. However, somewhat peculiar properties were recognized in dependence of the observed l-type resonance and vibration-rotation constants on the v2 vibrational quantum number, suggesting an effect of anharmonicity. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Mössbauer spectra of 57Fe-doped polycrystalline CuO/Al2O3 multilayers (CAOs) show magnetic ordering at liquid helium temperature. The Néel temperature of a CAO with thin CuO layers is lower than that of bulk CuO judged from the temperature dependence of the Mössbauer spectra. A paramagnetic component was observed in all magnetic susceptibility measurements of the multilayers. The component also exists in both polycrystalline and epitaxial CuO/MgO multilayers. We have found that the component was localized at interfaces and derived from the spin fluctuation effect. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An apparatus for variable-angle ultraviolet total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) spectroscopy is described. TIRF spectroscopy is an analytical technique based on the excitation of fluorescence from a sample by means of an exponentially decaying surface energy wave. The limited penetration depth of the excitation volume results in excitation of fluorescence only near the sample/substrate interface. The angular spectrum makes TIRF spectroscopy suitable for obtaining quantitative information on the depth profile of a sample. In the instrument described here, precise positioning of incident optics with correction of the chromatic aberration due to the xenon light source enables the measurement of the excitation spectrum. The system provides the fluorescence and excitation spectra for study of the physical and chemical properties of thin-film structures. The incident- and observation-angle dependences of those spectra give important information on the depth profiles of the fluorophores in the samples. The performance of the instrument is demonstrated with thin polymer films containing a fluorescent probe of pyrene. Pyrene monomer is found to form the nonuniform depth profile different from that of pyrene excimer. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ferromagnetic EuO multilayered films (MLs) were fabricated with nonmagnetic oxides such as MgO, ZrO2, and Y2O3. The EuO MLs showed increased Curie temperature (Tc) and metal insulator transition temperature (Tmi) than the bulk values due to oxygen deficiency. However, 151Eu Mössbauer spectra did not exhibit such an anomaly in Tc. It suggests a field induced magnetic component in the MLs. Significant increase of coercive force (Hc) with decreasing EuO layer thickness was observed only in EuO/MgO MLs. It was suggested that this increase was originated from a kind of interface effect. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
