Notes: Abstract We report a solitary intraperitoneal recurrence in a long-term survivor after rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma. Ultrasonography demonstrated the finding of a lobulated mass with a “mosaic” appearance. The patient underwent resection of this implant and is currently disease free. We emphasize the importance of periodic surveillance of disseminated metastases of this condition.

Notes: Abstract  We examined a nigro-tecto-bulbar pathway to the parvicellular reticular formation (RFp), where many premotor neurons for orofacial motor nuclei are known to be distributed, by using a combined anterograde and retrograde tracing method. After contralateral injections of biotinylated dextranamine (BDA) into the dorsolateral part of the substantia nigra (SNr) and cholera toxin B subunit (CTb) into the RFp, overlapping distributions of BDA-labeled terminals and CTb-labeled neuronal cell bodies were found in the lateralmost part of the superior colliculus (SC) ipsilateral or contralateral to the site of BDA injection or CTb injection, respectively. After contralateral injections of BDA into the SNr and horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA-HRP) injection into the RFp, ipsilateral labeled axon terminals with BDA were found to make symmetrical synaptic contacts with the somata and dendrites of contralateral labeled neurons with WGA-HRP in the lateralmost part of the SC. Furthermore, we demonstrated that BDA-labeled axon terminals were immunoreactive for GABA, by using the anterograde tracing method combined with immunohistochemistry for GABA. Thus, GABA-like immunoreactive fibers originating from the dorsolateral part of the SNr make monosynaptic contacts with the tectal neurons sending their axons to the RFp.

Notes: Summary Projections from the posterior thalamic regions to the striatum were studied in the cat by the anterograde tracing method after injecting wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate (WGA-HRP) into the caudalmost regions of the lateroposterior thalamic nucleus (caudal LP), suprageniculate nucleus (Sg) and magnocellular division of the medial geniculate nucleus (MGm). The results were further confirmed by the retrograde tracing method after injecting WGA-HRP into the regions of the caudate nucleus (Cd) and putamen (Put) where afferent fibers from the caudal LP, Sg and MGm were distributed. Fibers from the MGm, Sg or caudal LP were distributed mainly in the medial, middle or lateral part of the caudal half of the putamen (caudal Put), respectively. Although there was a considerable overlap, thalamostriatal fibers from the caudal LP terminated more caudally than those from the MGm. On the other hand, thalamocaudate fibers from the MGm, Sg and lateral part of the caudal LP overlapped with each other in the ventrolateral part of the caudal half of the caudate nucleus (caudal Cd). Fibers from the medial part of the caudal LP were distributed in the ventral part of the caudal Cd. In the superior colliculus (SC) of the cats with WGA-HRP injections in the caudal LP, retrogradely labeled neuronal cell bodies were mainly seen ipsilaterally in the superficial SC layer, and simultaneously, anterogradely labeled axon terminals were observed in the striatum. On the other hand, when WGA-HRP was injected into the Sg or MGm, labeled SC neurons were mainly located in the intermediate and deep SC layers. Thus, ascending impulses from the superficial SC layer may possibly be conveyed ipsilaterally via the caudal LP to the ventral and ventrolateral parts of the caudal Cd and the lateral part of the caudal Put, whereas those from the intermediate and deep SC layers may be relayed via the Sg and/or MGm to the ventrolateral part of the caudal Cd and the middle and medial parts of the caudal Put.

Notes: Summary Direct projections from Ammon's horn to the septum were studied in the cat by the anterograde tracing method after injecting WGA-HRP (wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate) into Ammon's horn. The results were further confirmed by the retrograde WGA-HRP method after injecting WGA-HRP into the septum. Pyramidal neurons in fields CA1, CA2 and CA3 were observed to send their axons ipsilaterally to the lateral septal nucleus; the septal parts of the hippocampus sent projection fibers to the dorsomedial portions of the lateral septal nucleus via the medial aspects of the subcallosal fornix, while the hippocampal regions successively more proximal to the temporal pole sent projection fibers to progressively more ventrolateral portions of the lateral septal nucleus via more lateral aspects of the subcallosal fornix. It was also found that the septal parts of fields CA1, CA2 and CA3 sent projection fibers bilaterally to the dorsomedial aspects of the lateral septal nucleus. Field CA4 appeared to send projection fibers only sparsely, if at all, to the medial septal nucleus. The rudimentary parts of the hippocampal formation, taenia tecta and indusium griseum, were found to have reciprocal ipsilateral connections with the dorsal portions of the lateral septal nucleus.

Notes: We have developed a new electron–ion coincidence apparatus combined with synchrotron radiation in order to examine the various ion desorption mechanisms related to the Auger process induced by core excitation. Photon stimulated ion desorption (PSID) of a poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) thin film has been investigated by this apparatus. The PSID of PMMA induced by carbon core excitation has been examined using Auger electron yield, total ion yield, resonant Auger electron, and Auger electron–photoion coincidence (AEPICO) spectra. The spectrum of the total ion yield divided by the Auger electron yield shows that the desorption efficiency is largely increased at the resonant excitation of carbon 1s electron in the O–CH3 side chain to σ*(O–CH3) orbital. In AEPICO measurement, H+ and CHn+ (n=1–3) ions are observed at various resonant excitations. The AEPICO signal intensity depends on the Auger electron energy. Particularly, the CH3+ ion desorption in coincidence with Auger electron at 270 eV shows strong enhancement with σ*(O–CH3) resonant excitation. The results of the resonant Auger spectra and AEPICO yield spectra demonstrate the relation of the ion desorption mechanism to the bonding/antibonding character and localized character of the excited σ*(O–CH3) orbital and the Auger final state. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
