    Notes: Emission spectra obtained from jet-cooled disulfur monoxide (S2O) molecules have been interpreted by means of a novel Lie algebraic formalism that makes possible the facile evaluation of multidimensional Franck–Condon factors. Fluorescence accompanying selective excitation of isolated vibronic bands in the S2O C˜ 1A′←X˜ 1A′(π*←π) absorption system has been dispersed under moderate spectral resolution, allowing assignment of ground state levels possessing up to 20 quanta of vibration in the ν2 S–S stretching mode [Evib(X˜)≤13 900 cm−1]. Aside from providing a rigorous and economical description for the inherently anharmonic nature of highly-excited polyatomic species, our algebraic approach enables quantitative information on molecular wavefunctions to be extracted directly from spectroscopic data. The emerging picture of S2O vibrational dynamics suggests that the X˜ 1A′ potential surface is substantially more "local" in character than the C˜ 1A′ manifold. While the observed pattern of X˜ 1A′ vibrational energies could be reproduced well through use of model Hamiltonians that include only diagonal anharmonicities in the local algebraic basis, successful treatment of the C˜ 1A′ state necessitated explicit incorporation of off-diagonal anharmonicities that lead to pervasive mixing of local vibrational character. This disparate behavior is manifest strongly in measured C˜–X˜ transition strengths, thereby allowing detailed investigations of Franck–Condon intensities to discern the underlying dynamics. Structural parameters deduced from algebraic analyses are in good accord with previous predictions of the change in S2O geometry accompanying π*←π excitation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In the title compound, bis(ω-nitroacetophenonato-O,O')bis(pyridine)manganese(II), [Mn(C8H6NO3)2(C5H5N)2], the ω-nitroacetophenone (ω-nap) ligands chelate the manganese center, forming a six-membered ring with a bite angle of 80.13 (11)°. The distance from the metal to the nitro-O atom is longer than that from the metal to the carbonyl O atom, indicating that the latter is more strongly bound and suggesting a keto-to-enol mechanism preceding the binding of ω-nap to the metal.

    Notes: Elastic scattering factors (or atomic form factors) f (s) for Li to Ar have been derived in the first Born approximation from ab initio MR-SDCI (multireference singly and doubly excited configuration interaction) calculations which recover between 90 and 99% of the estimated total correlation energy. The correlation effects on f (s) are contrasted with the relativistic effects known from the literature. Atomic form factors are presented that take into account correlation and relativistic contributions in an additive manner.

    Notes: Summary. Recently a mutation in the parkin gene has been identified as the cause for an autosomal-recessively inherited form of early onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD). The disease causing minimal deletion has been defined as a homozygous exon 4 loss in the parkin gene among Japanese patients. We investigated 140 sporadic and familial EOPD patients of German ancestry for the exon 4 deletion in the parkin gene. None of our patients exhibited a homo-zygous deletion of exon 4, suggesting a minor role of this mutation for EOPD in Caucasians. Nevertheless a detailed mutation analysis is warranted to explore the overall significance of mutations in the parkin gene in EOPD.

    Notes: Abstract Objective Metabolic effects of different caloric regimens were investigated in nonsurgical, medical patients with multipleorgan failure (MOF). Design Seven total parenteral nutrition (TPN) regimens were administered, differing in amount (14, 28, and 56 kcal/kg per day, i.e., hypo-, iso-, and hypercaloric nutrition, respectively) and distribution [carbohydrates (COH), amino acids (AA), long-chain and mediumchain triglycerides (LCT/MCT)] of calories. Each regimen was administered over 12 h. Metabolism was monitored by energy expenditure (EE), body temperature (BT), protein breakdown (PB), and blood glucose and serum lactate levels. Measurements were started within 2 days of MOF onset. Setting The study was conducted in a medical intensive care unit.Patients: Twenty patients with MOF on mechanical ventilation (mean Apache II score $$\bar x$$ =26) were investigated. Measurements and results The mean values of the EE ( $$\bar x$$ =31 kcal/kg per day), BT ( $$\bar x$$ -38°C), PB ( $$\bar x$$ =1.5 g/kg per day), and lactate ( $$\bar x$$ =2.0 mmol/l) and glucose level ( $$\bar x$$ =222 mg/dl) parameters were elevated. EE, BT, and lactate and glucose levels were significantly lower under hypocaloric nutrition than during iso- and hypercaloric nutrition (p〈0.01). Differences in the metabilic effects of LCT and MCT were not significant. PB was significantly elevated under hypercaloric nutrition (p〈0.01). Protein balance was positive under hypercaloric nutrition, and negative under iso- and hypocaloric nutrition. Conclusions In nonsurgical, medical patients neither hypercaloric nor isocaloric nutritional support prevented protein catabolism; in contrast, they enhanced the metabolic burden measured by EE, thermogenesis, urea production rate, and glucose and lactate levels. A hypocaloric regimen is therefore recommended for these patients during the early phase of MOF.

    Notes: Abstract. An electric cage-laser micro-turning lathe was realised and applied to contact-free handling and mechanical processing of micro particles. Since particles with diameters of several micrometers cannot be fixed in mechanical chucks, an octode field cage was used to trap and rotate a single particle in a fluid without any mechanical surface contact. A pulsed nitrogen laser of high beam quality focused to about 1 μm in diameter could be adjusted independently of the cage position. The trapping forces (negative dielectrophoresis) acting on a bead of 5 to 15 μm are up to several hundred pN. This and the surrounding fluid damp down the effect of the laser pulses during bead processing. Examples demonstrating the possibilities of this technique are shown. Microsystems with high optical quality were fabricated photolithographically or by laser direct-write chemical vapor deposition (LCVD). Technical and biotechnological applications are discussed.
