Notes: Abstract We examined 64 normal Japanese chromosomes to determine the heterozygosities and allelic frequencies of 358 dinucleotide-repeat marker loci spanning the whole human genome. Comparisons of the data for each marker in the Japanese population sample with data for the same markers among Caucasian samples in the Genome Database (GDB) revealed a slightly lower average of heterozygosity in Japanese (71% vs 79%). Although the majority of the markers were as informative as in Caucasians, some in our sample were uninformative due to low heterozygosity; 38 loci revealed heterozygosities lower than 50% and 11 of these were less than 30%. Furthermore, allelic distributions at many of the marker loci were quite different in the two racial groups. Since such differences will influence statistical analyses between markers and disease loci, our data will be essential for linkage analyses, sib-ship pair analyses, and association studies involving the Japanese population. Therefore we have archived this database on a home page on the Internet (http://www.ims.u-tokyo.ac.jp/nakamura/Yamane.html).

Notes: Abstract The distribution and abundance of Japanese common squid [Todarodes pacificus (Steenstrup, 1880)] paralarvae off southern Kyushu Island near the Kuroshio were examined in relation to water types in the region. Surveys were conducted in 1996 and 1997 using paired, 70 cm diameter Bongo nets. Temperature–salinity plots from 0, 50 and 100 m depths were used to assign sampling stations to three water types: inshore, mixing and Kuroshio. In total, 4103 T. pacificus paralarvae were collected at 59 of 72 stations. Catch densities at positive stations ranged between 8 and 4282 ind./50 m2 sea surface area. Catches during both years were highest in mixing waters, followed by inshore and Kuroshio waters. Total catches were highest just north of the oceanographic front at the inshore edge of the Kuroshio and declined with increasing distance away from the front. Catches of paralarvae ≤1.0 mm mantle length also peaked near the front. In both years, ≥85% of all paralarvae and ≥69% of those ≤1.0 mm mantle length occurred less than 25 km from the front. We conclude that most spawning off southwest Kyushu occurs near the frontal zone, where Kuroshio and inshore waters meet.

Notes: Abstract Among the 35,210 patients with Kawasaki disease who were reported in nationwide surveys from 1991 to 1996, 83% were treated with gamma-globulin (GG). Those treated with a total dose of 1000 mg/kg (9098 patients) and 2000 mg/kg (7012 patients) were selected as the subjects of the study on the relationship between the development of cardiac sequelae, in particular of giant aneurysms, and related factors using logistic regression models. Among the two groups that received 1000 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg, respectively, the odds ratios for cardiac sequelae were significantly high for males, those 〈6 months and ≧ 7 years of age, and typical or recurrent cases. Except for those 〈6 months of age, the odds ratios of all the factors mentioned above were higher for the incidence of giant coronary aneurysms than those for cardiac sequelae. The preventive effects of GG therapy for cardiac sequelae and in particular giant aneurysms, were significantly low when GG administration was initiated on day 8 or later after onset. In the group treated with 1000 mg/kg, the preventive effect was low when GG administration was spread over 3 days or longer. Conclusion To prevent the development of cardiac sequelae, in particular giant coronary aneurysms, gamma-globulin therapy should be started as soon as possible and be completed within 2 days.

Notes: Abstract In spite of many reports of recurrent Kawasaki disease, little information about the risk factors associated with recurrence is available. We conducted a case-control study on 150 cases of recurrent Kawasaki disease and 1173 pair-matched controls selected from the database of nationwide surveys of the same disease in Japan. Items observed were: sex, age, use of intravenous gamma globulin, and cardiac sequelae at the first episode. Sex and cardiac sequelae did not affect the risk of recurrence. One- to 2-year-old children were more likely to be affected again than infants (odds ratio [OR] = 1.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.94– 2.13), and children who were 3 years of age or older were less likely to experience a recurrence than infants (OR = 0.59; 95% CI, 0.34–1.02). Intravenous gamma globulin therapy at the first episode increased the risk for recurrence of Kawasaki disease within 12 months (OR = 2.66, 95% CI, 1.06–6.66). However, it did not affect recurrences 12 months after the first episode (OR = 1.02; 95% CI, 0.53–1.97). Conclusion Patients with Kawasaki disease treated with intravenous gamma globulin are 2.66 times as likely to be affected by the disease again within 12 months as those treated without intravenous gamma globulin.

Notes: Summary A thermodynamic calculation of the Fe−Cr−Ni phase diagram suggests that the composition 30 at.%Cr-5 at.%Ni is expected to be found inside the spinodal line, whereas 16 at.%Cr-5 at.%Ni is expected outside at 723 K. These two alloys have been thermally aged for time periods up to 40 minutes at 723K. A significant broadening of the magnetic-hyperfine-field distribution indicates that Fe-30 at.%Cr-5 at.%Ni undergoes typical spinodal decomposition in agreement with the calculation. Spinodal decomposition is distinguished from nucleation-growth by a detailed analysis of the magnetic-hyperfine-field distribution.

Notes: A novel dusty plasma device to create spatially and temporally uniform steady state dusty plasma is described. An ultrasonic vibrator is used to vibrate a dust dispenser which disperses the dust uniformly through a fine mesh. A dusty plasma of large dimension with controllable dust density is produced. Measured dusty plasma parameters are compared with existing theories. Some experimental results related to propagation characteristics of dust-ion-acoustic waves in a dusty plasma column are presented. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The open-tube diffusion of zinc in GaAs0.8P0.2 from a zinc-doped silica film was investigated in detail. Aluminum nitride (AlN) and silicon nitride (SiNx) films were used as the anneal caps. The dependence of diffusion depth on the thickness of an AlN-cap was found to differ from its dependence on SiNx-cap thickness. The selective masked diffusion of zinc using an AlN diffusion-mask was also systematically studied. The diffusion depth in selective masked diffusion was found to depend on both AlN-cap thickness and AlN-diffusion-mask thickness. The experimental results suggest that diffusion depth is not necessarily governed by either cap thickness or diffusion-mask thickness. From this standpoint, the role of film stress on diffusion depth was then quantitatively investigated. It was found that diffusion depth can be scaled well with total film stress in the measured film-thickness range. In this sense, it can be concluded that total film stress is the primary factor that determines the diffusion depth under the measured diffusion conditions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To determine the involvement of proteinases with hydrolytic activity towards extracellular matrix and basement membrane, in invasion and metastasis of tumour cells, the expression of cathepsin D, an aspartic proteinase, and cathepsin B, a cysteine proteinase, was studied. Formalin-fixed paraffinembedded specimens from 13 patients who had squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) with local recurrence, skin and/or lymph node metastasis were examined. Cathepsin D stained intensely as a granular pattern (mature enzyme) in tumour cells of 69% of primary lesions and all the secondary lesions of the patients with SCC. Cathepsin B stained more intensely in SCC cells of all of the primary and secondary lesions than in normal epidermis: staining patterns were almost diffuse (procathepsin B). Granular and diffuse patterns (mature enzyme of cathepsin D and procathepsin B, respectively) appeared in the outer and inner parts of tumour islands, respectively. The presence of the active mature form of cathepsin D and procathepsin B in metastatic skin lesions of SCC was confirmed by Western blotting analysis. The presence and localization of the active mature form of cathepsin D suggests that activated cathepsin D may be involved in the invasion and metastasis of SCC.
