Notes: Abstract An experimental model of blockage of the mesenteric lymphatic flow (MLF) in rats was designed, and morphologic changes of mesenteric lymphatic vessels (MLV) and lymph nodes were investigated by mesenteric lymphangiography and histopathologic examination. Body weight in rats with blockage of MLF did not increase normally. Mesenteric lymphangiography revealed dilation of the MLV, reverse flow into the peripheral MLV, and leakage of contrast medium, resulting in chylous ascites. Remarkable dilation of the lymphatic sinuses and dilated and increased rough endoplasmic reticulum in lymphocytes in the mesenteric lymph nodes due to lymph stagnation were observed by light and electron microscopic examination, respectively.

Notes: Two atropisomers, ap and sc*(9S*), of the title compound [8-chloro-1,4-dimethyl-9-(2-methylbenzyl)-9,10-dihydro-9,10-o-benzenoanthracene, C30H25Cl] have been isolated and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction. The structures of the two isomers are essentially the same as those of the analogous bromo derivatives. The crystal of the sc*(9S*) isomer decomposed when it was heated to 493 K, owing to the sc–ap transition.

Notes: Summary.  We describe methods for the preparation of collagen and gelatin samples to detect possible prion contaminants using Western blotting of a major component of prions, PrPSc. A commercially available collagen solution containing 2% athero-collagen was spiked with rodent adapted scrapie prion and used as the prion-contaminating collagen. The methods developed center on the enzymatic reduction of the collagen solution viscosity with protease treatments and on the concentration of the prion from the protease-digests with polyethylene glycol-#6000 and NaCl. Recovery of the spiked prion as a partially protease-resistant core fragment of PrPSc fluctuated from 30% to 46% of the input amount.
