Notes: A case of solitary malignant schwannoma, appearing as a painless mass near the right ankle of a 46-year-old female, is presented. Solitary malignant schwannoma without neurofibromatosis is considered to be quite rare. However, this disorder has a better prognosis than neurofibromatosis. Previous reports indicate that the treatment usually chosen is wide local excision without lymph node dissection. unless clinically involved nodes are present.

Notes: A case of uterine carcinosarcoma with extensive neuroectodermal differentiation occurring in a 54-year-old woman is described. Microscopically, the endometrial tumour was predominantly composed of a sheet-like proliferation of small- and medium-sized cells. These cells were characterized by fibrillary cytoplasmic processes, rosette-like formations, perivascular palisading patterns, and immunoreactivity for glial fibrillary acidic protein, synaptophysin, leu 7 and neuron-specific enolase. In limited areas, features of conventional carcinosarcoma, including squamous cell carcinoma, leiomyosarcoma and islands of the above mentioned small-to medium-sized cells that were intermingled, were observed. The tumour was aneuploid by flow cytometry. The patient is alive with tumour for three months. It is suggested that at least some cases of uterine primitive neuroectodermal tumour may be explained by one-sided neuroectodermal development within a carcinosarcoma.

Notes: Abstract: Citrulline residues are detected in keratins and filaggrin in the cornified layers of mammalian epidermis. Such citrulline residues are formed by the enzymatic deimination of arginine residues by peptidylarginine deiminase (EC 3.5.3.15). Major deiminated keratins are thought to be partially degraded/disulfide-cross-linked keratin K1 based on the immunoblotting profiles. In order to obtain more definitive evidence of the deimination of keratin K1 and also to investigate its functional significance, we attempted to identify its preferred acting sites of peptidylarginine deiminase. A partially degraded keratin K1 fraction obtained from the cornified layer of newborn mouse epideermis was subjected to limited proteolytic cleavages, and the resulting deiminated peptides were fractionated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis or reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography for N-terminal sequencing and/or amino acid analysis. At least two sites were identified, one in the V1 and the other in the V2 subdomains of keratin K1. An undecapeptide sequence covering the latter shows about 70% homology with an undecapeptide sequence in the V2 subdomain of human K1, a presumptive site of deimination. We speculated that the deimination of arginine residues in these subdomains might modulate their interactions with epidermal proteins other than keratins and filaggrin during the terminal stage of epidermal differentiation.

Notes: The incidence of ovarian atypical endometriosis and its association with malignant epithelial tumours in a consecutive series of cases during the period 1987 to 1995 were studied. Atypical glandular changes were observed in four (1.7%) of 255 ovarian endometriosis cases and one patient with ovarian atypical endometriosis developed subsequent endometrioid carcinoma in the abdominal wall. Fifty-four (24.1%) of the 224 ovarian cancers were associated with ovarian endometriosis; 21 with typical and 33 with atypical endometriosis. Clear cell carcinomas and endometrioid carcinomas were most frequently associated with endometriosis, with 54% (27 of 50 cases) and 41.9% (13 of 31), respectively. Atypical endometriosis was found in 18 clear cell carcinomas, in seven endometrioid carcinomas, in four serous carcinomas, in three mucinous borderline tumours, and in one serous borderline tumour. In 13 cases, the atypical endometriosis was in contiguity with malignant epithelial tumours. We consider that atypical endometriosis possesses a precancerous potential or is most frequently associated with clear cell and endometrioid carcinomas. Close screening of cellular atypia or hyperplasia in ovarian endometriosis and careful long-term follow-up of patients with atypical endometriosis is required.

Notes: Abstract A remarkable increase of both catalytic activity and the selectivity of dimers has been found for propylene dimerization affording 2,3-dimethylbutenes by a nickel-phosphine catalyst system composed of nickel naphthenate/P(cyclo-C6H11)3/A lEt3/ (CF3)2CHOH in the presence of CF3SO3H and/or Me2SO4: a combination of these effective additives also enhanced the reaction rates.

Notes: Abstract A spin model is one of the statistical mechanical models which were introduced by V.F.R. Jones to construct invariants of links. In this paper, we give a new construction of spin models of size 4n from a given spin model of size n. The process is similar to taking tensor product with a spin model of size four, but we add some sign exchange. This construction also gives symmetric four-weight spin models of the type introduced by E. Bannai and E. Bannai.

Notes: Abstract Two cases of choriocarcinoma in situ arising in a first trimester placenta are reported in a 28-year-old gravida 2, para 1, Japanese woman and a 38-year-old gravida 2, para 0. Both had a dilation and curettage (D and C) for vaginal bleeding and the absence of intrauterine fetus. No macroscopic abnormalities were noted in either case. However, histologically, localized nodules of neoplastic trophoblastic proliferation measuring 5 mm in the first case, and 6 mm in the second appeared to arise directly from normal stem villi and project into the intervillous space. Both tumours were composed of biphasic cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast. Fetal elements were not observed in either case. Radiographic studies showed no metastatic lesions in either patient. Urinary human chorionic gonadotropin levels were within normal range in both patients. The first patient had a normal full-term spontaneous vaginal delivery 22 months after the D and C and was free from disease without therapy at 32 months. The second patient was free from disease without therapy with a limited follow-up. These tumours provide evidence for an origin of choriocarcinoma from trophoblast of a stem villus. This report illustrates the need to perform thorough microscopic examination of the products of conception especially in the absence of a fetus or fetal parts.
