    Notes: Abstract. A system for parallel synthesis of atomically regulated lattices and nano-structured heterojunctions has been developed. This combinatorial laser MBE system is composed of a UHV-PLD chamber, scanning RHEED for in situ diagnostics of reactions at various areas of substrate surface, a pair of fixed and moving masks to define the film deposition area, and a computer for controlling the operation conditions as functions of deposition area and time. In this system, oxide layered lattice strips were deposited in parallel on a SrTiO3 substrate under RHEED observation of individual strips with different compositions and/or layer thickness.

    Notes: Summary Octreotide is a potent agonist of somatostatin that lowers the serum level of growth hormone (GH), and reduces the size of somatotropinomas. However, the detailed mechanism of shrinkage of this tumour is not known. We, therefore, evaluated 11 patients with somatotropinomas who were treated with octreotide 300 μg/day for 2–5 weeks to observe the morphological changes in the tumour using electron microscopy and the immunocytochemical study of apoptosis using polyclonal anti-single stranded DNA. Findings were compared with those obtained with bromocriptine treatment (10 mg/day, 2 weeks) of 5 patients with somatotropinomas, and 11 patients who received no preoperative treatment (control group). The octreotide group showed neither increase in stromal tissue nor cell death. The size of tumour cells appeared to be slightly reduced. No typical apoptotic bodies were seen on the electron micrographs. The apoptotic index in the octreotide group (0.40 ± 0.60%; mean ± SD) resembled that in the control group (0.81 ± 0.79%). In contast, the bromocriptine group showed some cell death and an increase in stromal tissue. The bromocriptine group also showed the apoptotic index which (20.1 ± 14.8%) was significantly higher than that of the control group (0.81 ± 0.79%). Thus, octreotide did not induce apoptosis in somatotropinomas despite the presence of tumour shrinkage. Because of the lack of fibrosis observed in the octreotide-treated tumours, the preoperative administration of octreotide may help to improve the outcome of the transsphenoidal operation.

    Notes: Summary In order to improve our ability to predict the regrowth of nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas, we tried to assess the correlation between growth fractions with Ki-67 and PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) and tumour doubling times in regrowing tumours, and also to find out any difference of growth fractions between the regrowing and the cured cases. In 33 patients with non-functioning pituitary adenomas, 14 cases including 11 with cavernous sinus invasion showed residual tumour on MRI after the operation (regrowing group) and 19 cases had no tumour regrowth on MRI within 5 years after the operation (cured group). Immunocytochemical studies were done with monoclonal antibodies (anti-PCNA, anti-Ki-67: MIB-1). The growth fraction of each tumour was estimated by calculating the ratio of the positive nuclei to the total number of tumour cells with the aid of an image analyser (Mac SCOPE). The tumour doubling times were estimated from serial CT or MRI with the aid of the image analyser (NIH image). Ki-67 staining indices ranged from 0.2% to 1.5% (n = 14, 0.86±0.10%; mean±SEM) in the regrowing group, and from 0.1% to 0.5% (n = 19, 0.23±0.03%) in the cured group. PCNA staining indices of the regrowing group ranged from 0.6% to 24% (n = 14, 3.7±1.6%). In the regrowing group, the tumour doubling times ranged from 200 to 2550 days (930±180 days), and showed a significant inverse correlation with Ki-67 staining indices, but no correlation with PCNA staining indices. The regrowing group showed a significantly higher Ki-67 staining index (n = 14, 0.86±0.10%) than the cured group (n = 19, 0.23±0.03%) (p〈0.01). These results indicate that immunocytochemical studies using MIB-1 may be better than those with PCNA for the prediction of regrowth in non-functioning pituitary adenomas. Immunocytochemical study with MIB-1 could lead to the accurate prediction of the rapid regrowing lesions in non-functioning adenomas.

    Notes: The expression of cytokeratins in 10 cases of clear cell hidradenoma, including 3 cases of solid cystic hidradenoma, were examined using 21 kinds of monoclonal antibodies. We divided them into three histologic patterns: massive nests with a few lumina (M nests), nests with some tubular lumina (L nests), and nests in solid cystic hidradenomas (S nests). All hidradenomas showed similar immunoreactivities to those in the lower dermal ducts or secretory cells of normal eccrine glands. With antibodies against simple epithelial cytokeratins (CKs 7, 8, 18, and 19), however, different immunostaining was noted among the three histologic patterns. Namely, the M nests failed to react to them, although some luminal cells in the L nests revealed a positive staining. Furthermore, a majority of luminal cells in the S nests revealed a positive staining with them. Therefore, we think that the luminal cells in solid cystic hidradenoma mainly differentiate toward the secretory cells, and that the M nests mainly differentiate toward the dermal duct. Those in the L nests are thought to differentiate toward the dermal duct and the secretory cells. The proportion of the differentiation toward luminal cells of dermal ducts to the differentiation toward secretory cells was the main difference among the three nests. In addition, there was no difference in immunophenotypes between clear cells and epidermoid cells in the two kinds of hidradenomas.

    Notes: In situ analysis of the terminating atomic plane of c-axis oriented La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films grown epitaxially on SrTiO3(100) substrate by laser molecular beam epitaxy has been carried out employing coaxial impact-collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS). The CAICISS time-of-flight spectroscopic studies reveal that the (001) surface of c-axis oriented La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films is predominantly terminated with MnO2 plane. The azimuth rotational CAICISS measurements show a fourfold symmetry in the surface atom alignments establishing the square lattice structure of the terminating plane. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have identified the surface polar structure of wurtzite-type ZnO films by coaxial impact-collision ion scattering spectroscopy. High-quality ZnO epitaxial films were prepared on sapphire (α-Al2O3) (0001) substrates by laser molecular beam epitaxy using a ZnO ceramic target. The (0001¯) crystallographic plane (the O face) was found to terminate the top surface of the ZnO film by comparing spectra of the films with those of well-defined (0001) and (0001¯) surfaces of bulk single crystals. The preferential [0001¯] growth direction of ZnO films is discussed from the viewpoints of the chemical interaction at the interface and surface stability against sublimation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background Although acyclovir (9-(2-hydroxyethoxymethyl) guaninc) is an antiviral drug that inhibits DNA polymerase of herpes virus, we have had the experience of an asthmatic patient's peak flow rate being improved by oral administration of acyclovir.Objective The aim of this experiment is whether acyclovir has anti-asthma effects using an asthma model in guinea-pigs.Methods The airway response was induced by a single inhalation of calcium ionophore A23187 (2 mg/mL). The airway obstruction was estimated by the ratio of expiration to inspiration time (E/I). The peribronchial eosinophil infiltration and eosinophil influx into bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid 7 h after the inhalation were also examined. To assess the effects of acyclovir (1, 10, and 100 mg/kg), aminophylline (20mg/kg) and pemirolast potassium (TBX, 20mg/kg) on A23187-induccd asthmatic response, the drugs were intraperitoneally administered before the inhalation.Results The immediate airway obstruction was significantly suppressed by acyclovir (10 mg/kg) and aminophylline, whereas different doses of acyclovir (1 and 100mg/kg) and TBX showed only a small inhibitory effect on the airway obstruction. On the other hand, the peribronchial eosinophilia was most successfully inhibited by TBX. Acyclovir (10 mg/kg) and aminophylline also suppressed the eosinophilia significantly. Furthermore, acyclovir significantly suppressed eosinophil influx into BAL fluid, whereas aminophylline and TBX weakly suppressed the influx.Conclusion These results suggest that acyclovir exhibits not only antiviral but also anti-asthma activity.

    Notes: We report a 52-year-old female with trichogenic trichoblastoma arising on the supraclavicular fossa. Clinical and histological examinations revealed a thumbnail sized, elastic, hard, subcutaneous nodule which consisted of keratinous cysts and epithelial cords of basaloid cells with locally follicular differentiation. Based on histological observations, a diagnosis of trichogenic trichoblastoma was made. An immunohistochemical study using a panel of monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratins was performed to investigate the nature and differentiation of this tumour. The most characteristic findings of the immunohistochemistry were CK 8 and 19 expression in the epithelial cords and the outer cells of the cystic structures. These immunoreactivities were similar to those of the outermost layer of the outer root sheath between the lower permanent portion and the upper transient portion, and immunostaining with the other antibodies confirmed this similarity. We can speculate that trichogenic trichoblastoma differentiates mainly toward the outermost layer of the outer root sheath between the lower permanent portion and the upper transient portion, and then into follicular structures.

    Notes: We report on electroluminescence (EL) from a surface emitting (planar) metal-polymer-metal structure. Two gold electrodes (separated by 20 μm) were evaporated on free-standing films of poly(phenylene vinylene), PPV. Polarized light emission was observed from tensile drawn PPV films. The planar structure enables spatial resolution of the emission from devices based on conjugated polymers. Spatially resolved EL measurements show that the recombination zone extends over about 10 μm. The emitting region is asymmetric with the maximum closer to the electron injecting contact. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The atomically ultrasmooth surfaces with atomic steps of sapphire substrates were obtained by annealing in air at temperatures between 1000 and 1400 °C. The terrace width and atomic step height of the ultrasmooth surfaces were controlled on an atomic scale by changing the annealing conditions and the crystallographic surface of substrates. The obtained ultrasmooth surface was stable in air. The topmost atomic structure of the terrace was examined quantitatively by atomic force microscopy and ion scattering spectroscopy as well as a theoretical approach using molecular dynamics simulations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
