    Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of development of the collateral circulation to the liver during hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) with the presence of hepatic tumours adjacent to the hepatic surface, and with pretreatment occlusion of aberrant hepatic arteries. In 102 patients with unresectable malignant hepatic tumours treated with HAIC using an implantable port system, development of collaterals to the liver was assessed with CT arteriography using the implantable port and pre- and postoperative angiography. Aberrant hepatic arteries, if present, were occluded prior to treatment for hepatic arterial redistribution. Collaterals to the liver were seen in 29 patients, who had 35 areas with collateral perfusion: 22 areas were in the right posterosuperior area, 6 in the left peripheral area and 7 in the right or left lobar area. Collaterals were revealed more frequently in patients with hepatic tumours adjacent to the hepatic surface than in those without hepatic tumours in peripheral areas in the liver (p 〈 0.0001). In addition, collaterals developed more frequently in patients with an aberrant hepatic arterial anatomy compared with those with conventional anatomy (p = 0.0007). Our results indicated that patients with hepatic tumours adjacent to the hepatic surface and with pretreatment occlusion of aberrant hepatic arteries had the potential to develop collaterals to the liver during HAIC.

    Notes: Abstract There is an increasing spread and incidence of penicillin-resistant bacteria that are becoming less susceptible to commonly prescribed oral antimicrobials, including extended-spectrum cephalosporins. Against this background, we undertook this study to determine the prevalence of penicillin resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae and the in-vitro activity of oral antimitrobials. Between April 1996 and December 1997, in 245 children with respiratory tract infections (bronchitis in 61, pharyngitis in 115, and tonsillitis in 69), 119 strains of Haemophilus influenzae, 89 strains of Streptococcus pyogenes, 61 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, 36 strains of Staphylococcus aureus, and 34 strains of Moraxella catarrhalis were isolated from the pharynx. The antimicrobial susceptibility of these isolates was assessed by a broth microdilution method. The isolation incidence of penicillin-intermediately resistant S. pneumoniae (PISP) and penicillin-highly resistant S. pneumoniae (PRSP) was 59.0% and 13.1%, respectively. Most strains of PISP and PRSP were highly resistant to cefaclor, cefpodoxime, cefteram, cefdinir, clarithromycin, ampicillin, and minocycline, but susceptibile to ofloxacin and cefditoren (CDTR). The in-vitro activity of CDTR was superior to that of other cephalosporins, such as cefaclor, cefdinir, and cefpodoxime, when tested against both the β-lactamase-positive and -negative H. influenzae isolated. CDTR was also active against all the other strains, including methicillin-sensitive S. aureus, S. pyogenes, and M. catarrhalis. This study suggested that CDTR was a useful oral antibiotic for pediatric respiratory tract infections.

    Notes: Abstract. Infrared absorption measurements using a multiple internal reflection geometry are reported for condensed methanol at 90 K on Ag island films deposited on the oxidized and hydrogen-terminated surfaces of Si(111). The attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectra obtained as a function of methanol exposure (up to 14 L) show that a 1-nm mass thickness of Ag island film on the oxidized Si(111) surface yields an absorption intensity 2–3 times larger than the intensity in the absence of Ag on the oxidized surface. Deposition of the same thickness of Ag on the hydrogen-terminated Si(111) surface results in approximately twice the enhancement. The different magnitudes of the enhancement are discussed based on SEM micrographs for Ag island films formed on the oxidized and H-terminated Si(111) surfaces.

    Notes: Abstract A new adhesion process of glass to metal was developed based on the redox reaction without oxidation of the metal surface. PbO-based glasses were strongly adhered to nickel metal at low temperature (400–500 °C) in a low-oxygen atmosphere (〈 0.1 p.p.m.). The interfaces between glasses and metal were analysed by SEM-EDS. It was found that the reaction layer and lead metal were formed by the redox reaction at the interface. In the case of the adhesion of PbO-based glasses containing CuO to nickel, the main reduced product in the glass was Cu2O, and lead was not detected. The redox reaction was simulated by a thermodynamic equilibrium theory; the results agreed with the analysis by SEM-EDS.

    Notes: Abstract Superconducting thin films of Y-Ba-Cu-O were prepared on single-crystal MgO (100) substrates by the mist microwave-plasma chemical vapour deposition (MPCVD) using an aqueous solution of metal nitrate. The growth rate was observed to be controlled by the concentration of metal nitrate in the solution. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the prepared films consisted of 123 phase with c-axis orientation perpendicular to the substrates. The dependence of T c-zero (zero resistance) of films on the microwave power was investigated. In addition, the effect of the ozone on the preparation of films was investigated. The maximum T c-zero (84 K) of as-deposited films was obtained at a metal concentration in the solution of 0.50 moll−1, a microwave power of 300 W and an ozone concentration in oxygen gas of 3.0%.

    Notes: Abstract Hollow glass microspheres named expanded perlite have been prepared from perlite, but the size is usually above 20 μm. Recently fine microspheres with low density are desired. In the conventional preparation method, it is difficult to produce fine expanded perlite with particle size under 20 μm because the water contained in finely milled perlite particle, which is the origin of foaming, is evolved during heating process. Fluidized sand-bed furnace is a useful tool to heat the fine particle rapidly. Using the rapid heat furnace fine expanded perlite with particle size under 15 μm and bulk density under 0.5 g/cm3 is prepared successfully. Foaming conditions are discussed by water contents and foaming temperatures. Existence states of water are interpreted by temperature-programmed desorption method and FT-IR spectrum.
