    Notes: Summary A clinico-pathological case report on a case of juvenile Parkinson's disease (JPD) with widespread Lewy bodies (LBs) in the brain is presented with comparative morphological studies on two demented cases of “classical” Parkinson's disease (CPD) with disease onset at an older age. The clinical and histological pictures of this JPD case were typical of Parkinson's disease, excepting numerous Lewy bodies in the cerebrum. There were no neurofibrillary change nor senile plaques throughout the CNS. The distribution and histochemical and ultrastructural characters of the histological lesions (i.e., LBs) in the JPD and the two CPD cases were investigated and compared. The comparison showed no qualitative but only quantitative differences between the two types of Parkinson's disease. The present study also revealed that in CPD cases significant numbers of LBs could be present in the cerebral cortex, amygdaloid and claustrum. These lesions can be in part responsible for dementia in CPD.

    Notes: Summary The brain of an autopsy case of Menkes' kinky hair disease (MKHD), after routine histological examination, was studied extensively by electron microscopy, particularly the mitochondrial alterations. There were widespread mitochondrial abnormalities, including enlargement with tubulo-vesiculated cristae, swelling, and dense body formation and occasional accumulation of glycogen within mitochondria, in addition to increased numbers of mitochondria in some neurons. These abnormalities of mitochondria were present in decreasing severity in the following: Purkinje cells, neurons of the molecular and granule cell layers of the cerebellum, and neurons of the cerebral cortex, globus pallidus, lateral nuclei of the thalamus, caudate nucleus, and the myelinated axons in the white matter. This distribution and the degree of mitochondrial abnormalities in the various structures of the brain were compared with those of degenerative lesions in the respective structures. The comparison disclosed that there was a positive correlation between the two. The mitochondrial enlargement and swelling as in the present study had been well documented in the brain of the brindled mouse; mitochondrial dense bodies had also been reported in previous case reports of MKHD by other authors. The present study strongly suggests that the mitochondrial disease is an essential abnormality and may be responsible for the progressive degeneration of the CNS in MKHD.

    Notes: Summary The olfactory bulbs and stalks were examined in a case of Pick's disease that showed numerous and widespread Pick bodies in the brain. Typical argyrophilic inclusions (Pick bodies) were found not only in many cells of the anterior olfactory nucleus but also in some mitral cells and tufted cells. In addition, neuronal loss and astrocytosis were evident. No neurofibrillary change or senile plaque were detected anywhere in these structures. Electron microscopy disclosed that there was no ultrastructural difference between Pick bodies in the olfactory bulb and those in the cerebral cortex or hippocampus. These data indicate that in Pick's disease mitral cells and tufted cells, as well as anterior olfactory nucleus cells, are affected by degeneration specific to Pick's disease.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of development of the collateral circulation to the liver during hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) with the presence of hepatic tumours adjacent to the hepatic surface, and with pretreatment occlusion of aberrant hepatic arteries. In 102 patients with unresectable malignant hepatic tumours treated with HAIC using an implantable port system, development of collaterals to the liver was assessed with CT arteriography using the implantable port and pre- and postoperative angiography. Aberrant hepatic arteries, if present, were occluded prior to treatment for hepatic arterial redistribution. Collaterals to the liver were seen in 29 patients, who had 35 areas with collateral perfusion: 22 areas were in the right posterosuperior area, 6 in the left peripheral area and 7 in the right or left lobar area. Collaterals were revealed more frequently in patients with hepatic tumours adjacent to the hepatic surface than in those without hepatic tumours in peripheral areas in the liver (p 〈 0.0001). In addition, collaterals developed more frequently in patients with an aberrant hepatic arterial anatomy compared with those with conventional anatomy (p = 0.0007). Our results indicated that patients with hepatic tumours adjacent to the hepatic surface and with pretreatment occlusion of aberrant hepatic arteries had the potential to develop collaterals to the liver during HAIC.

    Notes: In this work, measurements of temperature-dependent dc conduction current in BaTiO3-based multilayer ceramic capacitors have been made. It was found that there is tunnel-like conduction current near Curie temperature of BaTiO3 where the current showed a temperature-independent characteristic. For the study of this abnormal phenomenon, the structural nature of insulating solids of practical importance is emphasized. A new concept has been introduced to explain the positive temperature coefficient anomaly in BaTiO3-based ceramic dielectrics. It was presumed that a Schottky process dominates the conduction current at the Curie temperature. It was also assumed that the Schottky process is controlled by the phase transition of BaTiO3-based ceramics near the Curie temperature where the effective work function, which changes with the temperature, is inherently related to the density of the paraelectric cubic crystals. Based on the proposed model, it was found that the calculated results are accurately correlated with the experimental ones. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The discharge and tracking phenomena induced on the polymer dielectric materials by acid rain are investigated by the accelerated aging of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer in artificial rainwater in this article. Based on the investigation of acid rain, the artificial rainwater is chosen to agree well with the actual ingredients of precipitation. The influence of hydrophobicity degradation on the surface discharge and tracking is studied. The relations among the surface discharge, tracking, hydrophobicity, and microchemical structure and physical morphology of material are furthermore discussed. Experimental results show that the polymer dielectric materials suffer a large attack and degradation from acid rain. The dielectric surface degrades and becomes rough, and the hydrophobicity decreases so that the surface discharge and tracking may occur on them. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
