Notes: Abstract To investigate the properties of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) synthesizing enzyme, glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), in the brain and the pancreatic islets of the rat, GABA concentration in the brain and the pancreatic islets was measured after intraperitoneal administration of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MP) at 25 mg/kg. 60 min after the administration of 3-MP, GABA concentration in the hypothalamus, the superior colliculus and the hippocampus of the brain decreased by 20–30% and in the pancreatic islets by 35%. The concentration in the pancreatic acini did not change. Western blotting showed that GAD activity in the pancreatic islets decreased after administration of 3-MP compared to the control. The activity of GAD in the pancreatic islets as well as brain can be modified by a convulsant, in this case 3-MP. These results suggest the properties of GAD may be similar in the pancreatic islets and brain.

Notes: summary In mandibulectomy patients with lateral discontinuity defect, the mandible is severely deviated and the occlusion is considered to be unstable. A thorough understanding of the mandibular occlusal position of these patients is important to achieve desirable results in their occlusal rehabilitation. This study compared the stability of the mandibular positions in occlusion, when the opening distance or the biting force was changed during mandibular movements, by simultaneously measuring four points on the mandible three-dimensionally. This study indicated that the mandibular positions in occlusion of these patients were extremely unstable as compared with those of the normal subjects and were considerably different from each other when the opening distance or the biting force was changed during mandibular movements.

Notes: Growth of ZnSe/MgS strained-layer superlattices (SLSs) has been carried out by molecular beam epitaxy. The crystal quality of SLSs degraded with MgS thickness of more than about 3 monolayers. Photoluminescence due to the transition between quantized levels was observed. Photoluminescence peak energies higher than 3.0 eV at 77 K were observed, which are comparable to that of ZnMgSSe quaternary material. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background: High levels of interleukin-5 (IL-5) are found in the alveolar space of patients with eosinophilic pneumonia (EP). IL-5 promotes the growth and differentiation of eosinophils, as well as activating these cells. IL-5 also induces the expression of CD44 on eosinophils in vitro. To evaluate the contribution of CD44 to the pathogenesis of EP, we examined the expression of CD44 on eosinophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and measured the concentration of soluble CD44 (sCD44) in BALF from patients with EP. Methods: The concentrations of IL-5, sCD44, and hyaluronic acid (HA) were measured in BALF. The expression levels of CD44 on eosinophils in BALF and peripheral blood in patients with EP were compared. Results: The expression of CD44 on alveolar eosinophils and the concentration of sCD44 were increased in BALF of patients with EP. There was a significant correlation between IL-5 and sCD44 in BALF. A high concentration of HA was observed in BALF of EP patients. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the high expression of CD44 on eosinophils probably results from upregulation by IL-5 and could be important in the pathogenesis of EP.

Notes: Abstract A23187 (6S-[6α,8β,9β,11α]-5-(methylamino)-2-[[3,9,11-trimethyl-8-[1-methyl-2-oxo-2-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)ethyl]-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undec-2-yl]methyl]-4-benzoxazolecarboxylic acid, calcimycin), an antibiotic Ca2+ ionophore, produces an endothelium-dependent vascular relaxation. In the present study, pharmacological features were functionally characterized of endothelium-dependent relaxant response of guinea-pig aorta to A23187, especially focusing on the possible Ca2+ source and Ca2+ mobilization mechanisms in endothelial cells responsible for the vasorelaxant response to the Ca2+ ionophore. A23187-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation was suppressed profoundly by N G-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA; 3×10–4 M) or calmidazolium (3×10–5 M), suggesting that nitric oxide (NO) produced by the enhanced activation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) is largely responsible for the relaxant response of this artery to A23187. In the Ca2+-free solution without EGTA, NO-mediated endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by A23187 was almost abolished, which suggests that Ca2+ entry from extracellular space into endothelial cells plays the key role in the A23187-induced functional vasorelaxation. On the other hand, SK&F96365 (1-[β-[3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propoxy]-4-methoxyphenethyl]-1H-imidazole; 5×10–5 M) and Ni2+ (3×10–4 M), both of which inhibit capacitative Ca2+ influx through store-operated Ca2+ channels (SOCCs), attenuated significantly NO-mediated endothelium-dependent relaxation by A23187. Furthermore, A23187-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation was suppressed more strongly than endothelium-independent relaxation induced by SIN-1 (3-morpholino-sydnonimine), an NO donor, when aortic preparation was preconstricted with high KCl instead of agonistic stimulation (prostaglandin F2 α). These findings suggest that NO-mediated endothelium-dependent relaxant response of guinea-pig aorta to A23187 is preceded by the increase in endothelial cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) due to the enhanced Ca2+ influx from extracellular space. In the enhanced Ca2+ entry leading to the stimulation of eNOS and NO-mediated functional relaxant response of guinea-pig aorta to A23187, activation of SOCCs but not the Ca2+ entry through plasma membrane Ca2+-specific routes made by A23187 seems to play the predominant role. It is most likely that A23187 acts primarily at the Ca2+ store sites in endothelial cells, which subsequently depletes stored Ca2+ to activate SOCCs via unidentified mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract Bimetallic Cu/Ni colloidal dispersions (the core catalyst) stabilised by a combination of calcium and barium stearates as protective colloids (catalyst C) showed a remarkable catalytic activity-several times higher than that of the core catalyst stabilised by barium stearate only (catalyst A) for the amination reaction of low reactive oxo-alcohols, having steric hindrance by branched alkyls, with dimethylamine to prepare N,N-dimethyl tertiary amines. Application of the catalyst C for the same amination reaction of dodecyl alcohol could be performed at a lower catalyst concentration of even 100 ppm based on copper at 220° C with a tertiary amine yield of 92% in a three hours' reaction. The reaction mixture containing catalyst C formed a gel at room temperature and formed a stable homogeneous solution with acetone as a polar solvent. It is postulated that water-repellency of calcium stearate and further incorporation of barium stearate as a second promoter yields a doubly stabilised structure for the core catalyst resulting in a remarkable increase in catalytic activity.

Notes: Summary A theoretical study of the transition of a three-dimensional boundary layer on a sphere rotating in still fluid is carried out by a linear stability analysis. A set of perturbation equations governing the instability of the flow field is derived assuming the perturbations to be consisting of spiral vortices. It is shown that the critical Reynolds numbers obtained in the present analytical study are close to those observed in experiments. It has been found that the streamline-curvature instability appears in the rotating sphere flow. It is also shown that the cross-flow instability is dominant near the poles of a sphere while the streamline-curvature instability overtakes near the equator.

Notes: Summary A theoretical study is presented for the stability characteristics of the laminar free convection boundary layer flow along a vertical porous (permeable) flat plate subjected to a constant heat flux. The disturbance equations are solved numerically on the basis of the linear stability theory for a wide range of values of the modified Grashof number,G, and some values of the suction or injection parameterX when the Prandtl number, Pr, is 0.73 (air). These solutions indicate the important role of the parametersG andX on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. It is found that the present results are in very good agreement with those from the open literature.
