Notes: Alta, a scarlet-red solution used by some Indian women as a cosmetic to colour their feet, was found to be associated with depigmentation at the site of application. Chromatographic and spectroscopic analysis of 3 brands of alta confirmed the presence of 2 dyes: Crocein Scarlet MOO (CSM) (brilliant crocein) and rhodamine B (tetraethyl rhodamine). Patch testing produced depigmentation at the site of application of alta, CSM and para-phenylenediamine (PPD). Although PPD has been reported to produce leukoderma, azo dyes have not previously been reported as depigmenting agents.

Notes: Epitaxial growth of PbSe on (111)- and (100)-oriented Si substrates without an intermediate buffer layer is studied. It is found that on Si(111) the orientation of the IV-VI layer can by varied from (100) at 200 °C to (111) at 400 °C substrate temperature. On Si(100), only (100)-oriented layers were obtained for the whole temperature range. (100)-oriented layers with thicknesses above 0.5 μm were cracked due to thermally induced mechanical strain on cooldown to room temperature. This strain cannot be relaxed by dislocation glide in the first glide systems as it is the case for (111)-oriented layers. The structural quality of (100)-oriented PbSe layers on Si(100) and Si(111) is inferior compared to layers grown with an intermediate BaF2/CaF2 or CaF2 buffer layer. This implies that the covalent/ionic PbSe/Si interface seems to impede high-quality epitaxy, contrary to the well known ionic/ionic IV-VI/IIa-fluoride interface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The microstructure of (112) oriented CuInSe2 heteroepitaxial layers grown with molecular beam epitaxy on (111) oriented Si wafers was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Experimental and calculated diffraction patterns of different zone axes were compared. Extra spots are caused by rotational twins on (112) growth planes. Six twin variants rotated by ±120°, ±60° and 180° about the [221] axis were identified in the layers. The tetragonal chalcopyrite structure of CuInSe2, the crystal symmetry of the substrate and variations of the growth conditions during the growth are responsible for the formation of these rotational twins. Coherent twin boundaries as well as partly coherent boundaries of twin variants rotated by ±60° and 180° were imaged by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The boundaries can be formed by inserting partial dislocations with Burgers vectors a/6〈111¯〉 into the CuInSe2 structure. This suggests that the annealing of the samples induces the annihilation of these partial dislocations and consequently reduces the density of twins in the CuInSe2 layers. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Dispersion characteristics and wave impedance for the even and odd modes of the broad side coupled dielectric image guides are computed by using mode matching techniques. Dispersion curves for broadside image guide are plotted for various dielectric materials and dimensional parameters as a function of frequency. Normalized electric field for dominant electric field component E of TM even and odd modes for various half spacings between two dielectric slabs of broadside coupled image guide have been plotted. Polysterene (∈ r=2.56) and Stycast (∈ r=3.4) have been used as dielectric materials in fabricating broadside coupled image guide. This broadside coupled dielectric guide is very convenient as compared to the other dielectric guides. Since in case of broadside coupled image guide the dielectric slab can be bonded to the side metallic walls using some low loss adhesive material, while in other coupled dielectric guides the dielectric slab have to be supported by some low dielectric constant material (Eccofoam with ∈ r=1.02) to maintain the proper distance of side metallic walls from the dielectric slab. Since this structure is symmetrical, this configuration can be analysed in terms of even and odd mode phase velocities. The difference in these even and off mode phase velocities can be used to determine the coupling between coupled dielectric slab. Various couplers in this configuration can be realised.

Notes: Summary The single radial haemolysis (SRH) test was standardised for the detection of goat pox antigen and antibody. In this test soluble antigens, and serum prepared against soluble antigens were used for coupling sheep erythrocytes to detect goat pox antibody and antigen, respectively. This test was compared with the agar gel precipitation test (AGPT) and counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) test; the 2 most commonly used tests for goat pox diagnosis. SRH was found to be as sensitive as AGPT and CIE in detecting antigen and antibody (x2=2·9, P〉0·05).

Notes: Summary A spot agglutination test was standardised for the rapid diagnosis of goat pox using antigen and antibody systems after being coupled to glutaraldehyde-treated sheep erythrocytes. The sensitivity was comparable to that of counter-immuno-electrophoresis and reverse-phase passive haemagglutination tests. The spot agglutination test was found to be very simple, easy to perform, rapid and economical for the detection of goat pox antigen and antibody and can be performed under field conditions.
