Notes: Abstract Recently, stent implantation has become the treatment of choice for patients with tracheobronchial stenosis due to malignant tumours, tuberculosis and recurrent stenosis following lung transplant. However, reports on this procedure in infants with congenital bronchial stenosis are extremely rare. We report successful stent implantation in an infant with congenital left bronchial stenosis followed by rapid improvement in his respiratory condition. Conclusion The use of a stent in infants is still controversial because size mismatch will take place with growth. However, we believe that implantation of a metallic stent can be the preferred treatment of congenital bronchial stenosis even in small infants.

Notes: Theoretical analysis of the output performance of a transverse discharge pumped neon Penning laser (585.3 nm) using a mixture of Ne/H2 is described. The validity of the kinetic model is confirmed by comparing the results to the experimental discharge and laser performance. It is theoretically shown that the optimum mixing ratio of the Ne/H2 mixture is 1:2.5, and the optimum operating pressure is about 56 Torr. The model also predicts that the intrinsic efficiency reaches a peak of 8.5×10−6 at an excitation rate of 0.5 MW/cm3 under the optimum mixing ratio and operating pressure conditions. At excitation rates in excess of 0.5 MW/cm3 the laser output power is slowly increasing and then saturates due to electron collisional quenching of the upper laser level. The laser power extraction is increased by laser injection seeding in order to rapidly build up the lasing. The improved intrinsic efficiency is about two times higher than without the injection seeding. The improved specific laser output is 8 W/cm3, therefore, a discharge volume of 125 cm3 will be able to generate the peak laser power reaching 1 kW. This power value is sufficient to obtain the same treatment effect as the gold vapor laser used in photodynamic therapy. Moreover, by fitting this model to the experimental results of the laser output energy with a Ne/D2 mixture, it is shown that the Penning ionization rate constant of H2 is larger than that of D2. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report a simple technique for fabricating a layer of isolated Si quantum dots on SiO2 glass substrates. This technique uses conventional low-pressure chemical-vapor deposition for an extremely short deposition time in the early stage of poly-Si film growth. The layer after a deposition time of 60 s has isolated Si nanocrystals 5–20 nm in diameter and 2–10 nm in height. The measurements of optical absorption coefficient α show that the absorption edge for Si nanocrystals shifts to higher energies compared to that of bulk Si, indicating a widening of the energy gap caused by quantum size effects. The linear relationship (αhν)1/2 against hν suggests that the Si nanocrystal, whose diameter is as small as 10 nm, basically maintains the properties of an indirect band-gap semiconductor. Special attention must be paid to the Brownian migration of Si nanocrystals for fabricating Si quantum dots. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. Serum lysozyme is used as a marker of sarcoidosis disease activity. In this study we examined the association between lysozyme levels and the clinical features of sarcoidosis and thus the clinical usability of this parameter in a large population. One hundred ten sarcoidosis patients from central Japan were examined for clinical features and serum lysozyme level at the first visit to our hospital and on a regular basis thereafter. The sensitivity of lysozyme for predicting sarcoidosis was 79.1%, whereas that of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) was 59.0%. Even in the cases without an elevated serum ACE level, a value of 72.1% was obtained. The serum lysozyme level demonstrated a significant tendency to increase with the number of organs involved (p 〈 0.01). There were significant differences among the four radiographic stages (p 〈 0.05). The maximum serum lysozyme levels of patients without a disappearance of abnormal shadows on chest radiography within 5 years were significantly greater than those of individuals with a disappearance (p 〈 0.05). A positive correlation between serum lysozyme and serum ACE levels was observed. Because serum lysozyme is much less specific for sarcoidosis than serum ACE, its diagnostic value may be limited. However, the sensitivity was high even when serum ACE levels were within normal limits and correlated well with clinical features in sarcoidosis. Therefore, this parameter seems suitable for disease monitoring in proven cases.

Notes: Abstract. Two patients who had a balloon angioplasty for native coarctation of the aorta as neonates underwent redilatation for restenosis 1 or 2 months after the initial procedure. We recorded intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) images at redilatation. Before redilatation, there was an abnormal, localized area of ultrasound density equal to the inner layer of the aorta. The enlargement of this tissue was in proportion to the severity of stenosis and diminished after dilatations. No intimal flaps or tears were observed. From the IVUS images it appears that the mechanism to relieve the coarctation of our patients may be compression of this abnormal tissue.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes developments of the physicochemical part of a computer code system that estimates DNA strand break induction on plasmid pBR322 DNA. In order to test the reliability of the model, we evaluated the dielectric function and the time-dependent yield of chemical species in the presence of OH radical scavenger or dissolved oxygen. Results agree with measurements on the radiolysis of liquid water. When a hybrid model of a liquid inelastic cross-section and a vapour elastic cross-section is used, energy deposition by vibrational excitations is estimated to be approximately 11% of total energy deposition.

Notes: Abstract We present a new Monte Carlo simulation code system (DBREAK) of the detailed events that occur when ionizing radiation interacts with water and DNA molecules. The model treats the initial energy deposition by radiation, the formation of chemically active species, subsequent diffusion-controlled chemical reactions, and induction of DNA strand breaks. DBREAK assumes one-hit single-strand break (SSB) and two-hit double-strand break (DSB) mechanisms. A high-resolution model of plasmid DNA structure has been introduced. The calculated results are compared with the results of previously performed experiments of the same type. Under aerobic conditions, 89.4% of the DNA damage was attributed to OH-radical and 10.5% and 0.1% to e– aq and H, respectively. We also compared the differences between liquid-water track structure and gas-phase-water track structure. The calculated yield of SSBs by liquid-water track structure exceeded that of gas-phase-water track structure by a factor of 1.2.
