Notes: The morphology of the crystalline–amorphous interface is studied during solid-phase epitaxial crystallization of amorphous GeSi alloy layers with depth-dependent Ge distributions. The interface is shown to undergo an initial strain-induced roughening transition when the Ge concentration exceeds 6.6 at. %. As crystallization continues in strain-relaxed material the interface is shown to further roughen or smooth in response to changes in the Ge distribution. This evolution of the interface morphology is shown to be a consequence of kinetic effects whereby the differential velocity between the leading and trailing edges of the rough interface increases in regions of increasing Ge concentration and decreases in regions of decreasing Ge concentration. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In order to protect the sensitive waters in Tolo harbour (Hong Kong), Sha Tin and Tai Po sewage-treatment works were first designed to remove 70% of the nitrogen load from the sewage. Since then, due to continuing serious eutrophication problems in the harbour, both plants have been modified to increase the removal efficiency to 90%.The modifications were based on the Bardenpho process. However, the designers of the two plants adopted different approaches to process intensity, complexity and control of bacterial foam. At Sha Tin, the average monthly results have shown an increase of total nitrogen removal from 60–70% to about 80% since its completion. The addition of methanol was found to be ineffective on further enhancement of the denitrification rate due to difficulties in the apportioning of the second anoxic zone. The overall monthly results for Tai Po have also shown an increase in the removal rate to about 80%, even though 90% was achieved for a short period of time. The major problem encountered at the latter plant was that the process design did not provide an effective control on bacterial foaming, which had affected the smooth operation of the process.

Notes: Abstract The reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPH-d) activity in the axon terminals presynaptic to the submucous neurons of guinea-pig intestine following unilateral cervical vagotomy was studied by electron microscopy. The reaction product of diaphorase was localized only in the axon terminals that contained predominantly small agranular vesicles, and it was usually deposited around the vesicles. The terminals that contained predominantly large granular or flattened vesicles did not display any signs of diaphorase reactivity. Although there were only few diaphorase-positive submucous neurons in the small intestine, a considerable number of diaphorase-positive axon terminals was observed in the submucous ganglia of the small intestine in the control animals. Ten days after vagotomy, the quantitative study showed that when compared with the control animals, the number of diaphorase-positive terminals in the submucous ganglia of duodenum, mid-small intestine and colon in the vagotomized animals was reduced (P〈0.05). When the NADPHd-positive terminals were examined in closer detail, it was found that only a small proportion of them showed signs of degeneration as evidenced by the swelling and vacuolation of their contents of mitochondria, with disrupted cristae and clumping of synaptic vesicles. It was therefore concluded that at least some of the diaphorasepositive axon terminals in the submucous ganglia of guinea-pig intestine originated from the vagus nerve.
