Notes: Abstract We screened the microorganisms that are present on the surface of Picea glehnii seeds and produced antifungal compounds against Pythium vexans, a fungus that causes damping-off. Four isolates of Penicillium species that produced patulin, citrinin, palitantin, and arthrographol, respectively, were identified from 149 different microorganisms screened. This study is the first step in an examination of the ecological interaction between host conifers and fungi located on the surface of their seeds.

Notes: Abstract Bicrystals of SrTiO3 with twisted boundaries were prepared by a HIP method and were observed with a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The bicrystals exhibited different nonlinear current-voltage characteristics depending on twist angle. A Molecular dynamics calculation was applied in order to understand the detailed interface structure. The periodicity of the Σ5 twisted boundary was calculated to be 1.58 times longer than the lattice constant of SrTiO3 along the (130) axis, and agreed with the periodicity observed by TEM, i.e., 1.57. Coincidence sites formed between Ti ions of the TiO2 layer and O ions of the SrO layer at the interface and did not shift the positions predicted by a coincidence sites lattice model; such coincidence sites caused the structural periodicity along the interface.

Notes: Abstract The electrode reaction was examined on ceria coated YSZ by a platinum point electrode in H2-H2O atmosphere at 973 K- 1173 K. The thickness of the ceria coating layer was altered from 0 to 2.5 µm, fabricated by a laser ablation and by a vacuum vapor deposition method on YSZ single crystals. The electrode / electrolyte interface conductivity increased with 1/4 powers ofp(H2) andp(H2O) on both ceria coated and non-coated YSZ. The interface conductivity was significantly improved on a thicker ceria coating surface than 1 µm. The effective electrode reaction radius also increased in a thick ceria coating. The18O/16O exchange experiment at low oxygen partial pressure revealed that the oxygen surface exchange rate of ceria is not high compared with that of YSZ. It can be concluded that the bulk ionic conduction of ceria makes a more effective contribution to the electrode reaction than the surface catalytic activity in H2-H2O atmosphere.
