Notes: Summary Intradural extramedullary glial tumours of the spinal cord are rare. We report four such tumours arising from the dorsal cord. Myelography and operative findings were almost similar to that of an intradural neurofibroma. Surgical removal had resulted in rewarding neurological recovery. One of them had a recurrence after six years and was re-explored. Anterolateral attachment near the root entry zone suggests its origin probably from the spinal cord with an exophytic growth.

Notes: Abstract The rate of sedimentation and the source of sediments in the lake basins of Nainital region, Kumaun Himalaya, have been estimated employing210Pb and210Ra methods. This has yielded a rate of sedimentation of 11.5, 4.70, 3.72, and 3.00 mm/yr in Nainital, Bhimtal, Naukuchiyatal, and Sattal lakes, respectively. The higher rate of sedimentation in Nainital lake, compared to other lakes, is related to faster erosion in the catchment aided by greater anthropogenic activity, while the slowest rate in Sattal lake is due to less erosion and more input of soil-derived material involving a slow rate of accumulation.

Notes: Abstract Sediment accumulation rates have been determined in Udai Sagar, Fateh Sagar and Pichola lakes, which lie in the arid climatic zone, using the210Pb method. The rate of sedimentation estimated in these lakes is 8.9, 3.42, and 2.80 mm/yr, respectively. River inflow, mining activity, and lithology contribute to controling the sediment deposition pattern in Udai Sagar Lake, whereas in Fateh Sagar and Pichola lakes, anthropogenic activity and erosion of loosely bound terrigenous material through wave action and varying lithology are the major contributors. Furthermore, a contribution from atmospheric fallout has not been ruled out due to occurrence of frequent duststorms, owing to strong wind conditions aided by barren hills devoid of vegetation as well as dumping of mining wastes in the area. The higher TDS and lower sedimentation rate in Pichola Lake compared to Fateh Sagar are due to the limestone lithology and better maintenance in the former, such as construction of parks, graveled roads, etc., to check the flow of silt into the lake. Fluctuations in metal content, for example, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Sr, and sedimentation rates are due to the variation in the sediment input at different time intervals.

Notes: Abstract A new restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) detected for the human glutathione S-transferase-pi (GST3) gene with the restriction endonuclease,BamHI (GGATCC) is described. Because of the association of GST isozymes with certain human diseases, the data on involvement of different GST loci, their chromosomal location and information on RFLPs are of potential diagnostic value.

Notes: Summary The frequencies of chromosome aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs), cell proliferation kinetics and mitotic indices were studied in peripheral blood lymphocyte cultures of leprosy patients both before and after chemotherapy. The differences in the frequencies of chromosome aberrations and SCEs between controls, paucibacillary and multibacillary patients were found to be statistically highly significant (P 〈 0.001). The extent of cytogenetic damage seemed to depend on the severity of the disease. Lymphocytes of untreated leprosy patients showed a low mitotic index and a slow rate of cell proliferation. Following combined treatment with dapsone and rifampicin there was an increase, but to a lesser degree (P 〈 0.01), in the frequency of SCEs and chromosome aberrations while the drug combination of dapsone, rifampicin and clofazamine had a non-mutagenic effect on chromosomes of the patient. Furthermore, after drug treatment, the cell proliferation rate and mitotic indices in paucibacillary patients were comparable to that of controls. These results indicate the clastogenic potency of Mycobacterium leprae and the remedial effects that follow therapeutic drug treatment.

Notes: Summary Traumatic intraventricular haemorrhage (TVH) is rare. The clinical profile and prognosis in 16 patients with traumatic intraventricular haemorrhage after blunt head injury are evaluated. Majority of the patients (94%) had low Glasgow coma score (〈8) on admission and none had a lucid interval. CT showed haematoma adjacent to the foramen of Monroe in 5 patients and localised to the frontal horn or the body of the lateral ventricle in six. The mortality was 62.5% in this subgroup of patients with head injury. Our findings are compared to those of previous reports in the literature. The poor prognosis of cases with TVH reflects the severity of trauma and general brain damage and is probably not related only to the intraventricular bleeding.

Notes: An analysis of structure and discrimination in simple chiral fluids is presented. The chiral molecules consist of a central carbon bonded to four distinct groups. Molecular-dynamics simulations have been performed on a one-component chiral fluid and on two racemic mixtures. For the racemates, discrimination, as measured by differences in pair distribution functions, is present but found to be small. Intermolecular pair interaction energies are found to be good predictors of the magnitude and the sign (mirror-image pairs favored) of the differences observed in site–site distribution functions. For the one-component fluid, the quality of structural predictions from the reference-interaction-site method and Chandler–Silbey–Ladanyi (CSL) integral equation theories, with the hypernetted chain (HNC) and Percus–Yevick closures, has been examined. These theories generally provide a qualitatively correct description of the site–site distributions. Extensions beyond the HNC level have been explored: Two-field-point bridge diagrams have been explicitly evaluated and included in the CSL theory. The inclusion of these diagrams significantly improves the quality of the integral equation theories. Since the CSL theory has not been used extensively, and bridge diagrams have been evaluated in only a few instances, a detailed analysis of their impact is presented. For racemic mixtures, diagram evaluation is shown to be crucial. Specifically, the differences in site–site distributions for sites on identical and mirror-image molecules are found to originate from bridge diagrams which involve interactions between four-site, or larger, clusters. Discrimination cannot be predicted from an integral equation theory which neglects these diagrams. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
