Notizen: The incorporation of radioactive phosphate into proteins of both normal and regenerating superior cervical ganglion nerve of the rat is reported. Incorporation studies carried out by in vitro and in vivo methods are compared. In the in vitro method, excised intact ganglia or their homogenates were incubated in the presence of inorganic phosphate or ATP, respectively, under various conditions. Proteins were analyzed by gel electrophoresis followed by autoradiography, in which quantitative but not qualitative differences between regenerating and control cases were apparent. In the in vivo procedure, inorganic phosphate was injected into the living animal 4 h before removal of ganglia. At least fivefold more proteins became labeled in vivo than in vitro, whereas no similarity in the pattern of labeling between the two methods was observed. For example, the most heavily labeled protein in the in vivo method, tentatively identified as micro tubule-associated protein-2, was not detected on autoradiograms of proteins labeled by the in vitro method. In this latter method, an 85-kDa species and growth-associated pro-tein-43 were always labeled, and the extent of their phosphorylation was enhanced by the additional presence of phosphatidylserine and Ca2+, a result indicating that these labeled species are substrates of protein kinase C. The in vitro conditions also led to the labeling of proteins identified as a-and β-tubulin. Comparison of the methods suggests that removal of the ganglion interferes with the function of protein phosphorylation systems and that this effect involves elements of the cytoskeleton.

Notizen: [Auszug] Previous estimates of displacement rates on individual faults have been limited to neotectonic faults and averaged over time intervals of about 200 kyr or less. These estimates have been highly variable, which has led to a belief that longer-term displacement rates on individual faults are ...

Notizen: Abstract A boy with abdominal Burkitt's lymphoma developed rectal bleeding, abdominal distension, pain, and fever three weeks after diagnosis. Imaging studies revealed a necrotic tumor mass allowing a fistulous pathway from the ileum to the proximal colon. A laparotomy was performed, with resection of the large necrotic tumor. The child recovered, and has had no further evidence of Burkitt's disease. The radiological evaluation performed in this case ensured proper medical management and surgical intervention during a life-threatening event. the possibility of bowel perforation as a complication of therapy for abdominal lymphoma must be recognized.

Notizen: Abstract  A single episode of pine pollen release in the highly contaminated area of Novozybkov, Russian Federation, which led to enhanced atmospheric concentrations of 137Cs is discussed. The pollen grains were sampled by a rotating arm impactor and analysed by gamma-spectrometry for 137Cs activity and by image analysis for their size. In the vicinity of a forest, a maximum concentration of 4.5±0.4 mBq m–3 was measured, and a mean activity per pollen grain of 260±80 nBq was determined. The emission rate of the Novozybkov mixed pine forest was estimated to be approximately 400 Bq m–2 per year. Because of the large size of pine pollen grains (about 50 µm) and the short emission period of 5–8 days per year, the estimated potential annual inhalation doses are very low. Biological emissions including pollen release may be a source of increased airborne radionuclide concentrations at larger distances from the source areas as well.
