Notes: It is shown that care must be exercised in using digital equipment when making Hall measurements in a van der Pauw setup employing the ASTM standard method. This arises because of quantization error when working near the sensitivity limit of the equipment. For materials with small Hall mobilities (〈100 cm2/V s) this can lead to an incorrect specification of the carrier type and inconsistent mobility behavior. A simple averaging and sampling procedure is suggested to suppress this type of behavior and is found to be sufficient to obtain reliable and repeatable Hall voltages and coefficients.

Notes: Following insect sting anaphylaxis, twenty-five patients of over 500 evaluated, did not have detectable serum venom-specific IgE. Twenty-two were evaluated within 1 year of the reaction, fifteen within 6 months. Anaphylaxis occurred in six patients after their first sting exposure. The clinical features of the sting reaction were typical of the reaction occurring in insect-allergic patients with serum venom-specific IgE. Eleven of the twenty-five patients had negative venom skin tests. These observations suggest that a non-IgE mechanism may be responsible for a minority of insect sting reactions.

Notes: This communication provides a detailed examination of the morphology of thin films of CuInSe2 prepared by chemical spray pyrolysis on borosilicate glass, molybdenum-coated glass, and CdS substrates. The latter two are used in thin-film heterojunction solar cells of CuInSe2/CdS in the backwall and reverse backwall (RBW) configurations, respectively, and hence are of great technological interest. The pseudoepitaxial growth of CIS on CdS and its low deposition temperature (250 °C) which inhibits interdiffusion suggest that one should prepare CuInSe2/CdS solar cells in the RBW configuration.

Notes: This article describes the catastrophic failure of a liquid CO2 storage vessel and the chain of events that contributed to this incident. This incident happened in Procter & Gamble GmbH's citrus process in Worms, Germany. Three fatalities, over $20 million in property damage, and three month's lost production resulted.Initially less than one-fifth of the storage vessel was available for examination. The force of the explosion had propelled most of the vessel into the nearby Rhein River. The unavailability of the other parts of the vessel seriously hampered the incident investigation and prevented correct determination of the basic cause of the failure. Later recovery and inspection of additional parts of the tank allowed the investigation team to determine the correct basic cause. The results of the inspections conducted on other liquid CO2 vessels are covered. These inspections resulted in most of these vessels being removed from service. Other actions taken to prevent similar incidents include: Elimination of the use of carbon dioxide in many non-critical applications.Development and adoption of specific Company design requirements for liquid CO2 storage systems into standard Design Practices.
