Notes: The powder-in-tube method using an Ag sheath is applied to achieve high current capacity in the tapes of Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BPSCCO) with the high-Tc phase (Tc=110 K), by a combination process of cold working and sintering. Two kinds of the BPSCCO powder with and without Ag doping are used as the materials for tape fabrication. The morphology, structure, and critical current density Jc are investigated on the tapes by x-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, scanning electron microscope, magnetic susceptibility, and I-V curves. The optimum sintering conditions to obtain a maximum in the value of Jc at 77 K and 0 T are presented in the Ag-doped tapes and the nondoped ones. An improvement in the Jc vs B properties up to 1 T at 77 K is presented in the BPSCCO tape by Ag doping. The Ag doping causes neither change in the value of Tc (=110 K) nor decomposition of the high-Tc phase.

Notes: We report a 3-month-old male infant with marked folding of the skin, who manifested mental retardation and delayed growth at the age of 31 months. Histological examination of the folded skin disclosed smooth muscle hamartomatous changes. To our knowledge, this represents the third reported case of folded skin with an underlying smooth muscle hamartoma.

Notes: Summary Intraosseus venography and measurement of intramedullary pressure have been carried out in the metaphyses of 55 patients with unilateral Perthes' disease. Flow of the opaque medium into the diaphysis is the most important finding in intraosseous venography of the metaphysis. This was related to a rise of intramedullary pressure which indicates the presence of venous congestion within the metaphysis. While such congestion was seen both in the sclerotic stage and the segmentation stage, it was not related to the severity of Perthes' disease as judged by Catterall's [1] classification. Such venous congestion could be relevant to the pathogenesis of Perthes' disease, but there are probably different factors which determine the prognosis.

Notes: Summary We have assessed the value of adding low dose radiotherapy to preoperative chemotherapy in 20 patients with high grade malignant bone tumours. Histology of the resected specimens showed a considerable tumouricidal effect and a distinct capsule enclosing the extraosseous part of the tumour. There were no serious side effects.

Notes: Summary We report a patient with spontaneous recovery and recurrence of a jugular foramen syndrome secondary to an accessory nerve neuroma. He showed sudden onset of unilateral palsy of the ninth, tenth and eleventh cranial nerves in 1982. He recovered almost fully and in 1990 the palsies recurred. MRI revealed a small mass in the right jugular foramen. The tumour was resected via suboccipital craniectomy, and diagnosed as a neuroma of the eleventh cranial nerve.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the development of the blood vessels forming the secondary ossification center in the femoral heads of growing rats, we observed the specimens of the proximal femurs having vascular casts using both an optical and a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Histologically, the vascular invasion occurred from the lateral part of the cartilaginous epiphysis, prior to the appearance of the ossification center. The vascular casts were prominent within the cellular spaces consisting of a few hypertrophic chondrocytes. The SEM study suggested that the vascular buds had peculiar structures and invaded the cartilaginous epithysis by breaking through the cellular spaces. The blood vessels budded out from the arch of the lateral epiphyseal vessels toward the femoral heads. The sizes of the large-caliber vascular buds of about 50 μm in diameter were similar to those of the cellular spaces, and they penetrated into the epiphysis by repeated merging and branching. Many deep impressions were noted on the surface of the vascular buds, and the tips showed the peculiar shape similar to a suction cup.

Notes: Abstract Between November 1982 and August 1984 diving observations of two intertidal limpets' defensive behaviours in response to two predatory species were made near the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory of Kyoto University, in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, for over 800 h. The focus of the observations was a simple isolated rock, 0.9 m2 in area with an inclination of 75°. The pulmonate homing limpet Siphonaria sirius responded by fleeing from its home in response to the whelk Thais clavigera and by calmping tightly to its home scar in response to the starfish Coscinasterias acutispina. Both behaviours were successful for avoiding predation. After a whelk moved far away, limpets returned to their homes. The patellid limpet Cellana toreuma showed mantle folding behaviour or fled for an average distance of 8 cm vertically upwards in response to the whelk and for an average distance of 21 cm vertically upwards in response to the starfish. The amount of time predators spent foraging increased in the low intertidal zone relative to the mid and high zones, and most predator attacks were observed during the limpets' resting periods (submersion in late afternoon or nighttime). The upward directional flight displayed by C. toreuma was related to the upward orientation of the limpets' heads when they are in a resting position. Half of the limpets observed fleeing downward away from a starfish, a movement elicited by a downward attack, received a second attack. These limpets were preyed upon at the second encounter 67% of the time. The upward fleeing behaviour of C. toreuma resulted in the shifting of its resting site higher up the study site where fewer attacks occurred and where the mortality rate was at its lowest. It is suggested that the homing behaviour of S. sirius and the upward fleeing behaviour of C. toreuma are mechanisms by means of which interspecific competition between limpets is reduced and coexistence on a small rock surface is maintained.

Notes: Abstract As treatment for malignant tumors in the acetabular region of the pelvis, radiotherapy, mainly in the form of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT), was carried out in four patients. One had a malignant fibrous histiocytoma of bone and three had metastatic tumors from the stomach and lung. Over follow-up period, ranging from 3 to 46 months, satisfactory limb function was preserved in three patients; the fourth suffered from femoral nerve palsy as a complication of IORT. Cessation of growth was observed radiologically in all the tumors, and curative local control was proven histologically in two patients at autopsy.
