Notes: Abstract To define the effect of cyproterone acetate (CPA) on statural growth, 25 girls with idiopathic precocious puberty who had been treated with CPA were studied retrospectively. The final height SDS was −1.12±1.16 (mean±SD). The daily CPA dose was negatively related to the final height SDS. We divided our subjects into two groups according to the daily CPA dose [low dose, 84.9±15.4 mg/m2 (n=19) vs high dose, 135.8±17.1 mg/m2 (n=6)]. In the low dose group, the difference of the final height SDS minus height SDS for bone age at the initiation of CPA treatment was 0.55±1.16 and final height SDS was −0.82±1.05. The final height was not significantly different from the target height in the low dose group subjects whose target heights were obtained. Since the increment of height age to the increment of bone age during the treatment was significantly less in the group needing and treated with high dose CPA, high doses of CPA may reduce growth velocity more than its suppressive effect on bone maturation. These results suggest that CPA has an effect on statural growth in girls whose clinical symptoms can be controlled with a low dose of CPA, although they have not been compared with final height in untreated Japanese girls.

Notes: Abstract Three colonial variants of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, which formed transparent rough (TR)-, transparent smooth (TS)-, and opaque smooth (OS)-surfaced colonies, were described in relation to their fimbriation. TR- and TS-cells were adhesive to agar and glass surfaces but not the OS-cells. The examination by electron microscopy revealed that TR-cells were highly fimbriated but not TS- and OS-cells. Thus, TS-cells seemed to be an intermediate type. The fimbriae were isolated from TR-cells by suspending in 0.15 M ethanolamine-HCl buffer (pH 10.5) and purified by dissolving non-fimbrial components in 0.5% deoxycholate and 0.7% n-octyl-β-d-glucopyranoside. The relative molecular mass of the fimbrial subunit protein was 54 000.

Notes: Abstract The antigenic properties of the surface layer (S-layer) proteins of various Campylobacter rectus strains including 24 clinical isolates and the type strain ATCC 33238 were examined. S-layer proteins were extracted from whole cells by acid treatment according to the method of McCoy et al. (Infect. Immun. 11, 517–525, 1975). The acid extracts from 23 of the isolates and ATCC 33238 contained two major proteins with molecular masses of 130 kDa and 150 kDa, both of which were identified as subunits of the S-layer after comparison with the protein profiles of acid-treated (S-layer-deficient) cells. An S-layer protein from one isolate (CI-808) demonstrated a different molecular mass (160 kDa). Both the 150-kDa proteins of ATCC 33238 and isolate CI-306 and the 160-kDa protein of CI-808 were purified by ion-exchange chromatography in the presence of urea. In Ouchterlony immunodiffusion experiments with these purified proteins and rabbit antiserum raised to each purified protein, both common and strain-specific antigenic determinants were identified in the C. rectus S-layer proteins.

Notes: The contrast of electron microscope lattice images of a vanadium monosulphide with superstructures was dynamically calculated on the basis of the multislice method. Interactions of 80 waves were analysed. It was shown that the vacancy-rich vanadium sites were imaged as white spots not only at the very thin part but also at the thicker part inside the first equal-thickness contour, which appeared at the thickness of 60 Å. A non-stoichiometric vanadium monosulphide, VS1.155, quenched imperfectly from the preparation temperature at 1217 °C, was examined on the basis of the lattice image observation by a 100 kV high-resolution electron microscope. Orderings in the inter- as well as intralayers could be recognized directly from the arrangement of the white spots. Interpretable lattice images appeared exclusively inside the first equal-thickness contour. A mixture of some different types of images was observed in a crystal fragment; in some band-like regions the 4C-type superstructure was found with almost the same structure as Fe7S8. Each band extended parallel to the (001) plane with thickness of at most 50 Å and the orientation was in a twin relation to that of the adjoining one. The other regions showed less well-defined lattice images, although they gave the broad diffraction peaks ranging from the 4C- to 3C-type reflexions. In order to determine the phase relations at high temperatures the specimen was heated by focusing an electron beam on the portion slightly apart from the area under examination. The technique enabled us to observe only the heating effect. Upon heating, the 4C type first increased in volume, seen by the thickening of some bands. On further heating the 3C type increased in intensity on the diffraction pattern. The structure of the 3C type was estimated to be almost the same as Fe7Se8 except that the vacancy concentration fuctuated among the partially occupied vanadium layers.

Notes: An AlGaN/GaInN heterostructure has been fabricated by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. We observed room-temperature (RT) violet stimulated emission from an optically pumped double heterostructure (DH) using GaInN as an active layer. The peak wavelength of the stimulated emission at RT from Al0.17Ga0.83N/Ga0.91In0.09N DH is 402.5 nm, and the threshold of excitation power density is about 0.13 MW/cm2.

Notes: A major cell envelope protein was purified from the cell envelope fraction of Treponema denticola ATCC 35405 by ion exchange chromatography after extraction with Zwittergent 3–14. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electro-phoresis showed a relative molecular mass of 53 kDa for this protein with a pI of 6.3–6.8. Amino acid analysis revealed that this protein contained high proportions of hydrophobic amino acids (40.4%), and no cysteine could be detected. The N-terminus of the protein was blocked to Edman degradation. Rabbit antiserum raised against the purified 53 kDa protein reacted with the outer envelope of the T. denticola cell surface as confirmed by immunoelectron microscopy. This rabbit antiserum reacted with 4 of the 11 strains of treponemes tested in this study. Sera from 9 to 18 periodontitis patients reacted strongly with this 53 kDa cell envelope protein of T. denticola as determined by immunoblotting analysis.
