    Notes: Abstract From a bloom forming blue-green alga, Anabaenopsis raciborskii, spontaneous mutants, which had lost the ability to form gas vacuoles have been isolated; the mutant frequency was 4.8×10-3. The filaments of gas vacuole-less mutants settled at the bottom of flasks in liquid culture media unlike the parent alga. The growth and nitrogen fixation were comparatively poor in the mutants.

    Notes: Abstract Lysogens were isolated after confluent lysis of the blue-green algaNostoc muscorum by N-1 virus and characterised. The spontaneous liberation of active virus particles in lysogens was not lost after treating them with viricidal concentration of EDTA and virus titre obtained in their cultures was 〉5×103 PFU/ml. The virus adsorbed on the lysogens with a slower rate than on parent alga, although it followed the pattern of a first order reaction. The heat treatment (45°C for 14h) of the lysogens failed to induce lysis, whereas mitomycin C (1–2 μg/ml) was effective in inducing lysis.

    Notes: Abstract Ultraviolet (UV) sensitivity and photoreactivation of blue-green algae Cylindrospermum sp., Plectonema boryanum, spores of Fischerella muscicola and algal virus (cyanophage) LPP-1 were studied. The survival value after UV irradiation of filaments of Cylindrospermum sp. and Virus LPP-1 showed exponential trend and these were comparatively sensitive towards UV than F. muscicola and P. boryanum. Photoreactivation of UV-induced damage occurred in black, blue, green, yellow, red and white light in Cylindrospermum sp., however only black, blue and white light were capable of photorepair of UV-induced damage in P. boryanum, spores of F. muscicola and virus LPP-1 in infected host alga. Pre-exposure to yellow and black light did not show photoprotection. The non-heterocystous and nitrogen fixation-less mutants of Cylindrospermum sp. were not induced by UV and their spontaneous mutation frequency was not affected after photoreactivation. The short trichome mutants of P.boryanum were more resistant towards UV. The occurrence of photoreactivation of UV-induced killing in wide range of light in Cylindrospermum sp. is the first report in organisms.

    Notes: Abstract This study was an attempt to observe the effects of temperature on adsorption and one-step growth of the virus N-1 infecting the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum. Adsorption rate was found to be maximum at 40° C whereas no adsorption occurred at 10° C. The Q 10 value was about 2.03 and the energy of activation, Ea was 16.3 kcal/ mole for the adsorption process. The development cycle of the virus was temperature sensitive. With increase in temperature, a gradual increase in inhibition of virus yield i.e. 8.33% at 30° C, 35.3% at 35° C and complete inhibition at 40° C was observed. Out of 7 h latent period, the early 4 h were temperature sensitive and heat treatment had a reversible inhibitory effect on virus development. The temperature treatment did not affect the rise period but burst-size was reduced.

    Notes: Abstract The adsorption rate of the cyanovirus N-1 infecting the nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga Nostoc muscorum decreased with aging of algal cultures and the virus failed to adsorb to the dead host cells. The adsorption rate declined in saline magnesium chloride solution compared to that in algal growth medium. The addition of amino acids like L-tryptophan and L-phenylalanine failed to enhance the adsorption rate of the virus. Optimal pH of adsorption was 7.6 to 8.1.

    Notes: Male and female Carassius auratus were exposed to safe (SC; 0.01 ppm) and sublethal (SL; 0·1 ppm) concentrations of an organochlorine pesticide γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH) for 4 weeks during the pre-spawning phase (June) of the annual reproductive cycle. Gonadosomatic index and gonadotropin levels were significantly lower after exposure to both γ-HCH concentrations than in control fish. After 4 weeks exposure, gonadal tissue from control, SC and SL exposed fish was incubated with carp hypophyseal homogenate (chh). The chh stimulated production of testosterone, 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20βP), 11-deoxycortisol, and 11-ketotesterone (11-KT) was estimated in the unconjugated (free) and conjugated (glucuronide) fractions by radioimmunoassay. In both sexes, testosterone production was greatly decreased in γ-HCH exposed fish compared to controls. 17,20βP production was low in all fish and was unaffected by γ-HCH. Free 11-deoxycortisol production by testicular fragments was higher in SL and SC compared with controls, while conjugated 11-deoxycortisol was increased only higher in the SL. In ovarian fragments from exposed fish, free 11-deoxycortisol decreased while glucuronide concentrations increased compared with controls. 11-KT production was significantly decreased in testicular fragments of exposed fish. The results indicate that γ-HCH inhibits gonadal recrudescence by decreasing both gonadotropin secretion and its potential for stimulation of steroidogenesis.

    Notes: Circannual variation in plasma levels of testosterone (T), oestradiol-17β(E2) and 17α-hydroxy-progesterone (17α-OHPg) were measured in female, Heteropneustes fossilis. T and E2 levels increased during the preparatory phase, reached their peak in the early prespawning phase and fell during the late prespawning phase to reach their lowest levels post-spawning. 17a-OHPg was detected from the late preparatory to the late spawning phase showing its peak during the early spawning phase. The levels of free fatty acids (FFA), monoglycerides (MG), diglycerides (DG), triglycerides (TG), phospholipids (PL), free cholesterol (CF)and esterified cholesterol (CE) were estimated in liver, plasma and ovaries. The preparatory phase showed hepatic lipogenic activity while during the prespawning phase TG lipolysis was increased by FFA. Ovarian CF was depleted by enhancing plasma E, levels during the prespawning phase. The gonadosomatic index reached its peak during spawning.

    Notes: The effect of the addition of a single dose of 7 μg.kg−1 of alfentanil to a propofol/enflurane anaesthetic on the quality of anaesthesia and recovery was assessed. A total of 53 ASA grade 1 or 2 patients who underwent daycase dental surgery were allocated randomly to receive either alfentanil or saline. The study was blinded so that neither the anaesthetist nor the assessor was aware of which solution had been given. Patients in the alfentanil group took signficantly longer to recommence spontaneous ventilation (p = 0.035). Both techniques provided good quality of anaesthesia. Postoperative morbidity was common (45% of patients), but there was no difference between the groups. The rate of recovery was similar in the two groups and no patient required hospital admission after the final assessment at 3 h. Drowsiness was only mild to moderate in both groups at 24 h. A single dose of alfentanil can be administered safely as part of a daycase anaesthetic without increasing morbidity, although there appears to be little advantage in doing so.

    Notes: A significant reflex fall in mean arterial blood pressure from baseline values was observed during extra-ocular muscle traction in rabbits. This effect could be abolished only by retrobulbar block (afferent pathway block) and not by vagotomy, intravenous atropine or glvcopyrronium, suggesting that it is distinct from, and independent of, the oculocardiac reflex. We suggest that these reflex changes in blood pressure be known as the ‘oculodepressor reflex’.
