    Notes: Abstract A 480-square-mile region within Will County, in northeastern Illinois, was used as a test region for the development of a methodology to map the sensitivity of aquifers to contamination. An aquifer sensitivity model was developed using a geographic information system (GIS) to overlay and combine several data layers. The components used for our model are: (1) depth to sand and gravel or bedrock, (2) thickness of the uppermost sand and gravel aquifer, (3) glacial drift thickness, and (4) bedrock geology. The model is an improvement over many previous aquifer sensitivity models because it combines specific information on depth to the uppermost aquifer with information on the thickness of the uppermost sand and gravel aquifer. This county-wide model results in an aquifer sensitivity map that can be a useful tool for making land-use planning decisions regarding aquifer protection and management of groundwater resources.

    Notes: The viscosities η of carbon dioxide and xenon have been measured near their critical points and the critical exponent y characterizing the asymptotic divergence, η∼||T−Tc||−y, has been determined. Both fluids yielded exponents in the range y=0.041±0.001 and thus also fell in the range y=0.042±0.002 from our earlier study of four binary liquids. This agreement between experiments is the first evidence that pure fluids and binary liquids are in the same dynamic universality class. A recent theoretical value for y is 0.032. The 30% discrepancy is much greater than the combined errors from experiment and theory. The torsion oscillator viscometer operated at low frequency and low shear rate to avoid systematic errors caused by critical slowing down. Far from Tc the analysis accounted for the crossover from critical to noncritical temperature dependence, where the latter was obtained from previously published correlations. Corrections for gravitational stratification were included close to Tc.

    Notes: Eighty basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) in 21 patients, 10 lesions of Bowen's disease in three patients, and four lesions of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma in two patients, were treated with photodynamic laser therapy (PDT), using topical application of the haem precursor δ-amino levulinic acid (ALA). The diagnoses were confirmed histologically prior to treatment. Fifty-five of the BCCs were superficial lesions, and 25 were nodular. Of the 80 BCCs, 39 (49%) were located on the trunk, 36 (45%) on the head and neck region, four (15%) on the leg and one on the arm. The two principal locations of the 10 Bowen's disease lesions were the leg (50%) and the trunk (40%). The T-cell lymphoma lesions were located on the shoulder and on the arm. A water-in-oil based cream containing 20% ALA was applied to the lesions, with a margin of about 10–20 mm beyond the visible tumour border, 4–6 h before the laser procedure. During this period of time the highly fluorescent and photodynamically active substance protoporphyrin IX (Pp IX) is synthesized via the haem cycle. Laser-induced fluorescence (LJF) was used for real-time monitoring of the Pp IX distribution in the tumour and in the normal surrounding skin, before and after treatment in all patients. Before laser treatment the Pp IX distribution demonstrated by LJF showed a demarcation between tumour and normal skin of about 15:1 for BCC and Bowen's disease, and 5:1 for T-cell lymphomas. Laser light from a pulsed frequency- doubled Nd: YAG laser pumping a dye laser with light emission at 630 nm was used for the therapy. The power density in the irradiation was kept below 110 mW/cm2, in order to avoid hyperthermal effects. A total energy of 60 J/cm2 was delivered for 10–20 min, depending on the tumour size. A complete response rate of 100% in superficial BCCs and 64% in nodular BCCs occurred after a single laser treatment, and a response rate of 100% was achieved after one additional treatment in the nodular BCCs. In the Bowen's disease lesions a complete response of 90% was obtained with a single treatment. Two of the four T-cell lymphomas resolved completely. The follow-up time was between 6 and 14 months.

    Notes: In Lake Constance from September 1986 to May 1988 13 adult lake dwelling brown trout (Sulmo trutta L.) were tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and tracked almost continuously for up to 13 days. Two behaviour types were observed: (a) random movement in locally restricted areas and (b) excursions of up to 40 km distance. Swimming activity during the day was significantly higher than at night in most experiments. In summer swimming depth ranged between 8 and 16 m, and in winter between 0 and 3m. The preferred water temperature was about 14°C in the thermally stratified waterbody. During the experiments mean swimming speed ranged between 0.3 km h−1 (0.1 bodylengths s−1) and 0.9 km h−1 (0.6 bodylengths s−1).

    Notes: Abstract Cultured rat hippocampal neurons with short processes were investigated using the whole cell voltage clamp under conditions appropriate for isolating Na+ currents. After incubation of the neuron culture for a period of 15–30 min in 1 mM sodium valproate, several parameters of the Na+ current were changed. The peak Na+ conductance g p, measured using hyperpolarizing prepulses, was reduced by valproate in a voltage-dependent manner. In the membrane voltage range from -30 to +20 mV, this reduction showed a linear dependence on voltage, increasing from about zero to approximately 30% of g p, the maximum peak Na+ conductance of the neuron. At the holding voltage of -70 mV, the inactivation parameter h t8 decreased from 0.88 in the control to 0.64 in the valproate solution. This reduction originated mainly from a 10 mV shift in the sigmoid relation between h t8 and membrane voltage along the voltage axis to hyperpolarizing potentials. The decay of the maximum peak Na+ current (inactivation) could be fitted by a biexponential function. Time constants of the fast and slow component at -20 mV decreased in valproate by about 50%. Valproate also retarded the recovery from inactivation, as determined at the holding voltage. The sigmoid recovery from inactivation could reasonably be described by an exponential function with time constant τ r and delay time Δt. Both τ r and At increased more than 200% in valproate. Our results indicate that valproate affected the Na+ current in hippocampal neurons in a way that contributed to a considerable depression of Na+ reactivation. This explains the frequency-dependent inhibition of action potentials as observed in mammalian central nervous tissue and may be the principal action of the anticonvulsant.
