    Notes: We present details of an experimental method to measure the field modulated surface resistance (dRs/dH) of superconducting films accurately, which enables both field and temperature sweep experiments and is particularly useful for low-field or near Tc measurements. The complex surface impedance Zs(H,T)=Rs(H,T)+iXs(H,T) can also be simultaneously measured. This technique utilizes specially built circuitry to lock the microwave source to the cavity and keep the input power of the cavity constant, even as the resonant frequency or Q value of the cavity changes with changing temperature or applied field. With the above circuitry, we were able to measure (dRs/dH) directly rather than (dP/dH) as in some modulated microwave absorption measurements. With the high accuracy offered by the modulation technique and the high Q of the cavity, important information about the magnetic-field response of superconducting films, such as dynamics of vortices and low-field properties of weak links can be obtained. The technique can also be employed to measure any possible spontaneously induced internal fields in two-dimensional high-Tc superconductors.

    Notes: By observing the luminescence micrographic images and measuring the decay behaviors of photoluminescence spectra, it is found that the blue light-emitting porous silicon obtained by boiling water treatment behaves very similarly to the red light-emitting sample. It is thus believed that the blue light emission is originated from the porous silicon skeleton rather than impurity contaminations. The achievement of blue light emission requires the proper control of the size of the Si nanostructures, effective passivation of the internal surfaces of porous silicon layer, and keeping a mechanically strong Si skeleton. A theoretical estimation and the experiments show that the simultaneous fulfillment of these conditions is quite critical, which explains the poor reproducibility of achieving blue emission experimentally.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we investigate the effect of warning announcements on the price behaviour of stocks. We also study the effects of various corrective treatments (trading halts, call trading and 100% payment/delivery with order) on the performance of stocks in the Taiwan stock market. It is found that warning announcements serve to improve the performance of stocks, except in the case of consecutive warnings. Generally speaking, the corrective measures taken after the consecutive warnings are able to reduce the volatility, the abnormal returns and the excess liquidity of the stocks.

    Notes: The mechanical properties of isotactic polypropylene can be enhanced in one direction by a combination of rolling and drawing in a rolling mill. The longitudinal strength and modulus of the oriented polypropylene (OPP) increases with an increase in draw ratio; however, the transverse properties remain relatively unchanged. In this study, multidirectional OPP laminates [with (0)2, (0/90)s and (0/±45)s lay-ups] were made to obtain sheet materials with improved properties in more than one direction in the plane. A hot-plate welding technique was used to produce these translucent and recyclable laminates. The in-plane properties of the laminates were successfully predicted with classical laminate theory (CLT), which is commonly used to predict the properties of fiber reinforced materials. These laminates can be quasi-isotropic and were found to have improved modulus [up to 6 GPa for (0/90)s laminates] and strength [up to 150 MPa for (0/90)s laminates] as well as exceptionally good impact toughness.
