Notes: In1−xGaxSb1−yBiy (0〈x≤0.21, 0〈y≤0.005) quaternary bulk single crystals were grown on InSb seed crystals using a rotary Bridgman method. In order to investigate the quality of these crystals, various kinds of measurements were carried out, such as optical microscope, x-ray topograph, four-crystal x-ray diffractometry, electron-probe microanalysis, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and secondary-ion-mass spectroscopy. All grown crystals were 10 mm in diameter and more than 10 mm in length. This indicates that the rotary Bridgman method was useful to grow quaternary bulk single crystals. Owing to segregation, the compositional ratio of Bi (y) increased and that of Ga (x) decreased as crystals grew. During growth of InGaSbBi, both Ga and Bi diffused into the InSb seed and there appeared domains of InBi. For comparison, InSb1−yBiy (0〈y≤0.05) and In1−xGaxSb (0〈x≤0.16) were grown on InSb. It turned out that Bi did not diffuse into InSb without Ga, but Ga diffused without Bi. The incorporation of Ga produced the excess In and as a result InBi domains were formed.

Notes: A new type of magnetoresistance characterized by its anomalous field dependence has been found in artificially multilayered ferrimagnets of Fe/Gd and of modified double-structured {Fe/Gd}/{Fe/Gd}. The anomaly is attributed to the spin-flop which remarkably takes place at fields less than 1 kOe even at room temperature and is particularly pronounced in the double-structured multilayers. In coincidence with the spin-flop, the magnetoresistance shows an up and down change against field.

Notes: Abstract Electrical conductivity of carbon black (CB) filled polymer blends which are incompatible with each other was studied as a function of the polymer's blend ratio. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis shows that CB distributes unevenly in each component of a polymer blend. TEM photographs of phase structure of solvent extracted HDPE/PMMA blend and solvent extraction experiments of PMMA/PP blend detect the blend ratio at which the structural continuity of filler rich phase is formed. The electrical conductivity of polymer blends is found to be determined by two factors. One is the concentration of CB in the filler rich phase and the other is the structural continuity of this phase. This double percolation affects the conductivity of conductive particle filled polymer blends.

Notes: Abstract Powder catalysts were prepared by immersion of amorphous Ni-40Zr and Ni-40Ti alloys containing a few at % of platinum group elements in HF solution. This treatment led to preferential dissolution of the valve metal and nickel with a consequent formation of microcrystalline alloy powders consisting of concentrated platinum group elements and some nickel and valve metal. Porous gas-diffusion electrodes prepared by using these alloy catalyst powders were employed for electrochemical reduction of oxygen and oxidation of hydrogen in 1 M H2SO4 at 25°C. The activity of the electrodes prepared from the amorphous alloys containing Pt−Ru, Pt−Rh, Pt and Pd for oxygen reduction was considerably higher than that of the platinum black electrode. Oxidation of hydrogen occurred readily close to the equilibrium potential. Amorphous alloy electrodes containing Pt−Ru, Pt−Rh and Pt were more active than the platinum black electrode for the hydrogen oxidation.

Notes: Abstract The proton irradiation control system was developed for cancer radiotherapy at the Proton Medical Research Center, with the extension of a beam line connected to a synchrotron at the High Energy Physics Laboratory. The initial energy of the 500 MeV proton beam supplied by the accelerator is degraded down to 243 MeV after passing through a graphited rod. In the control system, a proton beam is scattered to form a large field, its Bragg peak width is spread out, and its energy is degraded to the optimum value with a range covering tumour depth. The characteristics of the devices required for these procedures have been investigated from the viewpoint of the relationship between dose rate and field flatness, taking the setting-up geometry of these devices into consideration.
