Notes: Measurements of the reversible transverse susceptibility (RTS) were performed on BaFe12−x−yCoxTiyO19 single crystals with doping concentrations x≈y≤0.77 under different angles cursive-theta0 between the easy axis and applied field. For intermediate doping concentrations the occurrence of a peak in the RTS curve for cursive-theta0=90° indicates that the domain walls are not free to move. This assumption is confirmed further by the large component of the RTS being out of phase with respect to the excitation field HE. The phase angle of the initial susceptibility measured parallel to the easy axis becomes maximum at a characteristic excitation field value HE,C and a relaxation of the susceptibility is observed if HE steps from zero to a value larger than HE,C. Using the RTS curve for cursive-theta0=0 and assuming that the peak of the RTS is located at the same field strength as if the particle were single domain, the first-order anisotropy field HA=2K1/(μ0Ms) and the second-order anisotropy constant K2 can be determined. The values found this way are compared to results from magnetization-curve analysis and from other authors.

Notes: Transverse susceptibility (TS) and ferromagnetic resonance absorption (FMR) are measured on commercially available metal-evaporated video tape manufactured by the continuous varying incidence method, so that the columns are inclined at an angle cursive-thetaint with respect to the recording direction. Due to the demagnetization of the tape the magnetization vector is at an extrinsic inclination angle cursive-thetaext〈cursive-thetaint with respect to the recording direction, which is determined to be 24° by analyzing angular remanence curves. The results of TS and FMR measurements on the dependence of the angle cursive-thetaN between applied field and tape normal are symmetrical to cursive-thetaN=cursive-thetaext. In-plane TS measurements parallel and perpendicular to the recording direction lead to HA=440 kA/m and an intrinsic inclination angle cursive-thetaint=44°. Using these values, measured and calculated resonance field values Hres are in good agreement except for 0°〈cursive-thetaN〈50°. The analysis of Hres in the vicinity of cursive-thetaN=24° leads to HA=640 kA/m and cursive-thetaint=37°. Thus, Stoner–Wohlfarth behavior with lower anisotropy field strength as determined perpendicular to the preferential axis of magnetization is suggested. In contrast to TS measurements, no results can be found that fit the resonance field value both parallel and perpendicular to the film normal.

Notes: A pump and probe beam technique is demonstrated in conjunction with the optical-beam-induced current method of laser scanning microscopy which allows one to measure the dynamics of internal signals in integrated circuits. The time resolution of the measurement is limited only by the duration of the applied light pulses as well as the integrated circuit (IC) itself. The method is based on the generation of electrical pulses inside the IC switching a turned-off metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) transistor optically with short light pulses. The propagation of the electrical pulse in a chain of n-MOS inverters is studied on a subnanosecond time scale. A simple approach to the mechanisms of the generation of the optical-beam-induced current as well as the optical switching of MOS transistors is given. Optimum conditions for the laser beam power for both the excitation and the probe beam are discussed. The generation of the optical-beam-induced current in dependence on the position of the illuminating laser beam is considered.

Notes: We investigated the magnetic behavior of grain-oriented steel sheet under various elliptical field conditions. The measurements show an additional anisotropy of the material properties depending on the direction of the elliptic rotation. We ascribe these phenomena to the different symmetries of the crystal anisotropy energy and of the ellipsoidal fields.

Notes: Ba and Sr ferrites are prepared by sol-gel technique with different Fe/Ba(Sr) ratios in the starting materials. Magnetization, coercive, and anisotropy field strength are determined depending on the heat treatment of the gel and the iron/barium(strontium) ratio in the starting material. A two-step heat treatment is used to prepare single-domain powders with high magnetization. These powders prepared by sol-gel technique show single-domain behavior with specific magnetization σS=649 A cm2/g and coercive field strength HcM=402 kA/m in the case of Ba ferrite and σS=695 A cm2/g and HcM=416 kA/m for Sr the ferrite. Al-substituted ferrites with high anisotropy field strengths are prepared additionally. Ferromagnetic resonance absorption is used to determine the anisotropy field strength and to investigate the formation process of the hexaferrite phase during the heat treatment. The beginning of hexaferrite formation occurs at annealing temperatures below 700 °C.

Notes: Abstract From 1983 to 1990, 82 knee arthroscopies (8.2%) carried out in our patients found nothing pathological. Sixty-four percent of these patients were active in sports, but trauma was noted in 32% of the cases only. Football and other ball games, skiing, and track and field athletics were the main causes. Twenty-six percent of the patients had undergone previous surgery in the affected knee. At a mean of 4.6 years postoperatively, clinical and radiological re-assessment was conducted so as to compare our pre- and intraoperative findings with the further course of events. We found that 48.2% of the patients were symptom-free after the diagnostic arthroscopy, 37.5% had persistent discomfort and 14.3% had a recurrence of discomfort after 6 months to 2 years. The objective measurement score (Zarins Rowe score), at 47.5 out of 50 points, was better than the subjective score, at 40 out of 50 points. Our diagnoses had to be changed retrospectively: meniscal lesions were diagnosed too frequently, while chondropathia patellae and instability were often missed. Additionally, complaints could be related to abnormal axis, limited range of motion of the hip or knee, leg length inequality and hypermobility. Being unable to verify a presumed intra-articular lesion arthroscopically is frustrating for both doctor and patient. Our data suggest that meniscal signs should be looked at more critically and emphasise the need for a complete evaluation of the whole locomotor system.
