    Notes: Abstract Well-crystallized ultrafine ZnFe2O4 particles of several nanometers in size have been prepared by the coprecipitation method, and their particle morphology and magnetic properties, especially at low temperatures, examined. Room-temperature X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, magnetization measurements at various temperatures from 300 K to 4.2 K, and Mössbauer spectroscopy at various temperatures from 300 K to 4.2 K, and at 4.2 K with a longitudinal magnetic field of 16.4 kOe applied have been employed. The formation of short-range and long-range magnetic order in small ZnFe2O4 particles above and below approximately 30 K is discussed. Below 30 K, the appearance of spontaneous magnetization and its hysteretic property is confirmed for small ZnFe2O4 particles.

    Notes: Abstract The morphology of osteoclasts, primary cells that resorb bone, is well documented; however, the precise details of their terminal differentiation remains obscure. To date, the only morphological criterion for identifying activated functional osteoclasts has been the presence of ruffled borders. We have developed a rat bone marrow culture system in which osteoclast-like cells formed. These cells fulfilled most of the criteria of osteoclasts, and when they were reseeded on calcified tissue, formed numerous resorption lacunae in vitro. To find an immunological marker for functional osteoclasts, we have used these cells in a functional state as antigens for the preparation of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) that reacted with rat osteoclasts; we obtained mAb Ch1 and Ch2. Interestingly, these mAbs reacted with the marginal portion of authentic osteoclasts, where they attached to the bone surface on frozen sections. The reactivity of Ch1 to rat osteoclasts was more restricted than that of Ch2: Ch1 reacted with few tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive cells on a culture plate. These TRAP-positive cells (including mono- and multinucleated cells) were, however, converted to Ch1-positive cells when they were reseeded on calcified tissues. These findings suggested that the antigen recognized by the Ch1 antibody was induced by some factors of matrix proteins released from calcified tissues.

    Notes: Abstract The characteristics of a monoclonal antibody produced against osteoclast-like multinucleated cells (MNCs) formed in rat bone marrow cultures were examined immunohistochemically and biochemically. The in vitro immunization was performed using as immunogen the MNCs from rat bone marrow cell culture, which revealed many characteristics of osteoclasts. After screening and cloning of hybridomas, the monoclonal antibody HOK 1 was obtained. This antibody reacted weakly with stromal cells and intensely with both MNCs and their putative migratory traces on culture dishes. Immunofluorescent examination of paraffin sections revealed intense reactivity on the epithelium of the choroid plexus, the ileum and the proximal-convoluted tubules of the kidney, and also on bone cells such as osteocytes, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts. Western blotting using purified rat osteopontin verified that the antigen recognized by HOK 1 was osteopontin. Positive HOK 1 immunoreactivity was further observed in the resorption lacunae formed by a culture of MNCs on human tooth slices and on the surface of osteoclasts. The present data suggested that osteopontin is preferentially present on the resorption lacunae in resorbing calcified matrices and that osteoclasts under a specific state might trap this protein on their cell surface.

    Notes: Abstract Objective Brain reanimation after prolonged ischemia is limited by post-ischemic reperfusion deficits (no-reflow phenomenon). The present study was undertaken to establish whether after 30 min cardiac arrest extracorporeal circulation is able to restore brain reperfusion and to promote functional and metabolic recovery. Design Adult normothermic cats were submitted to 30 min cardiac arrest by KCl-induced cardioplegia. Resuscitation was carried out by extracorporeal circulation (ECC) until spontaneous heart function returned. The quality of brain recovery was assessed 3 h later by electrophysiological recording and by imaging of the regional distribution of brain energy metabolites. Results In 6 of 10 cats cardiac sinus rhythm returned after 32±15 min. In the other 4 cats cardiac function did not return or only intermittently returned during the 3 h observation period. Cerebral blood flow measured by laser Doppler flowmetry returned to 102%±40% of control immediately after the beginning of resuscitation but then gradually declined to 43%±32% after 3 h despite normotensive perfusion. In all cats pupils started to constrict within less than 5 min of recirculation but in 2 animals they secondarily dilated 1.5 and 2 h later, respectively. Spontaneous EEG activity reappeared in 4 of the 6 successfully resuscitated cats after 111±40 min but failed to recover in the others. Bioluminescent imaging of ATP after 3 h recirculation revealed near-complete depletion throughout the brain in all 4 cats without cardiac recovery. Of the 6 successfully resuscitated cats 5 exhibited patchy areas of low ATP, glucose and pH in 22%–92% of the cross sectional area of brain; in one cat recovery of energy metabolism and acid-base homoiostasis was homogenous without any focal deficits. The cross sectional area of ATP recovery correlated directly with CBF and hematocrit and inversely with the plasma lactate level. Conclusions This study demonstrates for the first time that ECC is able to restore electrophysiological and metabolic brain function after cardiac arrest of as long as 30 min, but recovery is heavily restricted by delayed postischemic disturbances of recirculation. Progress in cardiac resuscitation by ECC requires substantial improvement in the efficiency of cerebrovascular reperfusion.

    Notes: Abstract The nucleus of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 5548 was very faint and the intensity of the broad emission component of Hβ was unusually low in March–April and in July 1990. Similar stages was found only twice in this decade, in 1979 and 1981, prior to the present one. The very broad components of He I and He II were not detected in 1990. The blueward edge of the broad component of Hβ was much steeper than the redward one in 1990, in contrast to the profiles with the opposite asymmetry in the years 1979–1981. This result suggests that a main part of the broad component blueshifted in the recent several years. An upper limit of the displacement of the broad component of Hβ occurred during the years from 1984 to 1990 was estimated to be about - 2000 km s−1. If this variation of the radial velocity was due to an orbital motion of the exciting source in a binary system, the total mass of the system is about ≤ 6 × 106 M ⊙. The luminosity of the nucleus is the same order of the Eddington limit of this total mass.

    Notes: Epoxy-terminated poly(aryl ether sulfone)s (PSE) were prepared by the reaction of epichlorohydrin with hydroxyethyl-terminated polysulfones, which were synthesized from chloro-terminated polysulfones (PSC) and diethanolamine. Both PSE and PSC were used as modifiers for toughening of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether epoxy resin cured with p,p′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone. The mechanical, thermal, and dynamic viscoelastic properties of the modified resins were examined and compared to the parent epoxy resin. The effectiveness of PSC was larger than that of PSE. The fracture toughness, KIC, for the modified resin increased 45% at slight expense of its mechanical properties on 20 wt % addition of PSC (Mw 5300). These results were discussed in terms of the morphological and dynamic viscoelastic behaviors of the modified epoxy resin system.
