    Notes: The traveltime perturbation equations for the quasi-compressional and the two quasi-shear waves propagating in a factorized anisotropic inhomogeneous (FAI) media are derived. The concept of FAI media simplifies considerably these equations. In the FAI medium, the density normalized elastic parameters aijkl(Xi) can be described by the relation aijkl(Xi) =f2(xi)Aijkl, where Aijkl are constants, independent of coordinates xi and f2(xi) is a continuous smooth function of xi. The types of anisotropy (Aijkl) and inhomogeneity [f(xi)] are not restricted. The traveltime perturbations of individual seismic body waves (qP, qS1 and qS2) propagating in the FAI medium depend, of course, both on the structural pertubations [δf2(xi)] and on the anisotropy perturbations (δAijkl), but both these effects are fully separated. The perturbation equations for the time delay between the two qS-waves propagating in the FAI medium are simplified even more. If the unperturbed (background) medium is isotropic, the perturbation of the time delay does not depend on the structural perturbations (δf2(xi) at all. This striking result, valid of course only in the framework of first-order perturbation theory, will simplify considerably the interpretation of the time delay between the two split qS-waves in inhomogeneous anisotropic media. Numerical examples are presented.

    Notes: Pericardial effusions are common following cardiac surgery; uncommonly they are large in size and may cause tamponade, either in the early or late postoperative period. Such effusions causing tamponade may be circumcardiac, but are frequently loculated, in which case one or more cardiac chambers is selectively compressed. Fortunately, echocardiography is capable of imaging not only the presence, location, and size of the pericardial effusion, but also indicating the presence of tamponade. Constrictive pericarditis resulting from cardiac surgery is being recognized with increasing frequency and has been associated with various echocar-diographic abnormalities. This review also discusses certain other pericardial complications of cardiac surgery including supraventricular arrhythmias, chylopericardium, and posttransplant problems.

    Notes: Summary One hundred thirteen patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass were randomly assigned to receive either bovine or porcine heparin. Heparin was infused at 4.5 mg/kg during bypass and administered at the lesser of 70 units/kg or 5000 units/dose at 12-hour intervals postoperatively. Platelet counts decreased to 45% of preoperative levels during the first 3 days postoperatively (porcine, 44±13%, n =50; bovine, 46±15%), but returned to preoperative levels by the seventh postoperative day. The average blood loss in the porcine heparin group significantly exceeded that of the bovine heparin group (porcine, 1350.7±727.8 ml; bovine, 1059.6±381.0 ml; p〈.01). Consequently, the platelet transfusion requirement was greater in the porcine heparin group (porcine, 1.7±3.9 units; bovine, 0.5±1.7 units; p〈.05); however, blood and blood component (with the exception of platelets) administration was not significantly different between the two groups. The four patients taking anticoagulants or antiinflammatory agents in the porcine group required a mean of 8.5 units of red blood cells (RBC) plus supplemental platelets. The seven such patients in the bovine group received a mean of 3.0 units of RBC and no platelets. Thus, the use of porcine heparin resulted in a generalized increase in postoperative bleeding with increased management problems in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass.

    Notes: Abstract It has been shown that in aqueous solution histone H1 and H5 C-terminal fragments and peptide hormones β-endorphin and ACTH adopt preferably the left-handed helical conformation of the poly-l-proline II type. Scanning microcalorimetry and circular dichroism have been used to show that the linear temperature dependence of CD maximum amplitude and partial heat capacity value are broken in the temperature interval between 50 and 60°C, after which [C] p reaches the constant level. It was proposed to be due to noncooperative disordering of the conformation caused by the destruction of the polypeptide hydration shell.

    Notes: Abstract Elevation of circulating phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity is associated with sepsis and septic shock. Elevated levels of PLA2 activity also are seen in association with chronic inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. The relationship between these phospholipases is unclear. We have developed a highly specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) capable of measuring human synovial PLA2 in plasma, using monoclonal antibodies raised to recombinant synovial PLA2. This ELISA has been used to quantitate circulating PLA2 levels in patients clinically diagnosed with sepsis. These elevated levels positively correlated with the elevation seen in plasma PLA2 enzyme activity. The antibodies also have been used to purify immunoreactive PLA2 from plasma of patients with sepsis, thus enabling characterization of the purified protein by amino-terminal sequence analysis. We conclude from this study that the increase in PLA2 activity seen in association with sepsis and septic shock results from a dramatic elevation in levels of a circulating PLA2 enzyme. This inflammatory PLA2 is indistinguishable, both immunologically and chemically, from that associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Therapeutic agents directed towards inhibition of this inflammatory PLA2 enzyme may have utility in the treatment of both chronic and acute inflammatory disease.

A view was supported that nonrandom distribution of codons with different usage frequencies in mRNA may determine the messenger's translation kinetics. Regions of reduced translation of α- and β-globin polypeptide chains were localized, and the cotranslational protein-folding model suggested previously was substantiated. An active conjunction of synthesis and folding of proteins was proposed as one of the main destinations of a translation nonuniformity.

    Notes: Abstract An extension of the plasma area method of Chiou to the evaluation of accumulation profiles during quasiuni-form multiple dosing regimens (i.e., regimens with varying doses and/or dosing intervals within a certain time period which are repeated in the successive periods throughout the administration course) is presented. The derivations show, that the equations for the accumulation and steady state curves during quasi-uniform multiple dosing are similar or identical to these for the uniform multiple dosing case, if the constant time interval in the latter is replaced by the constant time period in the former. The equations derived can be used for rapid estimation of the time, required to reach a prespecified fraction of quasi steady state plasma level during quasi-uniform multiple dosing.

    Notes: Polymethylmethacrylate bone cement, containing either no added antibiotic, 0.5 g of Vancomycin, 1.0 g of Vancomycin, or 1.0 g of Tobramycin, was mixed either in air or a vacuum chamber. Following storage in a water bath at 37°C for 48 h, the specimens were tested in four-point bending. The porosity of the specimens was assessed radiographically, and their antibacterial activity was monitored for 21 days. The bending strength of the vacuum mixed specimens containing no antibiotic was 40% greater than that of similar air-mixed specimens. However, there were no significant differences in the bending strength of either the air-or vacuum-mixed specimens when any of the antibiotic dosages were added. The bending modulus of the vacuum-mixed specimens, containing no antibiotic, was significantly greater than the moduli of all the other specimen groups which did not differ from each other. Vacuum mixing reduced the apparent porosity of the specimens fivefold, and while the addition of antibiotic did not effect porosity of the air-mixed specimens, that of the vacuum-mixed specimens was doubled. Although initial rapid decreases were seen, leaching of antibiotic from the cement and antibacterial activity continued through the 21-day monitoring period.
