    Notes: Abstract To clarify the mechanism of plasma nitriding, we examined the optical microstructure, the hardness, the precipitation, and the concentration of dissolved nitrogen in Fe-18Cr-9Ni nitrided using plasma in the range of 723–823 K. Compared with ammonia-gas nitriding, the features of plasma nitriding are the formation of small chromium-nitride precipitates (CrN), the absence of an externally nitrided layer, the high concentration of dissolved nitrogen, and the high hardness (HV=1200). The diffusion coefficient of nitrogen in the present alloy was determined using the growth rate of the internally nitrided layer, based on calculations used in internal oxidation. Plasma- and gas-nitriding were also compared with respect to the growth rate of the nitrided layer.

    Notes: Abstract Rabbit antisera were raised against β-(1→6)-galactotetraose coupled to bovine serum albumin (Gal4-BSA). The antisera reacted with arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs) isolated from seeds, roots, or leaves of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) as revealed by immunodiffusion analysis. Extensive removal of α-l-arabinofuranosyl residues from these AGPs enhanced the formation of precipitin with the antisera. The antisera did not react with such other polysaccharides as soybean arabinan-4-galactan, β-(1→4)-galactan, and β-(1→3)-galactan, indicating their high specificity toward the consecutive β-(1→6)-galactosyl side chains of AGPs. The antibodies were purified by affinity chromatography on a column of immobilized β-(1→6)-galactotetraose as ligand. The specificity of the antibodies toward consecutive (1→6)-linked β-galactosyl residues was confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for hapten inhibition against Gal4-BSA as antigen, which revealed that β-(1→6)-galactotriose and-tetraose were potent inhibitors, while β-(1→3)-or β-(1→4)-galactobioses and -trioses were essentially unreactive. Electron-microscopic observation of immunogold-stained tissues demonstrated that AGPs were localized in the middle lamella as well as at the plasma membrane of primary roots of radish. Agglutination of protoplasts prepared from cotyledons occurred with the antibodies, supporting the evidence for localization of AGPs in the plasma membrane. The antibody-mediated agglutination was inhibited by addition of AGPs or β-(1→6)-galactotetraose.

    Notes: Summary Twenty-four patients with acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss (ALHL) were examined using electrocochleography. The negative summating potential (SP) amplitude and the summating potential/action potential (AP) ratio were significantly greater in the ALHL patients than in normals. The SP/AP ratio was smaller in the ALHL patients than in patients with known Meniere's disease and moderate hearing loss, although the SP amplitude was somewhat greater in the former. An abnormal increase in the SP amplitude following click stimuli was found in 54% of the ALHL patients, while the SP/AP ratio was increased abnormally in 63% of these patients. These findings suggest that the pathophysiology of ALHL may be similar to that for endolymphatic hydrops.

    Notes: Summary A new technique, the Double Fracture Method ofin situ stress measurement, is described with regard to its theoretical principles and field instrumentation. The method differs from the hydraulic fracture method in that the loading fluid is prevented from penetrating into the induced fractures. In the new method, the loading pressure is raised to create a set of two mutually perpendicular microfractures on the borehole boundary. The principal stresses and their orientation in the plane normal to the borehole can be deduced from the diametral deformation of the borehole. Laboratory and field measurements validating the method are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents results of our monitoring of BL Lac at the 2.56 m Nordic Optical Telescope in La Palma and at the 0.91 m telescope at National Astronomical Observatory in Dodaira, Japan. On La Palma we used aUBVRI-photopolarimeter which gives truly simultaneous observations in all five colour bands. At Dodaira we used a photopolarimeter which gives simultaneously photometry atB, V andR-bands and polarimetry atV-band. We have observations of BL Lac during flare behaviour and during these times we have observed a clear rotation of the polarization position angle. During these flares the polarization level has also been strongly variable and the object has lost its preferred direction of the polarization position angle. The reason for this behaviour remains still unclear, but there are two possible explanations: shocks in the helical magnetic field in the jet pointing nearly towards us or polarized synchrotron flares rotating within the accretion disk (seen nearly face on) of the supermassive central black hole.

The alloy was nitrided under the following conditions: specimen temperature: 823 K, nitriding time: mainly 108 ks, total pressure: 0.4–0.7 kPa, mixture ratio of N2 and H2∶ 0.25, discharge voltage: 350–450 V, current: 0.8–1.1 A. Formation of a surface layer of iron nitrides was not observed. Formation of a homogeneous internal nitriding layer, consisting of small precipitates of CrN and the γ-phase matrix, was, however, noted. The lattice constant at the specimen surface was smaller than that at greater depth. This may have been because the sputtering effect decreased the dissolved nitrogen content at the specimen surface. The sputtering of iron nitrides at the specimen surface by the plasma was experimentally confirmed through γ′-Fe4N formation on Si beside an alloy specimen. The characteristics of the plasma nitriding mentioned above are discussed in relation to the sputtering.
