Notes: Abstract The formation of phenylaerosil via silica hydride in the gas phase and the subsequent introduction of nitro and amino groups in solution has been followed using IR and UV spectroscopy. The direct reaction of aminophenyltriethoxysilane (APhS) with the silica surface has also been investigated.

Notes: Abstract The present communication deals with investigations of α-SiC(N,O):H thin films produced by DC-plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition under high power conditions. In contrast to traditional processes liquid precursors (hexamethyldisiloxane-HMDSO, hexamethyldisilazane-HMDSN), diluted in argon or nitrogen have been used for the decomposition in the glow discharge.

Notes: Abstract Pyrolytic BN-films have been prepared continuously on HT-carbon fibres by conventional CVD using the reaction of BCl3 with NH3 at temperatures between 700–1000° C and at ambient pressure. The film thickness varied with the N: B ratio, the dilution of the reactant gases, the flow conditions in the reactor tube and the velocity of roving. Good infiltration was obtained up to a thickness of about 50 nm at a speed of roving of 5 m/h. The coatings were characterized by XPS, TEM, REM, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis.

Notes: Abstract Investigations of coated carbon fibres are reported using Raman spectroscopy. Relationships between different process parameters (for example precursor concentration, reactor temperature and various precursors) and the resulting types of carbon fibres are discussed.

Notes: Summary The construction, testing and operation of a semi-technical system for the multi-stage coating of endless fibres by means of thermally-activated CVD is described. One objective of this is to apply layer systems under conditions similar to those used in production with long-term reproducibility. Rovings coated in this way, for example, are made of high-tensile carbon fibres, and used as reinforcing components in the manufacture of modern composite materials. Research programs and laboratory test batches are characterized extensively by methods of surface and solid state analysis such as SEM, TEM, AES, XPS and RAMAN. Analytical investigations are supplemented by strength measurements made at several sites on the fibre coating and on the later application.

Notes: Abstract Quantitative investigations of insulators by electron beam X-ray microanalysis are normally only possible using special preparation techniques for the samples. Samples were coated by evaporation with thin carbon films, but the analysis will fail if the samples themselves contain carbon. Two ways are proposed for solving this problem. Samples and reference samples with similar composition were initially coated by evaporation with carbon. The k-ratios necessary for the determination of element concentrations were calculated either experimentally by relation of the intensities to those of carbon standards or by computer calculation of the film thicknesses using the k-ratios of reference samples. By means of this calculation it was possible to correct the usually measured k-ratios or intensities of samples via modified depth distribution functions.
