    Notes: Summary The present study compared the effect on insulin sensitivity of ACE inhibitors with a sulphydryl group (captopril) or those without a sulphydryl group (delapril and enalapril) during the hyperinsulinaemic euglycaemic clamp test in both animal and clinical experiments. A possible contribution of bradykinin to the improvement of insulin sensitivity by ACE-inhibition was also studied. In healthy control and depancreatized dog experiments, administration of captopril either intravenously (3.0 mmol · kg−1) or orally (5.0 mmol · kg−1) increased insulin sensitivity indices and plasma bradykinin concentrations. In comparison, intravenous administration of an active metabolite of delapril (3.0 mmol · kg−1) and oral administration of either delapril or enalapril (5.0 mmol · kg−1) showed slight, but not significant increases in insulin sensitivity indices and plasma bradykinin concentrations. Infusion of a bradykinin antagonist (N-α-adamantaneacetyl-d-Arg-[Hyp3, Thi5,8,d-Phe7]-bradykinin) (0.5 nmol · kg−1 · min−1) abolished the effect of captopril on insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, intravenous administration of bradykinin (0.1 nmol · kg−1 · min−1) increased insulin sensitivity indices. In clinical experiments, insulin sensitivity indices decreased in the following order: normotensive healthy subjects, hypertensive non-diabetic patients, normotensive NIDDM patients and hypertensive NIDDM patients. In these four groups, oral administration of captopril (2.0 mmol · kg−1) significantly increased insulin sensitivity indices, and a concomitant increase in plasma bradykinin concentrations was observed. By contrast, oral administration of enalapril or delapril showed slight, but not significant effects on insulin sensitivity indices and plasma bradykinin concentrations. From these studies, it is concluded that ACE inhibitors with a sulphydryl group have more potent action on the improvement in insulin sensitivity than those without a sulphydryl group. Bradykinin may also possibly be involved in the mechanism underlying the improvement in insulin sensitivity associated with ACE-inhibition.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Nous avons réalisé une expérimentation sur le lapin afin de déterminer s'il était possible de supprimer chez le receveur les réactions immunitaires aux allogreffes, ceci en traitant les transplantations nerveuses à l'aide de concentrations progresivement croissantes d'éthanol, d'éther et de ficine. Après traitement par l'éthanol l'échafaudage laminaire basal des gaines de Schwann reste intact et il se produit une repousse correcte des axones. Les résultats ne sont pas aussi bons après traitement par l'éther ou par la ficine. La préservation de la laminaire basale est donc le facteur essentiel qui permet, dans cette situation, la régénération nerveuse.
    Notes: Summary We carried out experiments in rabbits to determine whether treating nerve transplants with gradually increasing concentrations of ethanol, ether and ficin would inhibit the graft-host immune reaction to the allograft. After treatment with ethanol, the basal laminar scaffold of the Schwann cell remained intact and there was satisfactory axonal regeneration. The results after additional treatment with ether or ficin did not achieve such good results. Preservation of the basal lamina is considered to be the essential factor in allowing neural regeneration in these circumstances.

    Notes: Abstract The cationic azo-surfactants possessing different spacers and tail alkyl chain lengths have been synthesized by azocoupling ofp-alkylaniline orop-ethoxyaniline with phenol, followed by alkylation and quaternalization with dibromoalkane and trimethylamine, respectively. These surfactants showed a good solubility in water. A reversibletrans-cis isomerization of the azosurfactants by photoirradiation was assessed by UV-Vis absorption spectra. Due to a difference in HLB between thetrans- andcis-surfactants, the observed critical micelle concentration (CMC) values and the electric conductivity of the surfactant solution at above the CMC were significantly affected by the photoinducedtrans-cis isomerization. The azo-surfactants bearing moderate alkyl chain lengths such as surfactants 6 (R2=C2H4, R3=C4H9) and 9 (R2=C4H8, R3=C2H5) were found to be effective to achieve large CMC changes (3.6 mmol/L for 6 and 5.9 mmol/L for 9) by UV-light irradiation. The replacement of the tail chain species also affected the photoresponsive function. The surfactant 12, possessingp-ethoxy group as the tail chain, was found to form a stable micelle aggregation as compared with the structurally related surfactant 10 having ethyl unit as its tail group, but it exhibited a large CMC change (5.3 mmol/L) by UV-light irradiation.

    Notes: Abstract The crystal structure and chain conformation of poly[bis(3,4-dimethylphenoxy)phosphazene] — PB (dMe) PP — have been studied by X-ray diffraction techniques. The unit cell of this polymer shows an orthorhombic form with the crystallographic parameters a=2.05, b=1.49, c (chain axis)=0.998 nm. Its space group is determined as Pbcn-D 2h 14 where the molecular chains are located at the centre and each corner of the unit cell, which contains eight monomeric units; these molecular chains possibly have a — (trans 3 cis)2-conformation. The R factor calculated from the final crystal structure was estimated as 16.9%. As with other types of polyorganophosphazenes, the thermotropic transformation in PB (dMe) PP takes place from the three-dimensionally ordered state to its two-dimensional psuedohexagonal form (a h = 1.49 nm), accompanied by a latent heat change at 96 °C.
