Notes: Summary The effect of nicorandil on myocardial perfusion in ischaemic heart disease has been studied using exercise-load Tl-201 myocardial SPECT (Ex-SPECT). Ex-SPECT was carried out in 12 patients with previous myocardial infarction (OMI) and 9 with angina pectoris (AP) before and after administration of nicorandil 15 mg/day, for three or more weeks; % Tl uptake and the washout rate in infarcted or ischaemic areas were calculated from short axial images using the Bull's eye method. In the OMI group, % Tl uptake and washout rates in the infarction areas improved significantly from 52.4% and 0.25 before nicorandil to 60.4% and 0.38 after it. In the AP group, too, % Tl uptake and washout rates showed a significant improvement from 56.9% and 0.10 before to 69.1% and 0.33 after administration. Six subjects who had not received the drug, and who showed negative washout rates, had high improvement rates when nicorandil was administered, suggesting that the drug could increase myocardial perfusion during exercise loading as well as suppressing coronary spasm. Ex-SPECT was done in 4 subjects before and after nicorandil and after subsequent surgical treatment (PTCA or CABG) and the effects of the two therapies were compared. The washout rate was improved from 0.01 to 0.34 by administration of nicorandil, and a notable increase in coronary artery blood flow was achieved compared to the level after surgical treatment, i.e. 0.50. It was concluded that, normal dosages of nicorandil have a powerful direct effect of dilating the coronary arteries without any influence on preload or afterload.

Notes: Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x films were fabricated by a reactive evaporation method using 10-mol-% O3 gas as an oxygen source. Mass spectroscopy measurement revealed that hydrogen gas was ejected from Y metal and Ba metal sources during evaporation. Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x film growth was adversely affected by the existence of this hydrogen gas, confirmed by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) observation. A streak RHEED pattern was maintained throughout evaporation only when the hydrogen partial pressure was smaller than 1×10−6 Torr. Only films grown under this condition showed superconducting behavior.

Notes: Substrate bias voltages were found to be significantly effective in preparing high-quality laser-deposited superconducting Ba2Y1Cu3O7−δ films at reduced substrate temperatures. The zero-resistance temperature of the biased films, positive bias being more effective than negative, decreased very slightly when the substrate temperature was lowered, whereas that of the unbiased films decreased considerably. In addition, the surface morphology and c-axis orientation have been improved by applying substrate bias voltages. Bias voltages within ±500 V hardly affect the composition of the resulting films so that stoichiometric films have been obtained from a stoichiometric target. A time-resolved optical observation revealed that a short time emission, probably being oxygen plasma, occurred in a few μs after the laser pulse impingement. The improvement in crystallinity of the resulting films is attributed to this emission. The velocity of emissive species in the plume was determined to be 6×105 cm/s. Under positive-biased conditions slower components with a velocity of 3×105 cm/s or less were also observed.

Notes: Processing for the growth of YBa2Cu4O8 (Y124) thin films has been investigated by dc 94.92 MHz hybrid plasma sputtering with in situ annealing. The amorphous precursor is found to be the best candidate for growing pure Y124 phase through in situ annealing. The Raman spectrum confirms the Y124 phase by presenting the modes at 250 and 604 cm−1 related to the double Cu-O chains. X-ray diffraction as well as transmission electron microscopy further show that the films are composed of grain with orthogonal c axes in the film plane. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Direct observations of ions in the laser plume of YBa2Cu3O7−δ impinging onto a substrate surface revealed the increase of heavy species in the plume after multiple laser pulses on the YBa2Cu3O7−δ target. The beginning of heavy species emission from the target was observed at around 100 laser beam pulses (1 J/cm2) in our experiments. Particulate formation at the film surface was observed in the film deposited under this condition.

Notes: The crystal growth mechanism in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films has been revealed by sequential deposition with an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) oxygen plasma using in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) observation. A series of RHEED patterns presents clear evidence that the unit cell of the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O structure is completed as the Bi layers have sandwiched Sr, Ca, and Cu layers. This crystalline process is not an atomic layer by atomic layer growth but a "unit cell by unit cell'' growth.

Notes: Direct observation of ions in the laser plume of YBa2Cu3O7−δ was carried out by time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The direct observation of the species impinging onto the substrate is very important in order to clarify the kinetics of the film formation, so ion sampling was done through the orifice set at the position of the substrate. Thus the results indicate directly the species of ions incident onto the substrate during laser deposition. The analysis of the ion energies was also carried out. Atomic, monoxide, and cluster ions were observed in the laser plume and their energies were determined to be around 200, several tens and a few eV, respectively.

Notes: The crystal structure of a-axis oriented YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) films epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 (100) was investigated by ion channeling measurement. The lattice constant in the film plane was determined from the channeling angle through [110]/[103] angular scan measurements and a-axis lattice constant measured by the x-ray diffraction technique. The lattice constants of the a axis decreased with increasing film thickness, while the obtained lattice constants in the film plane revealed the close values to the lattice constant of the SrTiO3 substrate (3.905 A(ring)). The relaxation of film strain was evaluated from the χ values estimated from [110]/[103] ion channeling. The χ values increased from 16.7% to 26.4% with increasing film thickness from 500 to 3500 A(ring). The effect of the strain relaxation on the superconductivity was confirmed for a-axis oriented YBCO films.

Notes: In-plane aligned a-axis oriented and [110] oriented Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) films exhibiting different anisotropic ratio in resistivity were fabricated, respectively, on LaSrGaO4[100] and SrTiO3[110] substrates by the self-template method. The anisotropic properties of the a-axis films as studied by resistivity and thermoelectric power measurements are believed to reflect the anisotropy intrinsic to the YBCO system. The measured anisotropic properties of the a-axis films exhibiting anisotropy ratio (approximately-greater-than)8 in resistivity and of the as-deposited [110] films were found to be related to cracks and the rough surface of these films. Furthermore, high-resolution microscopy revealed that a-axis film growth by our self-template method is dependent on the kinetics of the deposition process. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7 films grown on a SrTiO3 substrate with and without the template layer have been studied by high-resolution electron microscopy. The self-template layer was found to be very effective to obtain highly crystalline a-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7 film. A disordered cubic perovskite structure with a lattice parameter of 3.85 A(ring) was found in the template layer which could be a good seed for further growth of a-axis film. In the film without the self-template layer, YBa4Cu3Ox cubic perovskite with lattice parameter 4.08 A(ring) was observed to have grown at the interface as an island growth. Moreover, some faulted c-axis film at the very beginning of the template layer was observed even at the rather lower deposition temperature of 640 °C.
