Notes: Summary We have evaluated the effect of prostaglandin E1(PGE1) on renal function after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass in 20 patients, ten of whom received 0.02 μg·kg−1·min−1 of PGE1 by infusion into the oxygenator during bypass; ten patients served as controls. Serum β2-microglobulin fell significantly and urine β2-microglobulin increased significantly after surgery in both groups. Urine N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase was high after surgery in both groups, but it was significantly lower in the PGE1 group. Free water clearance fell significantly on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th postoperative days compared with preoperative values in the control but not in the PGE1 group. These results suggest that PGE1 may prevent renal dysfunction after cardiopulmonary bypass.

Notes: Susceptibility and high field magnetization have been measured for Y(Co1−xMx)2 (M=Al, Fe, and Ni). YCo2 exhibits a metamagnetic transition at 69 T. Ni doping in YCo2 increases the critical field (Bc), while Fe doping decreases it. These changes can be elucidated with the band picture of metamagnetism. Bc of YCo2 exhibits a positive shift proportional to the square of temperature. In the paramagnetic region of Y(Co1−xAlx)2 with x≤0.11, the susceptibility is enhanced with Al and a sharp metamagnetic transition with lower Bc is observed. The susceptibility becomes maximum at a finite temperature Tmax. Bc in the ground state is proportional to Tmax. These experimental results are discussed with a new theory based on a spin fluctuation model. The susceptibility and the metamagnetic transition are found to be very sensitive to pressure.

Notes: Abstract A simple technique for intraoperative cleansing of the impacted colon is described. Saline-irrigation through the torn balloon of the endotracheal tube (38 French) and massaging the impacted feces facilitated drainage of the obstructed colon. This technique was done in two emergent colon operations and immediate anastomosis could be performed safely. An endotracheal tube is always available in an operating room, so this technique is useful and effective in an emergent colon operation without special preparation.
