Notes: Abstract A novel siderophore, called acinetobactin, with both catecholate and hydroxamate functional groups was isolated from low-iron cultures of Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 19606. The structure was elucidated by chemical degradation, fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Acinetobactin was composed of ω-N-hydroxyhistamine, threonine and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid, the last two components forming an oxazoline ring. Acinetobactin was structurally related to anguibactin, a plasmid-encoded siderophore of Vibrio anguillarum. The only difference was that acinetobactin possessed an oxazoline ring instead of a thiazoline ring. Four of 12 other clinical A. baumannii strains examined produced acinetobactin, indicative of strain-to-strain variation in the ability to produce acinetobactin. In addition, a relatively small amount of acinetobactin was also detected in A. haemolyticus ATCC 17906.

Notes: Segregation of fluorine in a SiO2/Si structure has been examined with respect to depth profile and paramagnetic defects at the SiO2/Si interface. The fluorine distribution was found to be restricted to a narrow (less than 35 A(ring)) interface region on the oxide side. Furthermore, a greater amount of fluorine segregation was observed for (111) than for (100) interfaces. These observations suggest that fluorine segregation is caused by intrinsic defects in the interface region and that fluorine atoms terminate the defects. In fact, electron spin resonance measurements provide direct confirmation that fluorine atoms terminate the trivalent Si dangling bonds at the interface.

Notes: Summary We analyzed 445 cases of early gastric cancer to confirm which were associated with lymph-node metastases. Overall, gastric cancers less than 2 cm in size, without an ulcer or ulcer scar, or protuberant or mixed morphology could be expected to be free of lymph-node metastases. In these patients with early gastric cancer without lymph-node metastasis, local treatment using surgical endoscopy could effectively eradicate the disease. Laser irradiation was performed in 44 cases and mucosal resection in 18 cases. All early gastric cancers less than 2 cm in size, with the exception of those located in the prepylorus or high on the posterior wall of the body of the stomach were eradicated by laser irradiation. Mucosal resection was used to ablate cancers less than 1 cm in size and with the exception of 1 case, total clearance was obtained. We conclude that early gastric cancer without lymph-node metastases can be eradicated by surgical endoscopic treatment.
