Notes: Abstract A relationship exists between tumours and malformations both generally and in particular combinations. This is also valid for minor errors of morphogenesis suggesting that embryonic tumours are an expression of aberrant intra-uterine morphogenesis. We speculated that these minor aberrations might also manifest in other morphological defects, especially in minor anomalies and malformations of the ribs. We reviewed chest roentgenographs of 1000 children with malignancies for rib anomalies and compared them to 200 patients with mainly infectious diseases. We found 242 rib anomalies in 218 children with tumours (21.8%) and 11 (5.5%) in children without malignancy. This difference was statistically highly significant (P〈0.001). A high incidence of cervical ribs was found in neuroblastoma (33%), brain tumour (27.4%), leukaemia (26.8%), soft tissue sarcoma (24.5%), Wilms tumour (23.5%) and Ewing sarcoma (17.1%). Only neuroblastoma showed a high incidence of rib bifurcation (4.5%). The increased incidence of these mesenchymal defects in children with malignancies may be another clue for an altered morphogenesis in tumour origin. In neuroblastoma the rib anomaly may be another expression of neurocristopathy as proposed for the association of congenital heart disease and neuroblastoma.

Notes: Abstract The occurrence of a Wilms tumour in a 4-year-old girl with bilateral medullary sponge kidney, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome and congenital hemihypertrophy demonstrates the close relationship between these disorders. Another six cases from the literature with congenital hemihypertrophy and with medullary sponge kidney are discussed, two of them also developed intra-abdominal neoplasm.

Notes: Radiation from 8 to 60 GHz is generated by injecting counterstreaming, high-power (up to 50 keV and 4 A) electron beams into an unmagnetized, plasma-loaded waveguide. The radiation is emitted at twice the plasma frequency and is amplitude modulated on the ion plasma frequency time scale. The beam-to-millimeter-wave power conversion efficiency at 31 GHz is (approximately-greater-than)0.04%. A turbulence theory model is consistent with the radiation characteristics and power scalings.

Notes: A low forward voltage drop plasma switch has been developed for high-efficiency inverter and modulator applications. The switch, called the HOLLOTRON, is based on a grid-controlled, thermionic hollow-cathode discharge. A low forward voltage drop (10–20 V) is achieved by operating the hollow-cathode discharge in a static gas pressure of xenon. The dense plasma generated in the Ba-oxide dispenser hollow cathode is spread over a relatively large control grid area by a diverging magnetic field superimposed on the discharge. Interruption of the discharge current at high current densities ((approximately-greater-than)4 A/cm2) over the grid area is achieved by biasing the control grid sufficiently negative with respect to the plasma. The HOLLOTRON switch has demonstrated voltage stand-off of up to 20 kV, switching times of ≤0.3 μs, and pulse repetition frequencies of 20 kHz at 50% duty.

Notes: Abstract The sonographic morphology of urachal remnants is not well known and findings tend to be misinterpreted. We present urachal remnants in 16 asymptomatic children (1 week-16 years). In the prevesical part two different types of urachal remnants were found: the tubular type with a small outer muscle wall and the fusiform type with a muscle wall thickness up to 12 mm. Further subvariants are presented. Differential diagnosis of the fusiform type includes urachal cyst and tumorous muscle thickening.

Notes: Abstract We report a female neonate who developed severe septicemia presenting with pneumonia and hepatitis due to an infection with herpes simplex virus type II. In spite of antiviral as well as intensive care therapy, three weeks after admission, extensive hepatic calcification was demonstrable on abdominal radiograph, a sign of severe cellular necrosis. In contrast the pulmonary infiltration recovered completely. The clinical follow up was completed by ultrasound and radiography. The infant died at the age of two months secondary to severe postnecrotic hepatic failure. At autopsy, histological evaluation confirmed the former diagnostic and technical findings; in addition, pulmonary calcifications were detected morphologically which had not been seen on the chest radiograph. The significance of progressive organ calcifications for the prognosis of recovery has been discussed.

Notes: Abstract We report on punctate epiphyseal calcifications (stippled epiphyses) in the fetal alcohol syndrome and present the differential diagnosis of chondrodysplasia punctata. A literature survey shows that epiphyseal calcifications accompanying alcoholic embryopathy are regularly located in the lower limbs and rarely found in the upper extremities.

Notes: Abstract The defect formation in the bcc metals W and Mo above annealing stage III and the influence of rare gases on this process were investigated by means of the perturbed angular correlation technique using111In as radioactive probe. In both metals a relatively high electric field gradient (EFG) could be observed at the indium site, characterized by the quadrupole interaction frequencies υQ=263 MHz, ν=0 and υQ=220 MHz, ν≈0.15 for W and Mo, respectively. The observations are assigned to the growth of threedimensional vacancy clusters at the probe atoms with the indium atoms situated in the inner surface of this cavities, thus experiencing the corresponding surface EFG.
