    Notes: Abstract The liquidus compositions of Y, Sm, Gd, Dy and Yb for a melt with a Ba to Cu ratio of 3 to 5 has been investigated by a) dipping thermally equilibrated (held in the furnace for at least 10 min) MgO single crystals into the melt and analyzing the melt stuck to the MgO by ICP; b) dipping a relatively cool not thermally equilibrated Al2O3 polycrystalline rod into the melt (i.e. effective quenching) and analyzing the melt stuck to the rod by ICP. The measurements have been made in the temperature range from approximately 950° C up to about 1300° C. Following thermodynamic calculations, expressions for the liquidus lines are derived and the enthalpy of dissolution for the various RE123 and RE211 are calculated to be nearly the same for the same melt composition. Nevertheless a small increase of the enthalpy of dissolution with increasing peritetic temperature could be detected.

    Notes: Abstract In order to elucidate cytogenetically the cause of male sterility in intraspecific hybrids ofRana japonica, the behavior of chromosomes in the first meiosis was observed in spermatocytes from male reciprocal hybrids between two populations from Hiroshima and Ichinoseki. In the parental Hiroshima and Ichioseki populations, 2530 (96.7%) meiotic spreads had 13 bivalents and 78 (3.0%) contained 12 bivalents and two univalents, whereas in reciprocal hybrids only 337 (7.0%) contained 13 bivalents and the other 4445 (93.0%) had 2–26 univalents. A total of 31647 (93.4%) bivalents was ring-shaped and the other 2234 (6.6%) were rod-shaped in both parental populations, whereas in reciprocal hybrids 26352 (57.1%) and 19819 (42.9%) bivalents were ring- and rod-shaped, respectively. These results show that meiotic chromosomes of reciprocal hybrids are characterized by a remarkable increase in univalents and rod-shaped bivalents.

    Notes: Abstract We compared the position of the normal pituitary gland as estimated by gadolinium (Gd)-DTPA-enhanced MRI, with its position at surgery in 40 patients with intra- and juxtasellar tumours: 22 pituitary adenomas, 4 craniopharyngiomas, 7 meningiomas, 2 germinomas, and 5 Rathke cleft cysts. In 37 of these, the normal gland showed more intense contrast enhancement than the adjacent tumour, from which it could be differentiated by Gd-DTPA-enhanced MRI, especially in the sagittal plane. The direction of displacement of the normal pituitary gland correlated well with tumour type, so that its position proved helpful in the differential diagnosis. The normal gland was typically displaced superiorly by pituitary adenomas, inferiorly by craniopharyngiomas, and anteriorly by germinomas. It showed variable displacement by Rathke cleft cysts, and was not usually displaced by meningiomas.

    Notes: Abstract A 34-year-old man with intermittent exophthalmos, found to have a large varix in the right orbit, was treated by endovascular surgery. Percutaneous transfemoral venous catheterisation and embolisation of the orbital varix was performed on two occasions. A tracker 18 microcatheter was introduced through the righ inferior petrosal sinus, cavernous sinus, superior ophthalmic vein and then into the varix, following a guidewire. Superselective venography of the right ophthalmic vein showed the varix. A total of 204 platinum microcoils was used to pack the varix. At the time of discharge, the exophthalmos had largely resolved. As this technique is much less invasive than surgical resection, we recommend an attempt at endovascular embolisation of orbital varices prior to surgical removal.

    Notes: Abstract With large pituitary adenomas, the optic nerves and chiasm usually lie on the tumour capsule and are displaced superiorly. We report a large invasive pituitary adenoma, with complete involvement of both optic nerves. Review of the preoperative MR images demonstrated the optic nerves, with signal intensity close to that of cerebral white matter, and different from the flow void of the basal cerebral arteries. Correlation of this observation with intraoperative findings is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The position of the normal pituitary gland, assessed using gadolinium-enhanced MRI was compared with the position found at surgery for pituitary adenoma in 25 patients. The tumours were five microadenomas and 20 macroadenomas. Using T1-weighted imaging, the anterior lobe could be differentiated on the sagittal image in five patients (20%) and on the coronal image in four (16%). The high intensity of the posterior lobe could be differentiated using T1-weighted sagittal imaging in 13 patients (52%). The normal pituitary gland, which enhanced more strongly than tumour, could be differentiated using Gd-DTPA-enhanced MRI on the sagittal images in 22 cases (88%) and on the coronal image in 17 (68%). In seven patients, the normal pituitary gland surrounded the tumour; it was displaced superiorly in 14 cases and superioposterorly in two but in no case was it displaced anteriorly or downwards.
