Notes: Summary Thirty-nine cases of primary intracranial arachnoid cyst in the elderly, including one case of our own, were analyzed. Clinical characteristics in these patients were as follows. (1) The number of patients decreased with age, but there were no differences according to sex. (2) Clinical manifestations were similar to those of chronic subdural haematoma or normal pressure hydrocephalus including dementia, urinary incontinence, and hemiparesis. General symptoms such as headache and seizures were also present. (3) Surgery was performed in most patients with generally good outcome regardless of operative procedures (capsular resection vs. shunt). (4) In some cases of advanced age, disease manifestation may have been due to slight head injuries. Our own case is described as an example.

Notes: A serine protease from mite faecal extract, Dermatophagoides farinae, was purified using DEAE-Sephacel anion exchange chromatography and Supcrdex 75 pg gel chromato-graphy. The molecular weight of this protease was 34 kD on SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions. The optimal pH and temperature of the protease were 8-0 and 47 C, respectively. In addition, this protease cleaved arginyl or lysyl residue containing substrates selectively and was only inhibited by aprotinin, PUT-175, tind soy bean trypsin inhibitor and not by chymostatin, E-64 and iodoacetic acid. These results show that our purified serine protease belongs to the trypsin-type. Purified trypsin-like protease was shown to be allergenic by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Antigeni-city of trypsin-like protease was completely different from those of Der f I and Der f II. Both, 20 N-terminal amino acid sequence and amino acid compositions of the purified protease were very similar to those of Der f III. Good similarities were found between trypsin-like protease and Der f III concerning physicochemical properties such as molecular weight on SDS-PAGE and ammonium sulphate solubility. Summarizing the above data, it can be concluded that a trypsin-like protease from mite faecal extract is actually the Der f III allergen and that it may be involved in the digestive process of the mite as it was found not in mite body but in mite faeces.

Notes: A new set of allergens from Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and D. farinae (provisionally named DPS and DF5, respectively) was isolated from the whole culture of mites. The apparent molecular weights of both allergens were shown to be 25000 on SDS-PAGE under a reducing condition and 27000 on Sephadex G-75 gel nitration chromatography. Both DP5 and DF5, as well as Der f III, possessed proteolytic activity. The results of substrate specificity and susceptibility to various protease inhibitors of DP5 and DF5 strongly suggested that they belonged to the chymotrypsin-like serine protease family. In sera from 88 mite-allergic patients, specific IgE antibodies to DP5 and/or DF5 were detected in only 41% of the sera by radio-allergosorbent test, while 90% and 93% had specific IgE antibodies to Der p I and/or Der f I and Der p II and/or Der f II, respecti vely.

Notes: A sheet plasma ion source has been developed. The new technology will allow simultaneous irradiation of large area samples of 500 mm in width with a high-current ion beam. As a first step of this development, a sheet ion beam of 90 mm width and currents of 38 mA had been successfully extracted from the stable sheet plasma. Both characteristics of the sheet plasma discharge and the sheet ion beam extraction are reported in this article.

Notes: Abstract The effects of combined exposure to ozone and cigarette smoke on airway responsiveness and tracheal vascular permeability, compared with those of single exposure were examined in guinea pigs. Airway responsiveness was assessed by measuring the specific airway resistance (sRaw) as a function of increasing concentration of inhaled methacholine aerosol immediately, 5 hr, and 24 hr after exposure. In a parallel study, tracheal vascular permeability was quantified by measuring the tracheal extravasation of intravenously administered Evans blue dye. Neither exposure to 1 ppm ozone for 30 min nor 5 puffs of cigarette smoke increased airway responsiveness or vascular permeability at any time after exposure. Combined exposure to 1 ppm ozone for 30 min and 5 puffs of cigarette smoke caused airway hyperresponsiveness and increased vascular permeability immediately after exposure. Exposure to 1 ppm ozone for 90 min increased both airway responsiveness and vascular permeability immediately after exposure. Exposure to 10 puffs of cigarette smoke increased airway responsiveness but not vascular permeability immediately after exposure. Combined exposure to 1 ppm ozone for 90 min and 10 puffs of cigarette smoke increased both airway responsiveness and vascular permeability immediately after exposure. The combined exposure to ozone and cigarette smoke thus increased both airway responsiveness and tracheal vascular permeability to a greater extent than did exposure to a single agent, suggesting that a combination of air pollutants has a more deleterious effect both on airway responsiveness and on tracheal vascular permeability than does either agent alone in guinea pigs.
