Notizen: The magnetic structures of several single-crystal, magnetic rare-earth superlattice systems grown by molecular-beam epitaxy are reviewed. In particular, the results of recent neutron diffraction investigations of long-range magnetic order in Gd-Y, Dy-Y, Gd-Dy, and Ho-Y periodic superlattices are presented. In the Gd-Y system, an antiphase domain structure develops for certain Y layer spacings, whereas modified helical moment configurations are found to occur in the other systems, some of which are commensurate with the chemical superlattice wavelength. References are made to theoretical interaction mechanisms recently proposed to account for the magnetic states of these novel materials.

Notizen: The correlation of deposition parameters, microstructure, and stability of rf-diode sputtered magneto-optical thin films has been studied by using transmission electron microscopy and a magneto-optical hysteresis loop tracer. Among the sputtering parameters, we found that both argon bleeding pressure and substrate bias have strong influences on microstructure and consequently the oxidation resistance of the films. Sputtering using moderate argon pressure and substrate bias produces dense and smooth films. The bare films are strongly resistant to oxidation. In contrast, low or high argon pressure and substrate table bias result in films of high porosity, columnar "islandlike'' structure, or "spongelike'' morphology. They degrade rapidly in air.

Notizen: A simple model for calculating the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida exchange interaction between layers of a magnetic rare-earth (RE) metal separated by yttrium is presented. The calculation is semiphenomenological and makes use only of previously measured or calculated quantities. It is valid when the thickness of the magnetic RE layers is much smaller than that of the Y layers. The coupling is found to be of fairly long range and to be consistent in sign with the ordering observed in Gd-Y superlattices. For the actual case of comparable layer thicknesses, a discussion of the superlattice wave functions is given. We show that our simple model is very plausible for constituent metals with simple band structures. For the actual band structure of Gd, eigenstates that are evanescent in the Gd region may provide a justification of our model and account for the agreement with experiment. Further theoretical and experimental work is necessary for understanding these systems.

Notizen: The microscopic magnetic structures of coherent, single-crystal epitaxially grown superlattices consisting of successive bilayers of NGd basal planes of hexagonal-close-packed Gd followed by NY such atomic planes of nonmagnetic Y have been studied by polarized neutron diffraction. It has been found that for NGd=10, either a simple parallel alignment of the ferromagnetic Gd layers or an antiphase domain structure occurs, depending on the number of intervening Y planes in an oscillatory manner. These data are consistent with a RKKY coupling mechanism between Gd layers. In addition to the investigation of the interlayer interactions, measurements of the magnetization profile across the thickness of a Gd layer have been performed.

Notizen: Recent reports of huge magneto-optical Kerr rotations in certain crystalline metallic uranium compounds prompted a study of the magnetic and magneto-optical effects of uranium additions to a rare-earth transition metal amorphous alloy. Using variable composition samples, the polar Kerr effect at a small spot (e.g., 0.5 mm diam) was measured as field, temperature, and composition were varied. Points on the Curie line and the edges of the compensation region were determined from these observations. The compositions studied included (TbxFe1−x)1−yUy with 0.125≤x≤0.550 and y=0.0, 0.04, 0.07, 0.16. The addition of uranium to TbxFe1−x depresses the TC of Tb-rich material much more strongly than that of Tb-poor material. The compensation region does not shift at all with increasing y. It appears that uranium does not contribute to the magnetization of these amorphous alloys, nor does it significantly affect the magneto-optical effects.

Notizen: The results of specific-heat and inductive Tc measurements on reacted liquid-infiltrated superconducting composite wires with an overall composition of Nb-8 at. % Sn are presented. It is found that approximately 23 wt. % of the reacted wire is high Tc A15 phase, a result not expected from the accepted equilibrium phase diagram. The relatively sharp superconducting transition at 18 K is indicative of a uniform stoichiometric Nb-25 at. % Sn composition in the A15 phase. The large fraction of high Tc material in these wires is due to taking advantage of the rapid diffusion of Nb in liquid Sn. From a detailed analysis of the specific heat, comments on the reaction process are made. Implications for the equilibrium phase diagram are discussed.

Notizen: Measurements of the transport critical-current density (Jc), magnetization Jc, and magnetoresistance in a number of bulk sintered samples of Y1Ba2Cu3Ox from several different laboratories indicate that the transport Jc is limited by weak-link regions between high Jc regions. The weak-link Jc has a Josephson character, decreasing by two orders of magnitude as the magnetic field is increased from 0.1 to 10 mT at 77 K. An examination of the grain-boundary region in Y1Ba2Cu3Ox shows no observable impurities or second phases to the scale of the [001] lattice planes (∼12 A(ring)). The effect of intrinsic conduction anisotropy is discussed. A current-transfer model is proposed in which weak conduction along the c axis plays a role in limiting Jc at grain boundaries. Orienting the grains in the powder state during processing may result in enhanced transport Jc in bulk conductors.

Notizen: Amorphous GdCo films with perpendicular anisotropy have been prepared by dc diode getter sputtering under argon or neon pressure. To study the aging behavior, the films with no protecting layer were used and exposed to air at room temperature. We have observed that the perpendicular anisotropy in these uncoated GdCo films significantly increases with time. Furthermore, the negative (in-plane) anisotropy which existed at the initial stage during aging actually decreases with time and finally disappears.

Notizen: The long-range helimagnetic order in synthetic rare-earth Dy-Y superlattices has been studied. The magnetic spiral of Dy maintains its coherence in a (Dy38 A(ring)-Y38.6 A(ring))80 superlattice, but not in a (Dy38A(ring)-Y120.4 A(ring))80 superlattice where the intervening Y layers are 42 atomic planes thick. Furthermore, the spiral periodicity shows a markedly different temperature dependence from that of bulk Dy, including a smaller range of variation and a "lock-in'' at low temperature.

Notizen: Amorphous Tb-Fe thin films prepared by dual magnetron cosputtering were exposed to air at 200 °C in order to investigate the evolution of the films as they oxidize. Magnetic properties of the films were measured using a vibrating-sample magnetometer and torque magnetometer and are interpreted in light of the structure of the films as revealed by Auger electron spectroscopy and composition-depth profiling. This leads to a detailed and self-consistent description of the oxidation process. At first a uniform and homogeneous oxidation layer grows from the surface toward the substrate. This layer has a high magnetization and low intrinsic anisotropy and consists of an intimate mixture of oxidized Tb and metallic TbxFe(1−x). The initially high intrinsic anisotropy of the unoxidized region decreases relatively quickly, while the composition changes only slowly as this region shrinks. When the oxidation layer reaches the substrate, two oxide phases (Fe2O3 and Tb2O3) begin to grow at the surface exposed to air.
