Notes: Si monolayer deposition on sapphire substrates was investigated by in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Si deposition was carried out using direct photolysis of Si2H6 by irradiation of 193 nm ArF excimer laser light (1–2 W/cm2 , 70 Hz) at room temperature in a high-vacuum chamber. At first, decomposed Si atoms bound strongly with O atoms on sapphire until the entire sapphire surface was covered, then SiSi bonds were formed. From the growth mode analysis of the early stage of Si deposition, it can be seen that the growth mode of the deposited layer is a layer-by-layer mode (the Frank–Van der Merwe-type growth). The thickness of the deposited Si layers can be controlled on an atomic scale. As these features are suitable for Si-on-sapphire (SOS) epitaxial growth with predeposited layers, SOS epitaxial growth was demonstrated and the SOS films were characterized by replica electron microscopy and fabricating a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor.

Notes: To investigate the successive ordering processes of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet CsNiCl3, a Heisenberg system with an easy-axis anisotropy, optical birefringence has been studied on various hexagonal ABX3 systems involving other types of anisotropy. The birefringence for light propagating along the c axis clearly shows that the basal plane component of spins in CsNiCl3 is ordered below the lower Néel point TN2. A cusplike anomaly in the temperature dependence of the birefringence for light propagating perpendicular to the c axis is observed at the upper Néel point TN1 of the Heisenberg system with an easy-axis anisotropy. A plausible explanation for this anomaly is presented in connection with a spin frustration effect.

Notes: We have developed an ionic anemometer utilizing a glow discharge for the purpose of observing stratospheric turbulence. The anemometer has a three-electrode structure; two electrodes made of Ni mesh hold a glow discharge between them and act as the source of ion tracers. The third electrode collects the ions interacting with wind. The minimum detectable wind speed is less than 1 cm/s over a pressure range of 15–35 Torr. The lifetime of this device is more than 50 h. The anemometer has been successfully operated on balloon-borne experiments carried out in 1983 and 1984.

Notes: The properties of a deep electron trapping center found in Si-doped In0.51Ga0.49−xAlxP (x=0.24) grown on Si-doped GaAs(100) substrates using molecular-beam epitaxy are studied. The trapping parameters for this center are determined as follows: thermal activation energy 0.48 eV, photoionization energy 1.25 eV, and capture barrier 0.10 eV. The concentration of this center is about seven times as high as that of the shallow donor state and is found to increase with an increasing amount of Si atoms incorporated into the crystal. The thermally activated persistent behaviors of photocarriers are also observed at low temperatures. These results suggest that this center can be regarded as a kind of DX center originally found in AlGaAs, which should be depicted as a state with large lattice relaxation using a configuration coordinate diagram.

Notes: The expression of antigenic determinants, Rg/Ch/WH, on Japanese C4 allotypes has been studied. Although the Japanese C4 allotype frequencies are known to differ from Europeans, the antigenic expression of their C4 allotypes correlates with associations described previously. All 89 random donors and 17 selected donors were Rg:1,2 so neither Rg:1,−2 nor Rg:−1,−2 was found. The frequency of Ch: 1,−2,3 was elevated while that of Ch: 1,2,3 was reduced, which was seen as a direct result of the higher frequency of B2 and B5 allotypes. None of the Japanese were Ch: 1,2,−3, but this can be accounted for by the absence of the A*6,B*1 haplotype. The WH determinant, which has been associated completely with Rg:1,−2 in Caucasians, was found at a higher frequency, 32%, in association with an A*3,2,B*QO haplotype expressing Rg:1,2, which has not been described previously. Detailed investigation showed that the A3 allotype was Rg:1,2 whereas the A2 allotype only expressed Rg1 (Rg:1,−2 WH+).

Notes: Summary The one-electron oxidation activity of brown-rot fungi was determined by measuring ethylene production from KTBA. Ethylene production was related to degradation of lignin, cellulose, and wood itself. Extracellular protein that catalyzed oxidation of KTBA was isolated from wood-containing cultures. This protein required H2O2 for KTBA oxidation. It was also found to oxidize NADH, producing H2O2 via $$O_2^{\bar \cdot } $$ in the presence of O2. The protein showed little phenol-oxidase activity under conditions giving high activity against KTBA. The results indicate that partially reduced oxygen may play a role in the initial degradation of the cellulose and lignin in wood in cultures of brown-rot fungi.

Notes: Summary We describe a new method of reconstructing the posterior elements of the thoracic spine following decompression of the cord through a wide posterior approach. Osteoperiosteal corticocancellous grafts are harvested from the iliac wing, then bent into a semicircle with the periosteum on the inside and inserted between the resected vertebral pedicles where they act as a base for further grafting. The posterior spinoligamentous complex is preserved and reattached. This technique permits circumferential decompression of the thoracic cord through a posterior approach and posterior thoracic interbody fusion. Fifteen patients were treated by this method and a solid fusion achieved in each case. No bony ingrowth into the spinal canal was observed.
