Notizen: The Limousin ophiolite is located at the suture zone between two major thrust sheets in the western French Massif Central. This ophiolitic section comprises mantle-harzburgite, mantle-dunite, wehrlites, troctolites and layered gabbros. It has recorded a static metamorphic event transforming the gabbros into undeformed amphibolites and the magmatic ultramafites into serpentinites and/or pargasite-bearing chloritites. With various thermobarometric methods, it is possible to show that the different varieties of amphibole have registered low-P (c. 0.2 GPa) conditions with temperature ranging from high-T, late-magmatic conditions to greenschist–zeolite metamorphic facies. The abundance of undeformed metamorphic rocks (which is typical of the lower oceanic crust), the occurrence of Ca–Al (–Mg) metasomatism illustrated by the growth of Ca–Al silicates in veins or replacing the primary magmatic minerals, the P–T conditions of the metamorphism and the numerous similarities with oceanic crustal rocks from Ocean Drilling Program and worldwide ophiolites are the main arguments for an ocean-floor hydrothermal metamorphism in the vicinity of a palaeo-ridge. Among the West-European Variscan ophiolites, the Limousin ophiolites constitute an extremely rare occurrence that has not been involved in any HP (subduction-related) or MP (orogenic) metamorphism as observed in other ophiolite occurrences (i.e. France, Spain and Germany).

Notizen: Summary Smiling by live Down's syndrome and seven non-handicapped infants was recorded longitudinally during face-to-face interactions with their mothers over the first 6 months of the infants' lives. Two conditions, “mobile” (mothers were asked to talk to the baby as naturally as possible) and ‘immobile’ (silent and maintain an impassive face), were contrasted. Between-group comparisons confirmed previous findings of significantly delayed emergence and less frequent smiling by the infants with Down's syndrome. Their smiles were also found to be shorter, and less discriminative between the two free-to-face conditions. The non-handicapped infants showed significantly more cry/distress vocalizations in the immobile than in the mobile condition, while the reverse was found for the Downs syndrome infants. A close temporal association between smiling and eye contact with mothers was found for both groups of infants. In a free interaction condition, mothers of the Down's syndrome babies showed a stronger tendency to use kinaesthetic and tactile stimulation than mothers of the non-handicapped infants.

Notizen: Abstract First results are presented from an experiment scattering laser light from a relativistic electron beam. The 5 cm diameter continuous electron beam of 28 keV kinetic energy and 2.6 A current presents an electron gas of a density of 8×107 cm−3, from which 20 ns pulses of laser light (490 nm) were scattered at a repetition rate of 15 Hz and an average power of 20 mJ per pulse. The Doppler-shifted wavelength of photons backscattered under 180° was analysed with a Fabry-Perot interferometer. This technique provides, for the first time, a non-destructive measurement of the velocity distribution in an electron beam radially resolved in space. The results presented here comprise the direct measurement of the absolute electron energy and the degree of space-charge compensation in the electron beam. The determination of an upper bound of 10−2 for the ratio of longitudinal to transverse electron temperature implies the first direct measurement of a flattened velocity distribution.

Notizen: Abstract An overdeterministic method for determining the opening-mode stress-intensity factor,K I , from many measurements of the radial strain,∈ rr , is described. The method was verified with an experimental study of a compact-tension specimen where strains along the 0, 45 and 90-degree lines were measured using strip gages with ten strain sensors per strip gage. The results indicated errors in the range of one to three percent with three or four parameter models of the strain field in the region near the crack tip.

Notizen: Abstract The production of antihydrogen by merging beams of antiprotons and positrons is described. Both beams, kept in storage devices, are continuously recirculated. Antihydrogen is formed by radiative recombination of positrons and antiprotons. Production rates of a few thousand per second are expected. The semi-relativistic atomic beam of antihydrogen would have a divergence of less than 1 mrad and a beam diameter of a few millimeter. The possibilities to increase these rates by induced recomtination are discussed. The scheme of antihydrogen production in overlapping beams is compared to other approaches.

Notizen: Abstract This study presents a novel approach to the analysis of protein antigens ofCampylobacter pylori for use in serology. Protein fractions of this bacterium were resolved in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, eluted from gel strips in an electric field and used for coating of microtiter plates in an ELISA-type assay run with a small set of sera from both infected and non-infected patients. Reactivity and discriminative power of the different fractionated antigens (1–9) and crude antigen preparations (A–C) were compared. Better discrimination was achieved between positive and negative sera with high molecular weight fractionated preparations (antigens 8 and 9) than with low molecular weight fractions. Among the crude antigen preparations, antigens A (sonicated whole cells) and C (ultracentrifugated sonicate) seem to have a better discriminative power than antigen B (acid glycin extract).

Notizen: Summary Medial confluence of the breasts, or symmastia, is probably not a rare entity, despite the paucity of the literature on the subject. It causes aesthetic disfigurement and problems with apparel and, in the case presented, was associated with chronic furunculosis or multiple pilonidal sinuses. Both problems were satisfactorily dealt with by means of a modified bipedicled vertical dermal flap technique with excision of the central part of the chest wall, where the skin lesions were present. The result was cosmetically acceptable.

Notizen: The microbially mediated biochemical reactions that occur during anaerobic digestion processes for methane production from soluble carbon energy substrates are well known, but in spite of this, the interactions within the multi-species cultures responsible for the overall process require more detailed elucidation. When the process feed comprises mixed, solid, carbon energy substrates, as in the case of waste sewage sludge stabilization, many aspects of both the process biochemistry and microbiology are unresolved. This mini-review seeks to identify some of these unresolved questions, particularly with respect to operation at thermophilic temperatures.
