Notes: Allergy skin testing of infants and small children continues to be time-consuming and nerve-wracking. We hoped to have found the solution to these problems by using the multi-test (MT). The latter consists of an applicator with 8 heads, each head consisting of nine plastic needles on which the allergen solution rests. Thus eight allergens can be tested simultaneously. During routine control skin testing we compared MT with our usual method, the prick test (PT), amongst twenty patients. Twenty-seven percent of the skin reactions differed by more than 1 +. When we compared PT results with the previous PT, the correlation of 16% was better despite several years interval between tests, different persons carrying out the tests, and hyposensitization of patients. We adapted the MT system and produced a model, multi-test 2 (MT-2), which consists of eight sterile disposable needles on a stainless steel base. When we compared the MT-2 with PT, only 6% differed by more than 1 +. Thus the MT-2 proves to be a useful alternative to the PT for those children, in whom the PT is too difficult to carry out.

Notes: The simplified oscillation method was adapted to register nasal resistance because complicated and difficult procedures limited other known rhinomanometric tests. An initial study of thirty-nine subjects compared the effect of different-sized masks, revealing that the smaller the face mask, the smaller the capacitance and the higher the effective resistance. After an initial measurement, a second study group of twenty healthy and twenty pollinosis patients aged from 4 to 40 years underwent nasal provocation with grass pollen extract. Both study groups showed that despite high resistance, reactances were minor. This occurs because the nose acts as an aperture and an aperture has minimal reactances. With increasing concentrations of pollen extract, the nasal resistance of pollinosis subjects increased steadily, whereas the controls showed no change. Passive anterior rhinomanometry was measured for comparison and results contrasted sharply with the oscillation method: prior to provocation, initial values of control and pollinosis groups were already significantly different; after provocation, there was a statistically significant rise in resistance amongst the control as well as the pollinosis subjects. Further, the oscillation method for measuring nasal resistance proved to be simple, effective, and suitable for children.

Notes: We have analysed the genetic relationship between Misa and FcγR in mice. Using the FcγR-specific DNA probes, we were unable to detect a restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) which is consistent in DNA derived from Mlsa strains and which differed from that of Mlsb strains, while we could see a polymorphism that distinguishes Ly17.1 from Ly17.2, alleles of the FcγR. These results strongly suggest that Mlsa is neither a product of the αFcγR nor of the βFcγR gene.Furthermore, we have re-examined the tissue distribution of Mlsa determinants using a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II antigen-positive T-cell tumour as well as a pure population of bone marrow derived macrophages of Mlsa genotype. Both these cell types were recognized to varying degrees by alloreactive cells; however, none of them expressed functionally detectable Mlsa determinants. We conclude from our studies that Mlsa is a highly stimulatory self peptide that is exclusively expressed in B cells.

Notes: Abstract At collision energies below 15 keV total charge transfer cross sections have been measured for multiply charged Arζ+(2≦ζ≦6) and Neζ+(2≦ζ≦4) ions colliding with atomic hydrogen. A Wood discharge was used to provide a hydrogen target with a sufficiently high degree of dissociation. Results are compared with measurements performed at higher energies and with theoretical calculations. For ζ=2 cross sections in atomic hydrogen are much smaller than in the molecular case, for ζ〉2 the ratio of these cross sections varies between 0.7 and 1.6.

Notes: Abstract Single electron capture processes in Ne2+/Ar, Kr collisions were studied by aid of the high-resolution translational spectroscopy. At low collision energies (〈1 keV) the dominant contribution to the Ne+-spectrum arises from Ne2+ ions in the metastable1 S 0-state, although it is the weakest component of the primary Ne2+ beam. Ne2+(3 P) and Ne2+*(1 D) projectiles play no important role due to unfavourable energy defects. Target excitation processes as well as transfer ionisation are considered as a possible explanation for different structures in the measured Ne+ spectra.

Notes: Abstract Single electron capture by triply charged rare gas ions colliding with various rare gas atoms has been studied by means of translational energy spectroscopy (TES) at low collision energies. The final state population is discussed in terms of the so-called reaction window predicted by various models as well as by extended multichannel Landau Zener calculations (MCLZ). The analysis shows the limitations of such model descriptions and yields information on the coupling strength in the case of inner shell capture or multi-electron processes.
