Notes: Abstract We developed a cooperative model of the cortical column incorporating an idealized subunit, the trion (which represents a localized group of neurons), and a discrete time step for firing. We found that networks composed of a small number of trions (with symmetric interactions) supported up to thousands of quasi-stable, periodic firing patterns (MPs) which could be selected out with only small changes in interaction strengths using a Hebb-type algorithm. Here we report a study of the associative recall properties showing striking features: By considering all possible initial firing patterns (for a given set of network connections), we find 1) It takes on the average only 2–5 time steps to recall an MP. 2) Many of the MPs can be individually accessed by thousands of different initial patterns. The variety of examples presented illustrate the rich, general nature of the model.

Notes: Abstract A patient with unilateral preauricular appendages and occipital mass is described who died on the fifth day of life. An autopsy demonstrated congenital megabladder and megaureters and dysplastic kidneys. The neuropathological examination revealed cranium bifidum in the occipital region, defective posterior arch of the Cl vertebral body, agenesis of vermis and a large cerebellocele. It is suggested that some patients with the Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome may have prominent central nervous system involvement in spite of only relatively slight facial involvement.

Notes: The construction of an arc vessel designed to measure the axial profile of thermal wall loading in a vortex-stabilized arc lamp is described. The cooling jacket, which surrounds the quartz arc tube is made of glass and is partitioned so that the axial profile of wall loading can be measured by continuous flow calorimetry. A notable feature is that, if required, the inner tube can easily be removed and replaced. Procedures for the calibration of the calorimeter are outlined and checks which were made for systematic errors in the apparatus are also reported. A profile, obtained with the calorimeter, is presented for a 17-kW arc operating in argon at a pressure of 5 1/2 atm and with a dc current of 225 A.

Notes: The double exposure laser speckle photography technique has been used to measure the radial velocity profile in a simple gas jet. In order to achieve operation in the speckle regime, the flow was seeded with a high density (1.35×107 cm−3) of 0.6-μm-diam aerosol droplets. At low Reynolds number, the measurements yield a velocity profile which agrees well with theory. At high Reynolds number, where the flow is turbulent, the small-scale turbulence destroys the correlation between the two exposures. While this precludes the measurement of the mean velocity, it suggests that this technique may be a sensitive means of detecting the onset of turbulence.

Notes: By measuring the axial profiles of thermal wall loading and radiation output in a dc vortex-stabilized arc, it has been shown that the vortex significantly influences the energy transport in the arc. The arc was operated at 225 A in an argon vortex at a pressure of 5.5 atm. The measurements show that there is a rapid onset of thermal wall loading immediately adjacent to the upstream electrode. Furthermore, there is a significant amount of thermal wall loading upstream of the arc column, which is found to scale with the flowrate through the vortex. This fact, taken together with observations of the tracks produced by tungsten droplets on the arc wall, and photographs of the electrode regions indicate that reverse axial flow exists in the core of the arc vortex. Near the electrodes there is a region of locally increased thermal wall loading and radiation output, but between these regions there exists a region where the wall loading and radiation are axially invariant. In this region the measured wall loading is as much as 100% larger than that predicted using laminar heat transport. The scaling of this wall loading with gas flowrate in the vortex has been measured, and it has been shown that if the data are extrapolated to the no-flow condition, the wall loading is in much better agreement with the laminar heat transport model. The existence of turbulence or Taylor–Görtler vorticies in the stabilizing gas flow are proposed as mechanisms for the enhanced thermal wall loading.

Notes: Summary. The potential value of a bolus injection of ritodrine in the management of fetal distress was examined in 24 patients. Following the injection of ritodrine, uterine activity measured over a period of 14·7±6·3 (SD) min was reduced to 22 (±12·4 SD)% of the pre-existing values. The cardiotocographic tracings showed a reversion to a normal or less ominous pattern in 14 of the 16 patients where this could be evaluated. The infants in the ritodrine group took less time to establish regular respirations. The perinatal neurobehaviour in the ritodrine and control groups did not differ. Two mothers who were given ritodrine and who received atropine premedication developed tachycardia and marked systolic hypertension. The administration of a bolus of ritodrine may have a place in the management of fetal distress when caesarean section is unavoidably delayed, but atropine premedication must be avoided as the combination can lead to potentially serious cardiovascular complications.

Notes: Summary The dopamine levels were found to be low in the putamen and relatively high in the nucleus accumbens in two Parkinson disease patients treated with levodopa up to the time of their deaths. Tyrosine hydroxylase immunocytochemistry revealed a severe degeneration of the nigro-striatal dopamine neuronal system in both postmortem brains. The relatively high dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens may be responsible for the occurrence of dyskinesias.
