Notes: Summary Calcification of the media of the arteries of the lower limbs, giving a linear type of calcification roentgenologically is typical for diabetic arteriosclerosis. Spotty calcification of the arteries of the lower extremity, which histologically is found in the intima, is also seen a little more often in diabetics with gangrene. There are no major differences between the other histological vascular structures of diabetics and arteriosclerotics. Maximal stenosis of the lumen is found more peripherally in diabetics than in persons with normal carbohydrate metabolism. The results favour the idea of predominant femoropopliteal occlusion in arteriosclerosis and popliteal-tibial occlusion in diabetics.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The study of the mitotic activity of the corneal and duodenal epithelia was carried out in mice with Ehrlich carcinoma (both solid and ascites form), and in rats with Walker and Jensen tumors. There were no differences in the values for the animals studied and in control values. The deviation of the results here from those reported in the literature can be attributed to the use of other animals and tumors. A fluctuation in the diurnal rhythm of mitoses was indicated. This variation could be missleading if comparisons of experimental and control animals were made only at occasional times of the day.

Notes: Summary Relaxin was measured in cervico-vaginal secretion of non-pregnant women of reproductive age using the heterologous radioimmunoassay for porcine relaxin. It was detected in about three-quarters of the samples collected. The mean value of the 529 samplers tested was 599 pg/ml. There was a slight trend to higher relaxin values during the second week of the menstrual cycle.

Notes: Abstract A quantitative investigation of the retinal blood vessels was carried out in 80 diabetics and 20 metabolically healthy controls of the same age and sex distribution. The blood vessels were isolated by trypsinization, stained with PAS, and analyzed by light microscopy. After 1–5 years' duration of diabetes mellitus, capillary lesions in the ocular fundus can be seen microscopically in the slides, but not with a stereomicroscope. In the retinae of persons with normal carbohydrate metabolism, capillary defects were found to a far lesser extent; they were also always localized in the periphery of the retina, whereas the diabetic lesions were localized in the retinal center. In the diabetics, both capillary lesions (e.g., loss of pericytes) and damage of the retinal neurons occurred nearly simultaneously and with the same retinal localization. This suggests that the capillary lesions are not the cause of neuronal degeneration but that both events are caused by the same mechanisms of pathogenesis.
