Notes: A model of properties of colloidal dispersions of fine paramagnetic particles has been investigated. The model has been used to investigate the effects of large magnetic fields on the short-range order within the dispersions. The onset of significant short-range order at a well-defined critical field has been found, in agreement with previous experimental work.

Notes: Two cases of severe accidental hypothermia (core temperature (28°C) rewarmed employing the Clinitron system are described. The physiological changes during hypothermia and rewarming are discussed and the current concepts of rewarming (active external versus internal) outlined. It is suggested that severely hypothermic patients can be successfully treated by rapid external rewarming using the Clinitron heated fluidised-bead bed. This method combines the advantages of rapid rewarming, minimal physiological disturbance and is non invasive.

Notes: Uncontrolled weeds reduced tobacco yields by 26% over a 4-year period, caused substantial changes in the grade distribution, significantly reduced the price index and affected the chemical composition of flue-cured tobacco (cultivar Hicks). Treatments with diphenamid, pebulate, or benfluralin-pubulate visibly injured transplanted tobacco. After diphenamid treatment, tobacco generally did not differ from the cultivated controls in yield or gross dollar returns. In contrast, the mixture of benfluralin-pebulate increased dollar returns per hectare. The most striking differences followed pebulate applied alone which increased tobacco yields, significantly increased dollar returns, and elevated the levels of total nitrogen and alkaloids in tobacco leaves. All herbicide treatments tended to improve the grading quality of Hicks tobacco.

Notes: Summary Ferrochelatase in membrane preparations fromAzospirillum brasilense displayed an activity of 2.17 μmol protoheme formed · h−1 · mg protein−1 which is 10-fold greater than previous reports for other bacteria. This ferrochelatase showed an apparentK m of 20.9 μM for Fe2+, a pH optimum of 6.0–6.5, and stimulation by oleic or stearic acids. Co2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ inhibited the incorporation of Fe2+ into protoporphyrin IX while Ni2 and Mg2+ had no effect on protoheme synthesis. Activity with Fe2+ and mesoporphyrin IX was less than with protoporphyrin IX but deuteroporphyrin IX produced the highest rate of protoheme synthesis. The membrane fraction containing ferrochelatase activity was found to insert Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+ and Co2+ enzymatically into protoporphyrin IX to produce metalloporphyrins. Cu2+ incorporation into protoporphyrin IX proceeded at a rate greater than with Fe2+ and theK m for Cu2+ was 21.9 μM.

Notes: Summary A prospective survey of wound infection in a continuous series of 357 patients undergoing operations at a neurosurgical unit was made. The incidence of wound infection was 4.7 percent. Causative organisms were isolated in only 29.4 percent of the clinically infected cases. The type of suture material used did not affect the infection rate and neither did the coincidental use of steroids in the high doses employed in neurosurgical practice. Re-exploration does not carry an increased risk of infection. Use of systemic or topical antibiotics or both was not found to confer any protection against wound infection.
