Notes: Summary The elliptic Ritz projection with linear finite elements is shown to admit asymptotic error expansions on certain uniform meshes. This justifies the application of Richardson extrapolation for increasing the accuracy.

Notes: Summary Standard finite element schemes applied to boundary value problems on domains with reentrant corners suffer from a global loss of accuracy caused by the influence of the corner singularities. For a model situation, it is shown that this pollution effect can be completely described in terms of an asymptotic error expansion with respect to fractional powers of the mesh size parameter. This provides the basis of an extrapolation procedure which recovers the full order of accuracy for the solution as well as for the corresponding stress intensity factors.

Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to investigate whether the newly synthesized bisphosphonic acidlinked N-Lost derivative BAD retains bone-seeking and cytostatic properties. The paper describes experiments on mutagenicity in vitro and on toxicity in vivo. BAD is characterized by very low mutagenic activity toward histidine auxotrophic Salmonella typhimurium strains. Cytotoxic effects were tested in rat osteosarcoma and in Walker carcinosarcoma 256B. The LD50 of i.v. injected BAD was 146 mg/kg. Acute toxicity is probably caused by calcium complexing of the bisphosphonate part of the molecule. Labeling experiments showed moderate accumulation in bone and osteosarcoma, as well as in lung metastases. BAD effected high tumor growth inhibition in osteosarcoma and Walker carcinosarcoma-bearing rats and marked prolongation of survival; histologic and radiographic examination revealed rapid calcification of osteosarcoma and lung metastases. BAD-pretreatment produced protective effects against osteolysis induced by intratibially implanted Walker carcinosarcoma ascites cells. The cytostatic efficacy of equitoxic doses of BAD in rat osteosarcoma is comparable to that of dacarbazine and in Walker carcinosarcoma to that of melphalan.

Notes: Summary The clonality of tumor cells was studied in a patient with metastasizing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Using hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA as a genetic marker, the pattern of integration of viral DNA into the tumor cell genome was determined by Southern blot analyses of DNAs extracted from different HCC lesions in the liver and both lungs. All tumor tissues examined were found to have viral DNA integrated into the same site(s) of the cellular genome. This finding provides direct molecular evidence for a monoclonal origin and expansion of malignantly transformed hepatocytes during tumor growth and metastasis. This characteristic is similar to other human cancers associated with viral infections, such as adult T-cell leukemia, Burkitt's lymphoma, or cervical cancer, and is important für our understanding of viral oncogenesis in man.

Notes: Summary A prospective clinical study of 50 patients with acute pancreatitis was undertaken to estimate the significance of diagnostic data for assessment of the indication for and the timing of surgical intervention. Initial clinical and laboratory data did not facilitate the choice between conservative and operative treatment. Daily clinical assessment was the most helpful way to determine the indications for and the urgency of surgery. With the aid of the initial endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram, biliary pancreatitis could be accurately diagnosed and in cases of cholelithiasis, early surgery or endoscopic papillotomy could be performed.
