Notes: We have investigated a Josephson effect heterodyne mixer for the millimeter wave band employing high-Tc GdBaCuO point contacts. Mixer performance was in qualitative agreement with theory. A mixing response was observed up to 55 K, the highest operating temperature achieved for such a device to date. The voltage separation of rf-induced steps gave a value of h/2e=2.08×10−15 V s which is in excellent agreement with the value expected for Cooper pairs. In addition, the temperature dependence of the I0R product was found to agree with Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer theory in the weak coupling limit.

Notes: Abstract Nine psychotic patients under continuous oral treatment with haloperidol were randomly given a test dose of 1.5–5 mg haloperidol orally and/or intravenously. Serum levels of haloperidol were determined by high performance liquid chromatography and serum concentration data obtained were submitted to pharmacokinetic analysis. The steady state concentration ratio between blood and plasma was determined and found to be 0.79±0.03. The blood clearance was then calculated to be 550±133 ml/min. The mean hepatic extraction ratio was intermediate (0.37). Consequently, for a drug mainly eliminated by hepatic metabolism like haloperidol, the total blood clearance and the extent of oral bioavailability can be affected by changes in hepatic blood flow, hepatic enzyme activities and drug binding. During continuous oral treatment with haloperidol, however, it can be shown that changes in the total metabolic capacity of the liver due to hepatic enzyme induction or inhibition should be important for the therapeutic effects of haloperidol. The volume of distribution at steady state (Vdss) was large (7.9±2.5 l/kg). The terminal half-life was 18.8 h after intravenous and 18.1 h after oral administration. The oral bioavailability (0.60±0.18) were in accordance with previous results in healthy subjects. A mean lag time after oral dose was 1.3±1.1 h and a longer absorption half-life (1.9±1.4 h) was found in the patients compared with healthy volunteers.

Notes: Summary Ten patients (mean age 53 years; range 37–65 years) with hypertension refractory to standard triple treatment were selected for measurement of blood pressure and echocardiographic evaluation of the left ventricular dimensions before and after 3, 6 and 12 months of captopril therapy. In each patient the dose of captopril was titrated to a maximum of 150 mg t.d.s. (range 25 to 150 mg t.d.s.) with a therapeutic goal of ≤90 mmHg diastolic blood pressure. Most patients had added diuretic therapy. Four patients were unable to complete the study, two because of insufficient response to captopril therapy, and two because of side-effects (skin rash and cough). A significant fall in blood pressure was seen after three months of treatment and a reduced blood pressure was still maintained after 12 months. Over the same period, the average number of drugs was reduced from 3.6 to 2.1 per patient. A gradual reduction of septal and posterior wall thickness were noted, from 12.8 and 11.5 mm to 10.0 and 8.5 mm, respectively, after 12 months. Calculated left ventricular muscle mass was insignificantly reduced from 281 to 243 g after 12 months. The present study suggests that in hypertension resistant to conventional multiple therapy, captopril can reduce the blood pressure, and, in the long run it can also induce reversal of left ventricular wall thickening without causing deterioration of left ventricular function.

Notes: Abstract Acute pancreatitis is a serious surgical problem with a high incidence of mortality. Both ultrasound and X-ray CT have problems in identifying the extent and severity of the disease and the response to therapy. 67Ga-citrate has been used in 21 patients with clinically diagnosed acute pancreatitis:9 patients had X-ray CT and 15 had US examination. Gallium scans were more sensitive than X-ray CT and US in detecting the extent and severity of acute pancreatitis. In addition, gallium was helpful to monitor the response to therapy when the scan was repeated at various intervals in three patients. A subtraction technique using 99mTc-tin colloid and 67Ga-citrate was helpful to mask the liver uptake of gallium and clearly identify the extent of acute pancreatitis.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the superconducting transitions of Y1Ba2Cu3D x O7−x−δ samples where O has been replaced by D=F, S, or Cl andx=0.2-2. No single phase compounds were obtained forx〉0.2. No dramatic increase inT c was registered. Generally the results can be interpreted as a dilution of the highT c “1 2 3” phase by other phases as the dopant concentration increases, ultimately suppressingT c completely. Possibly there is an increase ofT c for an intermediate dopant range,x, in the Cl series.
