    Notes: Summary The symbiotic effectiveness of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi present in widely differring tropical soils was evaluated in a greenhouse experiment. Small volumes of field soil, a standard inoculum (Glomus aggregatum) or both were introduced into a fumigated sand-soil medium amended with nutrients for optimum VAM activity. Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit var. K8 was grown in the medium as an indicator plant. VAM effectiveness was monitored as a function of time by determining the P status of pinnules. The soils differed from each other with respect to the time their endophytes required for the expression of initial and maximum effectiveness and in the level of maximum effectiveness they exhibited. The effect of mycorrhizal inoculation, calculated as the ratio of the areas enclosed by the effectiveness curve of G. aggregatum to that enclosed by the effectiveness curves of test soils, was found to be a good indicator of the response of L. leucocephala to inoculation of soils with G. aggregatum

    Notes: The frequency and site of symptomless infection of flower buds, flowers, and fruits of red raspberry by Botrytis cinerea was studied using surface-disinfestation and culture techniques. Flower buds were rarely infected but open flowers were rapidly colonized and necrotic stamens and styles were an important source of infection for the developing fruit. The receptacle tissue within the drupelet cluster cavity was mostly sterile. Dichlofluanid sprays reduced symptomless infection of fruits and were more effective when applied early. Post-harvest rot tests indicated that incidence of grey mould was not related to symptomless infection unless fruits were surface-disinfested before subjecting to the rotting test.

    Notes: Summary Surface wind patterns and air flows within the planetary boundary layer over a large three-dimensional hill of moderate slope are grouped according to Froude number classes. An evolution of flow patterns is shown to occur as the Froude number increases. Separation of the surface flow begins at the base of the lee side of the mountain near the centerline, moving upward on the lee slope as the Froude number increases. Recirculating eddies follow the separation of the lee flow. Eventually the separation line moves forward to the windward side as the Froude number becomes very large. The recirculating eddy becomes unsteady, with indication of an intermittent counterrolating eddy near the lee surface in neutral flow. The lee-side turbulence is enhanced with respect to the windward side due to the large eddies in high Froude number regimes. The concept of a critical height for the approach flow is generally supported. The integral form of the Froude number does not appear to be superior to a bulk Froude calculation in representing a particular airflow pattern.

    Notes: Summary A phase I and pharmacokinetic study of tiazofurin (NSC 286193), a C-nucleoside that inhibits IMP dehydrogenase, has been completed. The drug was administered by continuous infusion over 5 days. The maximum tolerated dose was 1650 mg/m2 per day, neurological toxicity being the dose-limiting factor. Gastrointestinal and hematological toxicity were mild. A definite relationship exists between dosage and steady-state levels. The plasma clearance was 29.13 (±SD 4.05) ml/min per m2. No complete or partial remissions were demonstrated among the 18 patients treated at five dose levels between 550 mg/m2 and 2200 mg/m2 per day.

    Notes: Abstract Silicate materials, dicalcium orthosilicate (Ca2SiO4), calcium metasilicate (CaSiO3), and mini-granulated CaSiO3, were incorporated into three highly weathered, low-Si soils. The mixtures were moistened to field moisture-holding capacity and incubated in plastic bags for 60 days at approximately 25°C, after which Si was extracted. Application rates of silicate materials were 0, 460, 920, and 1380 mg Si per kg soil. Two ranges of particles sizes, 0.25 to 0.84 mm and 0.074 to 0.15 mm CaSiO3 and Ca2SiO4 were compared. The soils were a Typic Gibbsiorthox, pH 4.6; a Humoxic Tropohumult, pH 4.2; and a Typic Hydrandept, pH 5.0. Materials were evaluated by four extraction procedures: shaking in water, water displacement from saturated soil, shaking in ammonium acetate solution, and biologically by roots of sugarcane (Saccharum Spp. hybrid). Silicate from the CaSiO3 materials were generally more readily extracted chemically and biologically than silicate from the Ca2SiO4. Solubility and availability of Si usually increased as primary particle size of the silicate materials decreased. The exceptions were associated with the most acid (pH 4.2) Ultisol. Mini-granulation did not reduce the effectiveness of CaSiO3 thus confirming agronomic feasibility of mini-granulation. Plant uptake of Si was most closely related to water-extractable soil Si, followed by Si in saturation extracts and then by NH4 OAc-extractable Si.

    Notes: Abstract Genetic analysis of a polymorphic tissue esterase revealed a new locus (Est-6) with two alleles (Est-6 a andEst-6 b) on linkage group VI of the rabbit.Est-6 is closely linked to theEst-1,2,4 cluster. Esterase ofEst-6 is found in many organs, particularly in liver and small intestine, but not in erythrocytes and serum.Est-6 esterase hydrolyzes α-naphthyl acetate and butyrate, naphthol AS-D acetate, indoxyl acetate, and butyrate as well as 5-bromoindoxyl acetate,N-acetyl-l-alanine-α-naphthyl ester but not 4-methylumbelliferyl acetate and fluorescein diacetate. The enzyme is inhibited by bis-p-nitrophenyl phosphate and eserine but not byp-chloromercuribenzoate. It was classified as a carboxylesterase (EC 3.1.1.1). Based on chromosomal localization, tissue distribution, substrate specificity, inhibitor sensitivity, and range ofpI's, rabbitEst-6 is assumed to be homologous with mouseEs-7.

    Notes: In this work dispersive mixing and chemical reactions are treated simultaneously by resorting to the theory of stochastic processes. A fluidized-bed reactor is modeled by discretizing it into ideally stirred tanks of various sizes corresponding to bubble, cloud, and emulsion phases. All parameters in the model are correlated with known or experimentally obtainable quantities. Examples using a complex chemical reaction are given to demonstrate the applicability of the approach.
