Notes: Abstract On January 29ty, 1986, the third largest gas outburst in Japan took place at Sunagawa Coal Mine, which is the only hydraulic mine in Japan. It occurred at a face of a cross-cut, just after a coal seam was outcropped by blasting for drivage of the cross-cut. The site of the gas outburst was located 1,180 m below the surface. No workers were injured, but the cross-cut was plugged with 1,600 m3 of coal fragments extending over 100 m behind the face and 60,000 m3 of methane gas was emitted. The site of the gas outburst was investigated in detail to clarify the geological features. A normal and a reverse fault existed at the site. The area of the ejected zone was about 400 m2 and extended upward along the normal fault. The shape of the ejected zone suggests a great role of the normal fault on the gas outburst. Digital seismograms, recorded by a mine-wide seismic array at the coal mine, consisting of 27 microseismic events were used to investigate the gas outburst. Magnitude, seismic energy release, distribution of hypocenter and focal mechanism were analyzed. Taking the shape of the ejected zone together with results of the seismological investigation into consideration, it appears that the seismicity started with left-lateral faulting of the reverse fault and then right-lateral faulting of the normal fault followed. The faulting of the normal fault might be the direct cause and be the predominant mechanism of the gas outburst.

Notes: A 70-year-old male and a 46-year-old female, both living in Japan, were seen because of multiple erythematous papules and plaques on the trunk and extremities. The peripheral white blood cell counts were increased to 30000–80000/mm3. The majority of white cells had characteristic lobulated and deeply indented nuclei. The patients and most of their family members had anti-ATLV antibody. Using an OKT series of monoclonal antibodies the tumour cells were found to be T-cells. Trisomy 21 was detected in the first case and ATL virus proviral DNA in the second.

Notes: This paper describes the performance of a four-circle diffractometer installed at the Photon Factory for extensive use with synchrotron radiation for various investigations in the field of solid state physics. Its main part is based on a Huber 5020.4 type diffractometer with a crystal analyzer designed for vertical diffraction plane attitude. The diffractometer is mounted on a carriage table, which can precisely adjust the position of the diffractometer with respect to the incident beam monochromatized by successive reflection from a pair of Si(111) crystals. With a perfect crystal used as the analyzer the large size of the ω and 2θ circles enables us to make high resolution (ΔQ/Q∼10−4) measurements of x-ray scattering intensity distribution from a single crystal. The large space in the center of the diffractometer permits us to put a pressurizing cell or a cryostat on the φ table for scattering measurements at controlled pressures and temperatures. Selected examples of the application are presented.

Notes: Synchrotron radiation (SR) has been proved to be a powerful tool for x-ray study under pressure. So far, an energy dispersive method has been used because the intensity of the monochromatized beam is not strong enough for the very small sample under pressure, even if SR is used. In order to perform an angle-dispersive method under pressure, we need to use one- or two-dimensional detectors. Recently, a photostimulable fluorescence plate, named an imaging plate (IP), has been successfully used as an x-ray detector at the Photon Factory. We tried to combine a diamond anvil cell with SR and IP. Exposure time on IP for the diffraction from Ag in a diamond anvil cell at 22 keV is shorter than that on an x-ray film by a factor of 50. Resolution of IP (180 μm) is not a severe problem where IP is apart from the sample by 150 mm. Data on IP are digitally treated, so that it is easy to integrate the intensity along the Debye ring. Then, the reliability becomes more than 10 times better than a one-dimensional scan. Accuracy in determination of lattice constants and integrated intensity will be presented.

Notes: Films of (Yb,Tb,Bi)3Fe5O12 show excellent characteristics of the Faraday rotator at the wavelength of 1.3 μm; the rotation is −1800 deg/cm, insertion loss 0.3 dB, isolation 38 dB, and the temperature dependence of the Faraday rotation is 0.060 deg/K at room temperature. The films are grown epitaxially on the (Gd,Ca)3(Ga,Mg,Zr)5O12 substrates, from the melt in the flux PbO/B2O3/Bi2O3. The melt contains rare-earth ions (R=Y,Gd,Er,Dy,Tm,Yb,Lu) as c-site components of rare-earth iron garnets, and Fe and Ga+Al as a- and d-site components. The obtained film thickness is in the range 300–400 μm without appreciable defects on the substrate, with a 2-in. diameter. This technology will lead to the efficient production of the optical isolator used in optical systems.

Notes: Abstract The thermal resistance between liquid3He and copper potassium tutton salt (CPS) has been measured through its magnetic ordering temperature (T c=29.6 mK). The thermal resistanceR for pure3He has a broad minimum near 60 mK and increases continuously throughT cwith decreasing temperature, except for a dip atT c. BelowT c,R is proportional toT −1.5. Effects of4He coating have been studied by stepwise addition of4He into liquid3He. The thermal resistance increased drastically for the liquid containing 150 ppm4He and more for 95%4He. By sudden depressurization of the liquid3He containing 480 ppm4He, a considerable decrease ofR was observed. SinceR for pure3He was much smaller than the calculated Kapitza resistance, the present experimental results indicate the existence of surface magnetic coupling between liquid3He and CPS.

Notes: Summary The purpose of the present study was to analyse quantitatively the localization of calmodulin antagonist, n-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalene-sulfonamide (W-7) in CHO-Kl cells. The cultured CHO-Kl cells were labelled with 1 (16.7 μM), 2 (33.4 μM), 5 (83.5 μM) and 10 μCi/ml (167 μM) tritiated W-7. Some cells were preincubated in 10, 50 and 100 μM unlabelled W-7 for 30 min and then labelled with 2 or 5 μCi/ml tritiated W-7 for 1 h. The cells were doubly fixed in glutaraldehyde and osmium-tetroxide solution, and embedded in Epon. For light-microscopic radioautography, 2 μm-thick sections were wet mounted with radioautographic emulsion and exposed for 1 month. The radioautograms showed that large numbers of silver grains were mainly localized in the cytoplasm as well as in the nucleus. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that, in both the cytoplasm and nucleus, the number of silver grains was dependent on the concentration of the administered tritiated W-7 and the number was dramatically decreased by the pretreatment of unlabelled W-7. These results show that, in CHO-Kl cells, the W-7 binding sites are saturable. It is concluded that W-7 may get into CHO-Kl cells and be bound to a specific protein that may be calmodulin protein.

Notes: A micro high-performance liquid chromatographic (micro-HPLC) method was developed for the determination of purpurea glycoside A, purpurea glycoside B, and glucogitaloxin in Digitalis purpurea leaves. The extract of dry leaf powder was applied to a Sep-Pak silica cartridge followed by preparative thin-layer chromatography prior to micro-HPLC analysis. The analysis was performed on an ODS micro column, using acetonitrile-methanol-water (21:20:45) and ultraviolet detection (220 nm). The amounts of purpurea glycoside A, purpurea glycoside B, and glucogitaloxin per 100 mg of dry leaf powder were estimated to be 52.6, 50.7, and 108.6 μg, respectively.
